Our family of 4 (dh, me, sons ages 11 and 8), just returned from our first visit from Disney. We stayed 4 nights.

I was so afraid that after 2.5 months of research, this board, books, etc...that I was building Disney up in my mind and I would be disappointed!

WOW!....it actually exceeded my expectations. What a magical, happy place. My boys had such joy for 4 days straight, as did dh and I. I was even teary that first evening coming off some rides. I don't know what it was, I'm usually not like that.

Tip #1. The unofficial guide book WORKED! Although the crowds weren't horrible in the mornings, it really did keep us one step ahead..no waiting. We did 10 attractions and rides in 2.5 hours. The most we had to wait was 5 minutes at Splash Mountain. Plus, even if the crowds weren't that bad...it gives you a plan of where to go, because it can be overwhelming visually. It is worth the commando style for a few hours in the morning, then relax later.

Tip #2. GET UP EARLY! Get to the parks when they open or use EMH. AFter just 1-2 hours, the crowds start getting heavy. It is so worth it to do that. When we came back in the evening time, there were 60-90 minute waits. We decided to use that time for a few things with small waits, meander in stores, get an ice cream and just take it in.

Tip #3. Take that afternoon break. We thought our kids wouldn't want to, but they did. We took a 2-3 hour pool break every day. That was really relaxing and nice.

Tip #4. I got this tip on this board and it was WONDERFUL. Make an early morning PS at Crystal Palace (in MK). YOu get in the park before it opens. We had an 8:05 and we were finished at 8:35. Took pictures outside, then went to stand by the rope to get ready to go to splash mountain. They dropped the rope and we could see the people swarming down Main street. We were the 2nd family in line to SPlash Mountain!!!! Great tip. Plus, the breakfast was really good, the characters were darling and it just got us in a happy mood before starting the morning at MK.

Observations:

1. We ended up canceling half of our PS. It seems that when we got to the parks in the evening, we didn't want to give up our park time to sit in a restaurant, so we ended up eating Counter food.

2. We made a lunch PS at Biergarten at Epcot, which we kept. For some reason, I was thinking it would be outside, but it's inside and really dark. None of us were thrilled about that on such a beautiful day, nor did the kids think the food was great. I didn't like their desserts either. Next time, I'm making a PS at Rose and Crown which is located right on the lagoon. Very pretty location! Can't wait to try the fish and chips.

3. I didn't use half the stuff I brought. I didn't need moleskin, or water bottles. We walked ALOT, too. The weather was nice, so we never really felt dehydrated.

4. Mickey's Philharmagic in MK is not to be missed. It was my favorite attraction. I also LOVED Beauty and the Beast show at MGM and even got teary afterwards.

5. Disney does everything well! The parks are clean and even have clean smell.

Thank you Walt! You wanted to build a place that parents and children could have fun together and you succeeded. We connected with our kids and they to us and to each other. What is it about the magic?

We are going back next springbreak and I can't wait.

Thanks for sharing. I was trying to decide on a restaurant for our unplanned day at the MK; it looks like Crystal Palace is a good idea! Thanks1

The early PS at Crystal Palace only works on a NON-EMH day. Also, I said we went to Splash Mountain first...I meant Space Mountain.

The Crystal Palace character breakfast is one of the few best kept secrets, I think.

It's also amazing to me how many people don't use Fasspass. We would just zip right past hundreds of people!

Where did you stay? Was it really crowded? Glad you had such a great time - I'm jealous!

We stayed at the AKL. It really took me about the 3rd day to really appreciate the opulence and beauty of this hotel. When I first walked in I thought, "oh no, it's way to dark for my taste". However, in the evening, the place lit up in a nice beautiful glow and you could see all the immense attention to detail all thruout. It was so neat to walk outside early in the morning around the pool to the restaurant and hear low african music, really cool. The animals outide our balcony were nice, however the kids weren't as enthralled as I thought they would be. I think they would have enjoyed a pool view more, and I think if I stay again, I wouldn't splurge the extra $55/night for a savanah view. NIce for one time, but in hindsight, I don't think it was worth it.

What unnoficial guide book are you refering to? I bought one at Barnes & Noble but it doesn't seem to have much in it, thought maybe the one you bought might be more helpful :confused3

She's refering to The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2005 by Bob Sehlinger. Its great!

We were there April 1-7 and stayed at AK Lodge also! our kids loved the savannah view. I don't think I can stay anywhere else now! Did you notice that EVERYONE seemed to be sick with that horrible cough? I thought for sure we would get sick (DH is sick now that we are home). One night on the way home from one of the parks somebody was throwing up on the bus (twice)--it was probably the flu-I thought for sure we'd get that too. Other than that it was perfect weather and the crowds weren't that bad.

Oh, that ugly cough. My oldest came down with it the day before we left and now my youngest has it. Must have picked it up at WDW!

Wasn't the weather just perfect last week?

Great report! My sons ore 9 & 11 and we will be going to WDW for the first time in 25 days. I have 2 questions: Did you park hop? And did you go to the parks with EMHs or avoid them?

We park hopped every day (took an afternoon break usually from 1-4). Went to parks with EMH and yes they were a little busier but use FP and you're ok.

What a fabulous report, with great tips :flower: Thanks for posting :)

Yes, I park hopped. I found that sometimes we wanted to go to a different park that evening. I will definitely buy that option again. There was one day that we didn't hop, but I like having the option.

The only EMH we did was EPCOT and I do like it! The crowds is definitely thin for the first 2-3 hours. It is worth it. Like I said, if there isn't a EMH at MK when you are there, make the Crystal Palace PS for 8:05 and you'll be in the park already.

Our Crystal palace PS was a disaster!

We booked for 8.05 as recommended and allowed 45 minutes to travel (also as recommended). Took 7 o'clock bus from CSR and was there 7.15.

We were not allowed through the turnstiles until 8.15 (I think they were doing some filming for DHK as Mickey and Minnie pwere posing for film cameras) and when we got to CP there was a huge crowd of people all trying to give their names and waiting to be seated. :sunny: It was very hot with not enough shaded areas/seats to go round, and the kids were all getting fed up and cranky because they were starving. Finally seated around 8.40 at a table right by the kitchen door - and I mean one inch away! :earseek: Huge queues for all the food, and when we finally managed to get a piglet waffle for younger DS it was as hard as a roof tile and he couldn't eat it (he's 5 years old with a full set of teeth in case you wondered). The food was mediocre, and generally barely tepid, and only one server to about 10 tables as far as I could see meaning long waits for refills of juice etc. :bored:

The character interaction was good - we did get to see all of them (note Piglet just hangs around the buffet - you have to go and line up). But when they had the fun parade round the restaurant DH and elder DS were stuck in the middle of a food queue and missed it.

I was glad we had a voucher as part of our 10-day ticket as I would not have wanted to pay all that for such rubbish. My sister went to Breakfastosaurus the same day and said it was absolutely fantastic - I hadn't booked it due to poor reviews on here. Must say the character breakfast is the ONLY occasion these boards let us down the whole 2 weeks.

(We weren't impressed with Chef Mickey's either BTW)

That's too bad your experience at Crystal Palace was poor. It must have been an unusual reason why they didn't let you through the turnstiles, I bet that is not the norm. We were let thru at 7:45 and were at the restaurant right away, got seated at exactly 8:05 and finished at 8:35.

I guess it will vary person to person, but we all thought the food was delicious, especially the potato casserole. We didn't eat the waffles, so I can't attest to that.

I think the restaurant reviews are hit and miss. There are so many variables from wait times to crowds, to staff levels and moods, to character interaction and food quality... not to mention variables that are based on individual perceptions. On any given day... if you read enough dining review threads here, for every great review, there is an equally negative review. I, myself, experienced a great time at Breakfastasaurus one year and a negative one this past year, during/around the same time as you were there. OTOH, we enjoyed our Crystal Palace experience (albeit for dinner and in spite of the fact my 2yo had a potty accident during dinner! Eek!).

We too just got back (went from 3/20-3/27), I bought the Unofficial Guide and had everything planned pretty well. Had plenty of ps and cancelled a couple too!

We are already on planning to go back in November. It's such a magical place, my kids got on on wonderfully too (16,14,8 and 4)

Thanks for sharing

leaving for disney in, (count 'em) three days! Can't wait. I've been to Disney a few times before but never tried the Crystal Garden-great tip!

I loved reading your trip report...I want to go back sooo badly!! We just went this past Dec. for the first time-if I had the funds I think I'd be there a few times a year!! :Pinkbounc

Another great guide book is the PassPorter!! I used it and The Unofficial... together to make all of our plans! :flower:
