My husband and I just returned from a few days at HH. Every day was in the mid 80's except the last one. It was wonderful--we slept with the doors to the balcony open every night.

We went on the 2 hour kayaking trip offered by the resort, and a 2 1/2 hour walk on Pinckney Wildlife Refuge led by the resort's naturalist Brian. We'd never done either before and had a great time. The kayaking trip was easy going out, but the last 30 minutes my shoulders were aching!! The wildlife refuge is a great way to see lots of birds and critters. We saw several alligators, including a 6 ft mama gator. We also did the "Behind the Ears" resort tour, led by Gordon. He pointed out a lot of hidden Mickeys, and was very informative about the resort in general.

We ate at San Miguels, Giuseppe's, Old Oyster Factory, and Scott's Fish Market. The shrimp/scallop fettucine we had at Scott's was my favorite meal.

I did notice some bug bites (maybe chiggers--not sure) on my arms, so pack the bug spray. Also, if you have any breathing problems (I have asthma), the pollen seems to be really high right now.

I spent one afternoon shopping at the outlets. We live about 30 miles from the nearest shopping center at home, so I tend to do a ton of catalog shopping. It was nice to actually try things on before buying them, LOL!!

Finally, the slide was open on an intermittent basis at the resort pool.

If anyone has any questions I'd be glad to answer them. I notice some of y'all are coming done there soon.

Hint*** On the wildlife refuge trip, I noticed some of the parents were holding their kids the whole trip. There's a lot of walking involved, and if you have a sturdy stroller, you may want to consider bringing it to save some wear and tear on your arms.

Hi KirstenB, we where there from 16th to the 21st the weather was absolutely brilliant. We had A Private Affair booked with Chef Gordon at the beach house, what can i say out of this world i would highly recommend it. Glad to here you had as good a time as us.

jj........;)

JJ, I've always wanted to try Private Affair...glad you enjoyed it. Maybe next year we'll get off our wallets and try it;)

We did the Pinckney Island tour in the dead of the summer. Wow, some people turned back as they had kids and there was hardly any shade and ALOT of walking. It was almost 100 degrees that day. Not sure i'd even recommend the stroller, since the road is a little rough and the grass is high, lots of red ant hills. The kids aren't real patient to wait to see the birds and animals and sometimes you really have to look for them. Of course, nothing was coming out in that heat!
Sounds like you had fun. HH resort has alot to offer without ever leaving the grounds! We have the private affair booked for 4th of july week and can't wait.

Kirsten,

In the guidebook information about Hilton Head REsort, they mention a breakfast/lunch place called ``Tide Me Over'' that is supposed to be adjacent to the mercantile. Is that still there and was it open?

Laura

Laura,
It is, and they have a better-than-average selection of fast food. We didn't eat there (our little girl stayed with my parents, so we got a break from our usual fast food mandate, LOL!!), but this is probably the last vacation we'll take without her (I missed her so much).

So, even though we didn't eat there, I was looking over the selection for our next trip with her. They had hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken strips, a turkey wrap, caesar salad, grilled chicken sandwich, fries, brownies. The prices were in the $3-$7 range, and they were open from 9-4.

We were at HH the week prior to Labor Day.

Let me preface this by saying that I LOVE warm/hot weather. LOVE IT!!! But I am not silly. My wife was considering that trip and I talked her out of it. We had 3 boys (8, 7 & 3) with us and the thought of them wilting in the heat was too real for my taste.

We saw Eric, the naturalist, later, who confirmed that a good time was NOT had by all.

I do plan to do it when we return for NYE this year, though. I hear that it is a great experience.

:smooth:

How much did the walking tour and kayaking cost? Also has anyone done the walking w/breakfast or trolley tour in Savannah? Any info would be appreciated.

The kayaking was $35/person. The walking tours were free.
