Appreciate all the advice I got before my trip and would like to pay it forward. This isn’t’ a trip report per se, but just some feedback on our experience. For context DH and I are in our mid-40s and have two kids 7 and 9. We’re healthy and active, so walking was never an issue. We were there March 5th through 12th.

Cabana Bay – loved the hotel and had no issues. We had a family suite in the Thunderbird (unfortunately, our view was facing the parking lot.). When i booked (through universal) I made sure to request a higher level room, but that never made it on to my reservation. We checked in to find out we were assigned a ground level, but they graciously reassigned us. Not a big deal, but if the hotel were full, it might have been an issue. If you have any special requests, you may want to call the hotel ahead of time. The room was plenty spacious. The microwave did not seem “brand new” for a new hotel. We had to lift and slam the door to close it. The fridge was plenty cold and we had no problem storing milk and keeping it ice cold. WARNING that this property is HUGE and if walking is an issue for you, want to pick a room close to the lobby. There is no fan in the toilet room, so if that is an issue for your family, you may want to bring some air freshener.

Shipments to hotel – I shipped about 4 packages to the hotel. All arrived in time. There were 3 waiting for me when I arrived, and the last arrived before we left. There was not charge or hassle to pick up.

Cabana Bay Food – food options are not the greatest. The Bayliner diner was okay at best, although we really liked the Pizza. Ate one night at the Bowling Alley. Service was slow and food quality was just okay. Warning that the Bayliner Diner IS open for breakfast, but the signs for this are only out in the morning. Any other time of day and it says open for lunch and dinner. It was our last day before we realized we could have had breakfast there.

Ride Waits – this was the one downside of the Cabana Bay stay. I think it would have been nice to have the Express Passes through one of the premium hotels. We rode despicable me on day 1 with a 20 min wait, after that it was usually 45 minutes plus. It was VERY frustrating, waiting in line and then watching the express passers get ahead of you L

Crowds and Shuttles – We unknowingly booked during the NDA highschool finals. There were crowds of teenage girls EVERYWHERE. After the first shuttle ride, my son looked at me, exasperated, and asked “don’t teenage girls every stop talking?” lol. Shuttles would easily fill up with one or two dance teams. Lineups in the park and Starbucks were exceptionally long this time of year due to the dance teams. Many times, the shuttles were packed and standing room only. Unless you are tall and strong, don’t bother, there is always another bus around the corner. On the second or third morning, I was being flung all over the bus, fell into someone’s lap and then fell forward into someone else. After that, if we got to the front of the line and the bus was full, we just let those wanting to stand get ahead of us, and we waited it out for the next bus which was never more than a few minutes away.

US/IoA Food – Our best meal (and most expensive) was probably at Emerils. We really enjoyed Vivo and ate there twice. Hardrock was consistent with other locations. Confisco Grille and Mythos were also good as was Finnegan’s Pub. The worst meal we had was at Richters – the burgers were awful!

Photoconnect – We paid for the 14 day pass. We got pictures taken on the way in and on the way out. But we were tired of posing by the end of the trip. We ended up with 48 pictures overall, not quite sure it was worth it. I think though that a few of our pictures went MIA and we ended up with pictures from a few strangers in our package. This wasn’t explained to me, but we realized on the last day that our package came with two printouts – I think it was one 5x7 and one 4x6. But you have to ask for it at the time (ex. for ride photos). Some of our phots (like the mummy) we could not even be seen in the photo due to front rows raising their hands. This was disappointing as the Mummy photo is really cool and I could not convince my son to ride it a second time. Some attendants were really good and would ask how many people were in your party, so if only 3 of us rode Forbidden Journey, though would crop the fourth person out of the picture. Be sure to pose for at least one photo at Gringott’s.

AMEX Discount – I got the AMEX discount whenever I asked. I was the one who was worried about currency exchange, and wondered about AMEX traveller’s cheques. YES, it works! We only used the USD travellers cheques (not the actual card) and saved our 10 to 15%. I think this worked out to about $150 in savings for the week! Some places just figured out how to do it – others just gave us the AAA discount. On the first day we bought two interactive wands at Ollivanders and got the 15%. For all other souvenirs, we the merchandise gets repeated through many stores. Both the front stores at US and IoA, have just about EVERYTHING you see elsewhere in the parks. This allowed us to save 15% on all our souvenirs rather than buying them piecemeal.

Mardi Gras Parade – this was AWESOME. Really well done and we had so much fun catching necklaces. If you have the chance to do during this time, don’t miss the parade. Our free concert was Trace Adkins, but we’re not country music fans, so we didn’t bother.

Duration of Stay - We stayed for 7 days, and had 7 day tickets which is honestly quite excessive for US and IofA. To be honest if were not for the HP areas, the park would be flailing. There are a handful of rides that are worth the wait, but some things like Twister and Disaster have been there just far too long (I remember visiting there as a kid). 25 years ago, I remember being wowed by Disaster, but for today's kids, it is just not that impressive. We NEVER got our act together early enough to take advance of EE. On those days that we did, the shuttle line at Cabana Bay was ridiculous and we ended up waiting half an hour or more, making it to the park with just minutes left for EE. Most days, we be at the park from 9 to lunch. Eat lunch at the park, and then had back to cabana bay for pool time. Sometimes, the kids and I would head back for an hour or two, and then meet up with DH at City Walk for dinner. Often after dinner, the kids and I would head to the parks for a ride or two, and DH would head back to the hotel. A 3/4 day stay is more then enough, unless you just want a relaxing holiday like we had.

Walking – the walk from the Thunderbird to the shuttle added to it, but with my FITBIT, I was able to log, on average, at least 25,000 steps a day!

Any questions?

Thanks for the report!

Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your Counter Service meals Richters or the Bayliner Diner, but it sounds like the TS restaurants are pretty good. Were there any CS restaurants that you guys did like? It sounds like most of the counter service restaurants serve burgers and other standard fare, which is fine with us, but unfortunately most of them sound pretty bad. If you had any good experiences I'd love to hear them!

Thanks for the report - that was very helpful. i'm really debating the photoconnect. I think we will get it - but not sure between the 1 day and the 3 day. Given that there are so few pic opportunities, perhaps 1 day will suffice (out of our 3 day trip).

Not all kids. My son really liked it and keeps wanting to experience it again.

Weird about Richter's! Their veggie burgers, at least, are very tasty.

Yes, strange about Richters; we really enjoyed their food on our last visit. And both boys still remember it, so I'm sure we'll eat there in June.

We were there at the same time. We were amazed at all the dance teams. They were also staying at RPR. Thanks for your take on CB.

We are now on our 6th trip (Me, hubby and DS (8) and we stay longer each time. This is the second time we don't have to plan Disney in and I am loving life. We normally have 2 days for SeaWorld and 4-5 days at Unverisal. We are staying at the Cabana Bay for the first part to do the SeaWorld part and then the Hard Rock for the Unverisal part. I will say that in the express pass defense I am paying a AP rate of $110 a night for the Cabana Bay and $250 a night for the Hard Rock and the express pass that comes with it. This would be why they don't offer it at the CB hotel. I would not go without my express pass but if they made it like Disney and the Fastpass or gave it to all hotels onsite then it would be overcrowded and just like the one reason we stopped going to Disney (the Fastpass is no longer a Fastpass). I do hope that Unverisal keeps the Express Pass the way it is to avoid overcrowding. If it is worth it I would say pay the extra and stay onsite at one of the three hotels that offer it(even one night gives you 2 full days of the pass).

For Photo Connect : One thing I didn't know is if you have a AP you can use it for one full year. We will be able to use it for the 4th time before it runs out so huge plus for us. Also, we go to the counter and have the counter person crop the photo right there for us.

Isn't the AP Photo Connect a little bit more expensive though? I saw $39.95 for 1 day, $59.95 for 3 day, and $89.95 for 1 year.

Thanks for the report!

hmmm. I'm trying to think what we ate. I think on day 1 we had bayliner, day 2 cofiscos (TS), and day 3 was Richters, after which DH said NO MORE CS!. Honestly, for most of the CS are quite pricy and almost as much as the TS. In many cases, you can get TS meals for less than what you'd pay for CS. For example, one day I looked at Thunder falls (?) in Jursassic park. It had good reviews here, but I found it expensive. The only difference for me is the gratuity you have to pay for TS, but the increase in the quality of food made it worthwhile. There was some TS we didn't LOVE, but it was edible and worth the money we paid.

I actually was pretty impressed with the number of photo ops. All day long there are photo opps at the park entrances. We also found photographers around despicable me and around the Simpsons area. There are photographers at the end of the despicable me ride; plus you get pictures on FJ, Hulk, Mummy, Gringots, Spiderman, Transformers. I'm sure all the character meets have photographers too, we just never made it to any.

Surprised by how many of you liked Richters. I like a good burger (real beef, hand pressed etc.) but I'm also fine with McD or BK or Wendys. The richter patties just seemed like pressed sawdust to us.

I had read many mixed reviews on Mels - some loved it some hated it. I wanted to try it but we never made it there.

Glad to hear your trip for the most part was a pleasant one. I stayed at Cabana Bay in January and several of your assessment would somewhat parallel mine.

On the resort itself, I agree it's large, My room was on the far opposite side of the resort from yours in Americana. I had a room and not a suite so I didn't have a microwave. Quality wise, I didn't have any major problem with Bay Liner Diner. My biggest complaint was the lack of "non theme park" fare. Wanting a "real meal" limited you to only a few choices.

I was traveling solo so I was able to use the single rider line to avoid many of the worst lines. One of the biggest down sides to EE being at IOA over US like is was when I was there in January is not being able to do Early Entry on Despicable Me. For Cabana Bay Guests, that is probably just as valuable as early entry to WWOHP.

From Thunderbird, did you consider taking the garden walk in the mornings to the park. Yes I know it would have been extra steps on your fitbit but by the time you walk to the bus stop and then from the bus stop to IOA not much. And it may have been a little bit quicker. I walked back to Cabana Bay a couple of evening. It's not a short walk but it is pleasant.

I was there during taping of La Voz Kids. So, there were kids in the resort everywhere. But I will say they were very well behaved.

I won't argue that HP saved Universal but the fact that DHS is a cheap add on after visiting the MK and EPCOT is all that is currently saving it. According to Touring Plans USF has 13 "rides" (could be as low as 11 with the rest shows depending on how you count), 5 walk through attractions, 9 shows and 1 parade. DHS has 5 "rides", 4 "walk through attractions", 11 shows and no parade. I would much rather have 13 rides with a couple of them being clunkers and most of them having short waits instead of having 5 rides most of which instantly have a long wait if you don't have a FP.

In your reply, you stumbled on one of Universals "little secrets". The expensive end of CS and the cheap end of TS are not that far apart. The difference in prices between Leaky Cauldron and Finnegan for similar menu items is often under $1.

Yep, didn't want to leave the impression that it wasn't a good trip, it was an amazing trip, and we had lots of fun. Like I said, I didn't intend this as trip report, it was more to pass on some lessons learned in case it helped anyone else.

I was not aware of the garden path. I assumed we walked along the traffic roads. I was all for grabbing more steps (first time ever, I topped the leaderboard amongst my friends!), but the shuttle serves it's purpose too, especially for the kids.

The bayliner diner did have on thing that looked great, it was a chicken artichoke penne with a pesto sauce. It looked SOOOO good. But the portion was huge, and I knew DH and the kids would not want to share it, so I never tried it.

Last time we did Disney, the kids were 2 and 3. It would be a totally different experience now, and with them having "outgrown" most of the characters, I'm not sure how much they would enjoy it. I think 1 day at DHS might meet our needs. Perhaps as an add-on to a future cruise out of PC.

Oh, one more thing I thought to add ...

As johde mentions, you can't get a real "meal" at Cabana Bay, there are no sit down restaruants, just the Bayliner Diner and the Bowling Alley.

I knew of the restaurants at the premium resorts. But I assumed we had to take the shuttle to Citywalk, and then either get the water taxi or the shuttle bus to the other resort. I learned on the last night that Cabana Bay has a shuttle that takes you direct to the other resorts if you have a dinner reservation. Had I known about this earlier, I would have taken advantage of it.

Thanks for the report, altho can't say I agree with your Twister comment. I hope they never get rid of Twister, just love that ride. It's different, unique, sometimes you just don't want to do a roller coaster and it just feels like Universal. And everybody can enjoy it. Same thing with ET, even at my age it never gets old for me. hehe

yes, that shuttle service when you have a reservation at one of the deluxe hotels, has been around once Cbay opened.

Your post has been VERY helpful!

We have been tossing up the week you just stayed (approx.) or the week before. Feb 24- March 2nd ish next year.

And also was contemplating Cabana Bay or Hard Rock again. We're were thinking Cabana just because it's newer. Now I'm wondering about no EP!

Did you ever attempt to walk from Cabana to the parks?

25,000 steps on your fitbit ...AWESOME!

We are now on our 6th trip (Me, hubby and DS (8) and we stay longer each time. This is the second time we don't have to plan Disney in and I am loving life. Have you checked out Springhill Suites Sea World? It's a SW partner hotel and it comes with the extra perks. We loved the VIP seating for the shows & the front of the line access for some of the rides. The hotel was awesome!!! If we weren't staying onsite at Universal exclusively for the EP we would be staying at Spring hill. There's 2 Springhill suites you need to specify the Sea world one if you are checking it out!

Oh, one more thing I thought to add ...

As johde mentions, you can't get a real "meal" at Cabana Bay, there are no sit down restaruants, just the Bayliner Diner and the Bowling Alley.
There are a few "meal" options. I had the beef stew and the Tuna noodle Casserole. They were both good but especially Tuna Noodle Casserole you need to be in the right mood for it.

Did you ever attempt to walk from Cabana to the parks?

25,000 steps on your fitbit ...AWESOME!

I took the garden walk back to the room a couple of time at park closing. I will say it way VERY quiet once you get past Royal Pacific. Here's a video touringplans did of the garden walk. Right now, you cross 1 road. Looking at the plans for Sapphire Falls, once it gets done and the boats get extended, it looks like the garden path will get rerouted under that road.
