BRP from last week, that is.

A kind soul checked BRP for deluxe AKL concierge a few days back for 3/3 - 3/5, and it came in at $470. Just a few minutes ago, I booked that room with a AAA rate for $461. Not the best price I've seen for peak concierge, but not bad either. Plus it's our ten year anniversary. :cool1:

Now I have to book that sunset safari. :flower:

I would venture to guess that it's for one night. :scratchin

I just priced AKL Savannah view and it came up at $297 with AAA discount, for one night. Concierge is easily that much more :)

You will find with the higher priced rooms it usually works out to more of a discount taking the AAA discount than BRP. It did last summer at Polynesian LVC for us.

We stayed at AKL concierge for our anniversary in 2003. Loved the lodge & service. HOWEVER - the concierge level is on the 6th floor which is directly above the lobby and DOES NOT EXTEND the length of the hotel. Not bad, but virtually NO VIEW from any of the rooms there (and there are NOT many rooms. Apparently, adding concierge service to this hotel was almost an after-thought, so they had to work with the space they had.

They were kind enough to let us see the view from several rooms when we were checking in, but none appealed to me as I was firm about wanting a savanah view

The concierge suggested (apparently this is a COMMON COMPLAINT) we take a room on the 5th floor (MANY MORE to choose from) and simply use our key to access the elevator to the 6th. Worked well for us.

We did find the food selection, though good - not great, at least during our stay - and seating very limited compared to other concierge hotels. If it had not been for the safari, we would not have paid the extra price for concierge.

On that note, might I suggest, now that you are booked concierge, you call the AKL and TALK to one of their concierge specialist. What we did not realize when we booked was that you only have to be concierge the night before the safari.

Had we made a simple request during our visit we could have saved $$$ as our stay was 3 nights. How? Take a 5th floor room (also quieter & more romantic in my opinion) for BOTH nights, but pay concierge ONLY for the night BEFORE the safari. I think they will work with you on this - at least it's worth a try. You'll have a room with a view but pay less for the second night. Plus, the 5th floor is not exclusive to concierge, so you can stay in the same room - not having to move off the concierge floor.

Oh, one more thing. We bumped in to - LITERALLY - John Travolta one evening on our stay. He was attending a party in the Presidential Suite (corner of 5th floor) and was in the hallway as we passed by. He had his back to us talking to a couple of fellows and, as we approached to pass the group, he turned, took two steps forward and ran right into my hubby! After a quick apology, he actually introduced himself (really!) and asked where we were from, how long we were staying, did we like the lodge, etc. So, there you go! Pixie Dust on the 5th floor of AKL!

I promise you will enjoy the stay, the food, the staff, the gift shop - EVERYTHING. Be sure to go out into the main savanah area one evening after dark to view the animals through night-vision goggles - way cool. Also, try to catch one of the flamingo feedings.

Boy, I am ready for another trip to AKL now. Have a great time! :bounce:

I did request 5th floor Zebra trail, as I'd read about the 6th floor.

I don't mind too much about two night's concierge, as it is a special anniversary, and we'll have spent the five days previous at VWL with lots of room, but no special pampering (we're renting DVC points.)

Did you have a difficult time getting reservations for the sunset safari? I've called and emailed the AKL concierge desk, and have yet to hear back (okay, it's been less than 24 hours - can you tell I'm anxious?)

BRP didn't exist last summer. I assume you mean the AP rate you were offered for that time didn't beat the AAA discount (?)

I am pretty happy with my BRP rate for March for Poly LVC, and I think it is more than the AAA discounts would be for that room at that time. (so I think this may vary, and would be good to check) Isn't AAA pretty much a straight 10% off rack rate? My BRP is discounted WAY more than that.

The rack rate for concierge at AKL at that time (peak) is $618.83 (incl. tax). Thus, our AAA savings of $157/night is a little over 25% off. While I've had 40% off during value season before, I'll take the 25%, and just keep my fingers crossed that something cheaper might add a bit of extra pixie dust.

Exactly. I've just gotten used to calling it BRP now. AAA discount was 15% in value season. I would love to know what rate you received for March. We may have to move up our plans to May.TIA

When we went they only had the SUNRISE Safari which was terrific as the animals were just waking up and being fed.

As for the pampering, we didn't experience too much of that during our stay. There was always someone at the concierge desk to answer questions, etc. And we did receive a nice 'welcome' bag with some bottled water, but I think that was related to the safari. We also got an 'anniversary' cake delivered to our room while we were at the park - nice touch. But, overall, there really wasn't that 'pampered' feeling I expected.

HOWEVER, we received great response to concierge phone calls prior to our trip and got lots of pre-planning assistance. I do a lot of research and reserving before trips (yes, I am a fuss-budget kind of person :rotfl: ) so I didn't need much, but they answered all my questions & then some.

We stayed at VWL in a top floor studio last Feb and really enjoyed the peace and quiet - though it did rain - a lot - during our stay. We had a lagoon view and I loved waking up to see the ferry going across to FW & then to MK. Actually, the MK ferry was quite convenient and we actually went there more than usual because of this access. WARNING: If you are driving into VWL, getting there can be confusing as you have to drive through the MK parking entrance then turn right. And coming out sometimes takes you into a LOT of MK parking traffic. Just a caution.

I love both lodges. If I were to choose one again, it would probably be AKL because of the beauty and unique feel. Where else can you pretend you are in Africa? The room and hall lighting are dim, but it really does add to the ambiance.

As for the concierge desk, be persistent in your calls. They have several persons working that desk and someone certainly SHOULD return your call. After all, that is why you are paying the extra $$$!

Enjoy your special stay and happy anniversary! Be sure to get an 'It's our Anniversary' pin from Guest Services in each park and DTD. It is fun to get all the 'congratulations' and occassional extra perks when wearing a pin! :rolleyes1
