Just dessert at Blue Bayou?

I haven't been to DL since I was 7 and my boyfriend has never been to DL or WDW. I think the BB looks like a nice place to eat, but I really do not want to pay $35 an entree. I live in Philly and go to great restaurants here all the time and do not pay that much. Is it possible to just go for a couple of desserts and coffee? Since DL seems to have much better CS places than WDW, I just cannot justify the costs of eating here...even for lunch. Thanks.

Last Dec. we were a party of 5, 3 adults 2 children ~ we ordered 2 desserts and drank water.

Sure, but you'd still want to do a PS to make sure you have a spot. You can also share plates at BB, the portions are very large and there is definitely enough for 2 to share. They do charge $5 for split plates but you also get double the sides and you each get a soup or salad. DBF and I like to share the MC, I get salad, he gets soup and we share that, then we get the sandwich already split with the sides, then we have not enough room for dessert but we eat it anyway. LOL Get the cookie boat, it's sooooo worth it!

Good idea! I forgot about the split plate information I read before. Plus $5 is a bargain because I will fill up on the salad and sides anyway. I think I'll shoot for dinner one night, I used Discover cashback for giftcards to chain restaurants near our hotel, the Hyatt. But it'd be nice to eat dinner in the park once. I am sure we won't be back to DL for a long time. Transcontinental flights are too much money anymore.

That's how we did BB on our last trip. The girls split a cookie boat and I got the creme brulee trio. There was one I didn't think was as good as the others but it was all still good.

The girls highly recommend the cookie boat.

FYI my wife and I were just there 2/24/2009 and we only got ONE salad. I asked about if we would both get salads if we did the split plate charge and they said no. We had the mahi mahi and I was NOT impressed. $70 dinner with crab cakes (were not good either) split plate of mahi mahi and the flying duchman.

Maybe it was just an off night but my portion of mahi mahi was about the size of a silver dollar and I got one shrimp on a HUGE amount of cooked spinach.

I will NOT be back unless is for just dessert. The flying duchman dessert was great. Maybe I am spoiled with good seafood here in the PNW.

I had heard this recently that the split plate no longer included a side for each, but rather a split side. Too bad.

Hmm, but we've had reports from others saying they did get soup & salad.....something to ask about. I do think you should get 2 starters, especially since they do the split plate charge.

We did dessert only at BB last year in October. Even with the PS, it was a 45-minute wait to be seated (it was a Saturday night, so that may explain it). It basically comes down to the Flying Dutchman cookie boat (too much dessert for one person; perfect for two people), the Tortuga Trio (three different creme brulees) and the Key Lime Pie for dessert. I don't think it's shown on the menu but they also have chocolate mousse cake. In any case, I wouldn't say that they are exactly thrilled at the BB when folks want to order dessert only, but I think they are realizing that more and more folks are doing that these days because the regular food is so pricey, so they smile and take the order and deal with it. There was a rumor not long ago that BB was going to stop accepting dessert-only PS's, and I am not sure how accurate that rumor was/is, but someone suggested just making the PS and then not telling anyone that you only want dessert until you are actually sititng at the table!

I didnt know you could just order dessert... I thought you had to order a meal before you could get a dessert. Is there a split plate charge? I am not a big fan of the BB meals but their desserts were very good.

I believe the split plate charge is $5.

From what I've heard, just don't tell them in advance you're only getting dessert. I am pretty sure most of the waiters are reasonable enough to let you have just dessert if you "pretend" to make that decision right then and there.

So, anyone go recently (like mariners 1999 did) and do the split plate $5 and only get your sides SPLIT...(not one full side/choice for each person?)
That would STINK, if so!

What the heck are you getting for that $5 split plate charge then?? They're charging you $5 to put half of your meal on one plate and half on another?
If that's true, then forget that...We'll just put the plate between us and both eat off of the same plate! (but maybe then they'll charge for the use of 2 forks?!?)

She said that there are some servers who are weird about it, but if that happens, ask a manager. That there's no minimum price to buy, and if you just want dessert, get dessert (which was funny b/c we went there just to get dessert, but then DS's was going to be free b/c it was his birthday and they offered it, and we felt weird sitting there having ONE paid for dessert, NO drinks, and that was it (b/c DS won't touch their food at all)...so we ordered a lunch and then were too full for dessert).

And if you're only given one salad, to complain as well, b/c it's not supposed to be that way. According to our nice server last May.

We went for dinner a year ago, and for lunch last October. Lunch was a lot better. I had the mahi mahi, and like the PP, was not impressed. It was dry and overcooked, and served on a bed of dry uncooked spinach. Bleah! Service was slow and we were seated in the middle of the restaurant, and it was very noisy.

So in October I took the advice of some nice people here on the boards, and made PS's for the first lunch seating at 11:30. You make your PS and request waterside seating. Then you show up at the podium at 11:15 and pleasantly repeat your request for waterside seating. Odds are, you'll be seated right at 11:30 and in a beautiful spot on the water. Service is fast at least to start with, because your server hasn't had time to get slammed yet! If you ask for waterside at dinner, even with PS's, you could end up waiting far longer than your PS time to get it.

We had the buccaneer short ribs and they were AWESOME. I had the Tesoro chicken and it was good. Plus the cookie boat to share, yum! The gumbo is also delicious. For pictures, check my trip report, linked in my siggy below-- I think it's on page 6, we ate at BB on our last day.

Right, I don't think it's like they make one entree, then literally split it in half and throw it on two plates. I'm sure they take care to understand there should be enough for 2 people, and as Molly says, they'll throw in enough sides.
