Just curious - does your child cry when waking up in the AM?

My 3 YO more often than not wakes up in the morning crying after a full night of sleep. I don't know if it's just that he doesn't like the feeling of waking up or if it's just habit that he cries. I guess I never really thought it was unusual because no one really likes that half-asleep feeling you get when getting out of bed in the morning. I was kind of hoping at his age (3 yrs 4 ms) he'd have outgrown it.

He will naturally wake up anytime between 6:30 - 7:30 and even if i'm not waking him up he'll cry for a good 2 minutes and then he's done.

Anyone else go through this and when does it stop? My 7 YO didn't do this much after his 2nd birthday if at all.

Thanks! :)

One question - does he get out of bed by himself or wait for you to come in? My DD2 1/2 won't get out of her bed until she sees me or her sister, so she will cry until someone goes in. But weekdays when I am up before her, she sees the kitchen light on or sees me walk by her door, and just comes right out for her snuggle. I think if it doesn't affect the rest of his morning, it's probably just his way to wake up

mine 2 & 3 usually wake up in the best mood they are likly to have all day!

but if a child does not like being "wet" (I'm assuming he does not stay dry all night) I could see thim crying till you get them changed

During the week, I think he wakes up when he hears us getting ready for work. Usually he just lays quietly til we go in to get him. Some times he sings (ABC and Happy Birthday are his current tunes of choice) or he talks and plays with whatever "guys" he has in bed with him.

On weekends he usually wakes up before us. He will chatter and sing for awhile, but when he gets tired of that he starts calling for us. He almost never cries though. Usually he calls, I want to get up now or I have to go potty. He is completely day trained and usually makes it through the night dry.

Now that we moved him to a different bedroom that is much darker in the morning, he sleeps in much longer :thumbsup2 And I agree, usually first thing in the morning is the best mood he is in all day!

My oldest son (now 13) used to do this alot...My youngest (almost 4) also does it...
I attribute it to just not being "morning" people...I HATE mornings and would cry if I could...but I doubt many 40 yr olds do that right?? :rotfl2:
In any event...I usually just try to "ignore" it and realize that they will eventually perk up and be ok.
And eventually they stop....though my 13yr old needs a stick of dynamite to get his butt up in the morning..and I just don't talk to him for about 10 minutes or so cause I don't want to deal with it

Cheap Traveler - well, about half of the time he wakes up on his own, and then the other half I have to wake him to get going to the babysitter 3x a week. He will wake up and walk around on his own on those mornings I don't wake him, but he's just more often than not really grumpy and cries when he wakes.

It's just weird, he's done it for so long that it doesn't even seem unusual to me anymore, but i'd have thought he'd outgrow it by now since it does bother me to hear him cry. Once he gets it out of his system he's fine and ready to go and play or eat breakfast.

Woodpackmom - LOL at the stick of dynamite comment. I guess some people are just naturally morning people and some you just get out of the way :rotfl:

I know that I felt like crying this morning!!:rotfl2:

Both of mine did this until the figured out that it was okay to get out of bed on their own. They would sit there and cry until someone saved them from their bed. I guess I'm just mean, because sometimes I would make them wait a while, dd would get bored of crying and make a loud "fake" crying sound every few minutes..it was funny. Now dh6 will always come and find me first when he wakes up. DD9 will just go and sit on the couch until someone else wakes up.

DD used to do this every day. She will not get out of bed on her own in the morning, even though we have told her it is OK and even though she does get up at night to use the toilet.

One day it occured to me that perhaps she didn't know what else to do when she woke up. So, I told her exactly what to say: "Mommy, Daddy, I'm awake!" She did it the very next day and still does that most days. Every once in a while she still cries instead.

This is going to sound hokey but I read that when kids' blood sugar drops it can cause them to act cranky. Not that they are diabetic, just that they need something to eat. After a long nights sleep their body needs to replenish. Sometimes my younger children wake up and they cry and I give them a quick snack (healthy) and it stops. I mentioned this to a friend who was having the same problem and she also gave her child food right away or even a glass of OJ and the crying stopped instantly. Maybe give it a try and see if it works. Good luck!:cutie:

My oldest son (now 5) used to do this sometimes. I don't think it was all the time, but he does have a hard time waking up in the morning. I'm sure he'll outgrow it, especially as he becomes more and more verbal.
