This weekend was dd's birthday and we had a big family party on Saturday. DD is 15 and really just wanted the cash this year. I figured everyone has to go through this at least once before realizing that it's more fun to open gifts than envelopes.
Most of the family was relieved because, well, who wants to try to buy a gift for a teenager? She got a few gifts that were big hits (Twister pajamas from her auntie, for example) but mostly money.
At the end of the party, my sister asked dd how much money she got. DD came right out with the answer but my nephew-in-law was shocked and appalled and told her, "You don't have to answer that, you know." We all laughed at him and said, "Why WOULDN"T she answer it?" He thinks it's rude to talk about money. I told him that he ought to know by now that if any of us are asked a question (and it doesn't matter what it is) that we'll either come out and tell you or tell you that it's none of your business.
There aren't a whole lot of taboo subjects within my family--we'll pretty much tell you anything you want to know. For those that are dying of curiosity
dd raked in around $300 from me, her dad, various grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. We've got a lot of family. She went on a big mall shopping spree and had a blast.
Would you refrain from asking a family member about money or any other subjects? We decided that we're all just too nosey but we're used to each other so it doesn't matter.

(if you get my drift), but have no idea how much money they earn in a year.
