Hi guys!

Just back from WDW! We ate at:

Grand Floridian Cafe (breakfast)
Food quality good as usual. I do miss the pastry basket that used to be served with every breakfast dish. Now, it is a la carte. It's been gone a while now but I still miss having it. I just can't see paying $8 bucks for it now ;) The service this time around was so-so. I've noticed some turnaround with the wait staff. We used to see the same servers each stay which was quite nice. This time, many of the CM's seemed new. A couple of our orders came out wrong and we were charged incorrectly, too. My mother is a small eater and asked for a small omelet (rather than the HUGE one they usually serve and without the hash brown side that comes with it). They accomodated the request but charged her the same price as the regular speciality omelet on the menu. Not a big deal, we're talking about a matter of dollars here. But, that seemed a little stingy. In the past, they acomodated her requests for smaller meals and made the price a little lower, too. That being said, I still really enjoy this place.

California Grill
WONDERFUL meal! This was also the first time I was able to get a window table which made it all the more special. Our table had a direct view of the castle and the fireworks--truly magical. A great way to spend our first dinner. We had a flatbread, spinach, porcini mushroom and fontina cheese--excellent. Also had the pork and polenta. My only surprise was that they no longer serve the famous soufflees (sp!). The server said they did away with them a year ago. I missed having one.

Spoodles
Yummy meal! It was practically dead the night we dined here, at 6:30Pm no less. I hope this one will still be around. It just seems that each time we go, the place isn't that crowded. We are light eaters so we split the salmon and sweet onion risotto dish. We each had the spinach salad with gorgonzola cheese, apples and warm bacon vinegarette.

Rose & Crown Pub
We ate here for the CPDP and we ate entirely TOO much! LOL Appetizer, entree, dessert is a bit much when you tend not to eat much anyway. But, it was a good meal. My mom had the prime rib and yorkshire pudding and I had the fish and chips. The servings were HUGE! For dessert, I had the sinful sticky toffing pudding with vanilla custard (YUM!) and my mom had the white and dark chocolate mousse parfait. With this huge meal, we were glad we ate early (4:45PM).

Potobello Yacht Club
This was our improptu surprise favorite. We were set to do 1900 Park Fare but with the huge Rose and Crown meal the night before, we had no desire for an all you can eat buffet (even IF Pooh was there LOL). So, at the tail end of our shopping excursion at the Marketplace, we decided to head over to Portobello. I have to say, this is a great restaurant. And, judging by the many Wine Spectator accolades on the wall, others have found it to be good, too. The restaurant is beautifully decorated during the holidays with a nice view of the water/Empress Lily boat. I'm not sure if it was b/c it was early or if it is like this all the time but there were also fewer children. So, it was a nice, quiet laid back meal. Nice to not have screaming kids everywhere for a change. We again split a entree: rigatoni with sun dried tomato, olives and sweet fennel sausage in a light white wine sauce. We had two house salads to start. Service was excellent.

If you have any questions, please let me know! :) We didn't really do any lunches since we usually have an early dinner. Just picked up snacks here and there during the day.

I enjoyed your reviews! Thanks!

Great reviews, Misti. Thanks for posting them.
I' can understand your joy about the window table at California Grill. My husband and I had dinner there for the first time last May, and were seated at a window table with a beautiful view and watched the sunset and then fireworks over dessert! Magical!
I am also a fan of the GF restaurants, especially GF Cafe. I hope they can work out their service issues. We've always had very good service there, too. I'm sad to hear they still are not open for dinner. Have you heard whether or not it's still being considered?
And finally, since you skipped 1900 Park Fare, does that mean you missed the bread pudding w/ vanilla sauce?????
Glad you had a great trip.

Debbie

Glad you liked the review! :)

Yes, I missed my bread pudding and vanilla sauce! darn! I guess I'll have to fit it in next time around. I was so overwhelmed by the dessert at Rose and Crown that my sweet tooth needed a break! LOL

I was told the GF Cafe will be closed indefinately for dinner. They even have it deleted from the Grand Floridian guide you have inside your room. The whole thing is curious to me since initially we were told it was closed for a kitchen rehab.

Maybe they'll at least consider extending the lunch hours a bit.
:)

Misti, I do remember the "kitchen rehab" reason for stopping dinner. When I had lunch there in May, I asked our waitress about possibly reopening for dinner. She said it was definitely being considered! I can only hope this is still the case.....you know how long things take there sometimes.
Regarding the bread pudding, isn't it great to know you'll be going back? Always a next time for our favorite desserts!

Debbie

The Portobello Yacht Club sounds wonderful! We ate there years ago when it was the Empress Lilly. How are there prices?

The entree you had sounds delicious! You mention a wine sauce, but was it still a tomato sauce? Just curious!:teeth:

The Portobello Yacht Club is right next door to the Empress Lilly (which houses Fulton's Crab House). The prices were moderate. The pasta dishes ran from $15.95 to $31.95 at the very highe ends. I'd say the average pasta price was $16.95. Entress ran higher at around $23.95 and up. The flatbreads were $8.95 and up. I thought it was worth it. :)

The sauce was a white wine base (very light, almost a broth) with sun-dried tomato. It was VERY yummy!

Thanks for the helpful reviews! I was particularly interested in CP and R&C which I think we'll try this summer when we don't have the kids in tow.

We love CG and R&C. Spoodles sounds so good, too. We've yet to try it. Been years since we've gone to Portabello's but your review may speed up our return!

I wish they would serve dinner again at GFC, too. When we were there in June our server told us that there were rumors that it would open up again by the holidays. Doesn't sound promising. When we were there in October, I noticed a change in service and servers, too. Hopefully the new ones will get up to speed soon:confused: !

Thanks for the reviews, Misti!

Nice reviews!! Glad you like Portobello--my favorite spot in the DD area.
I know what you mean about Spoodles--never anyone in there when we eat dinner (about 6:00 PM). Last time we walked by, all the servers were standing around the front podium, almost pleading for someone to come in and eat. Last time I saw something like that was at Papette Bay Verandah, after they had gotten rid of the hula dancer/combo and changed the menu to Chinese. They went under less than a year later.

Oh Goodness! We also have the Rose & Crown for the Candlelight package on Christmas Eve. If the dinner portions are anything like the lunch portions  DH and DS will be happy, that's for sure.;)

We also have the California Grill booked during our trip. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a window table.

Now I'm wondering if we should add Spoodles to our itinerary.

Hmm...........decisions, decisions.;) ;) ;)

Thanks Misti!!!:D

Have a great trip, Regina! :) Don't eat anything the day of the CP, you'll thank yourself! ;) Or, just take the Tums along like we did. ;)

Good luck for that window table! :)

Portobello will be on my list now. :) I'm really glad I tried it!

I hope they keep Spoodles around--I'd miss it. We always request Andy as our server--great service.

:)

Thank you for the reviews, Misti... especially R&C and PYC. We are planning on trying these two next trip.:D

Did you happen to notice if "The Beefeater" is still on the menue at R&C? It is sliced roast beef with gravy on an English Muffin, with stilton cheese, I believe.:D

No, I didn't see that one. I think I would have notcied it b/c it sounds yummy. Maybe that is on the lunch menu? We were seated as "dinner" techinically even though we ate at 4:45PM.

Have a great trip! :)
