We just returned from a trip with our 3.5 month old, 4 year old and 6 year old. It was much easier than I expected it to be. We nursed around the world with only one negative comment from anyone. We brought our full size stroller and were VERY glad we did as DS was quite comfy in it even though it was bulky on the bus. OF course we only had 2 bus trips since we did a split stay at CR and BC so we had transportation where we wouldn't have to fold it on most trips. Since it was such a slow season the bus wasn't crowded so it was no big deal. Also brought a Mei Tai baby carrier that was helpful too. If anyone has any questions about travel with a baby, I'll be glad to answer them!

We'll be taking a 4 month old in December. What did you take that you really didn't need? What did you take that you couldn't live without? We've traveled before with a 8 month old, but it's been a few years and I'm feeling rusty!

So glad to hear you had a nice time. We traveled there in Aug. with son who was three and dd, who was 4 months at the time.
I agree and for us, it was way easier than I had anticipated.
One thing we bought ahead of time was a stroller fan which was a great buy.
It was baby proof and provided her with just the right amount of air and kept her cool in August!!!

We are going in March - it will be me, DH, DD4 and maybe DD6mos - we may leave the baby with my in-laws. My question is how much your 4 year old wanted to be in the stroller...and would you recommend renting or taking our own stroller?? We are staying at the Dolphin so there won't be much bus travel. Any advice would be great!

Were you able to take your baby any "rides" with you? I am thinking of things more like the trains or the Winnie the Pooh ride...not the Tower of Terror! ehehe ;)

Im happy to hear you had such a good time!! Traveling with a baby isn't as hard as everyone thinks, it just takes a bit more planning...;)

What did you take that you really didn't need? What did you take that you couldn't live without?

We've gotten pretty good at packing light so we didn't really bring anything we didn't need. For the baby I carried into the parks a change of clothes, extra pacifier, blanket, burp cloth, stroller rain cover (a GODSEND since it rained every day), the front pack (also used quite a bit), baby tylenol, gas drops, a little tube or orajel (he just started teething), a compact umbrella for me to use when wearing the front pack, a bottle and can of ready to feed formula (I nurse him but he gets so easily distracted I was worried he wouldn't nurse well for wanting to look around so I had that for backup and did use it a few times but we mostly nursed) and I made up diaper packs. What I do is to put a few wipes into a ziploc sandwich bag and then put that, a disposable change pad and a diaper into a quart size ziploc bag. That way when it is time to change baby's diaper we just had to bring that into the bathroom rather than the whole diaper bag. If the diaper was stinky I could put it into either the sandwich bag or the quart sized bag and toss it. If I didn't the wipes, I just brought that baggie back out and tucked it in the diaper bag and used it with the next round of diaper packs. Every time we returned to the hotel I reloaded the bag and made sure we always had 4 change packs in the bag. That worked out great! We used all of the stuff we carried around except the gas drops. I had a stroller bunting for him that we used on cold days. That was great because I didn't have to worry about his blanket falling off or getting tangled in the wheels.

One thing that was really convenient is that I used a diaper bag that could be attached to the stroller like a saddle bag. Sort of a knock of of these (scroll down to see it in action). We put stuff like diapers and wipes (nothing of value though) into that bag to reduce what we had to carry around. I just put one change pack, the orajel and some hand sanitizer into the camera bag and we carried that with us into/on attractions and left the saddlebag on the stroller. It worked great! At security going into the parks we just made sure we rolled the stroller up to the security person on the side where the bag was attached and they checked it with it still attached.

My question is how much your 4 year old wanted to be in the stroller...and would you recommend renting or taking our own stroller??

This trip was the first where we didn't bring a stoller for the big boys. We went in with the game plan that we would have them walk and just rent a stroller if we needed one. It became pretty obvious that we would need one if we wanted to get much done! We were constantly dragging one or the other of them and with yucky weather and shorter park hours we decided renting was a good idea so we rented a double for them. DH was completely opposed to this at first because it can get so expensive to rent for multiple days but he came around pretty quickly after he saw what a difference it made. Our kids are active at home and not lazy. They COULD have walked but like I said we were dragging one or the other constantly so it was go at a snails pace with people fighting to get around us to go faster and have them saying "my feet hurt" over and over at the end of the day or stroller them. Everyone had a more enjoyable time with strollering them. My kids are big too. My 4 year old is 48" tall and weighs about 62 lbs. My 6 year old is around 53" tall and 67 lbs. They both fit in a double...

IF it were just my 4 year old and he was average 4 year old size, I would have brought a stroller for him. Buying an umbrella stroller is cheaper than renting for multiple days and it's easy to fold up and bring on the bus. The stroller we had for the baby was far from compact when folded but we brought it anyway because he is comfy in it and he can face towards us. He gets fussy if he isn't facing us so it wasn't worth having him not be as comfortable and be fussy just to have a smaller stroller. We stayed at the CR and the BC so not much bus time anyway. I have a Maclaren Volo that I love that I would have brought for him. It only weighs 7 lbs, has a decent size basket and folds up small with a strap for carrying it on your shoulder. It is what we have used for him in the past. You can get a used one on Ebay for around $50 or so. I'd look in to something like that for your 4 year old.

Baby rode anything without a height requirement. :) Pooh was closed for refurb but he rode everything else in Fantasyland that we rode (we skipped Dumbo this trip but he rode everything else). Outside of Fantasy Land, he rode Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Jungle Cruise, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, TTA, Buzz and the train in the MK. At Epcot he rode the new Nemo ride (which he LOVED), the boat ride in the Land, Journey Into the Imagination, Spaceship Earth, and the ride in Norway. At MGM he rode the Backlot Tour and Great Movie Ride. At AK he rode the dinosaurs like Dumbo and the Safari. We joked that he is a future thrill ride fan because he LOVED Pirates and completely freaked out on It's a Small World which most babies LOVE. LOL We did baby swap for the other stuff. The baby swap tickets have an expiration date on them which was 2/28. We asked about that and the CM said it was fine to save for another day or later in the day so we did that if it was getting busy in that area and we wanted to move on. DH and I both got to ride everything we wanted to and the older kids loved that they got 2 trips through the big rides with using baby swap. We did great this trip. Our longest wait time was 6 minutes for anything. :)

Congrats on the new baby! We had a baby boy in October also!

I love this idea. Thanks for sharing it. DS will be almost 6 months when we go to WDW and I will definitely be doing this. Thanks also for sharing your experience with your older kids and the stroller. We have DD7 and DS5 and we're planning to just wait and see if they need one. I'm guessing they will need one, so we'll be prepared if that happens.

Hi, I was wondering if you flew and if so did you check the infant car seat as luggage or carry it onto the plane?

Thanks for the idea about the diaper packs. I think that's a great one! Every little piece of good advice is greatly appreciated!

I am also wondering about the infant carseat on the plane issue. My infant will be a lap child, so I'm sure the infant carseat won't be allowed on the plane. I'm nervous about checking it with luggage and it getting lost. I'm also not looking forward to gate-checking it for fear that it'll get a little beat up and dirty from that.

It's great to see that taking a baby to WDW can be so easy! I can't wait for our upcoming trip! And forgot to mention that the idea of the diaper packs is AWESOME! Thanks for sharing OP!

We'll be taking our almost 4 month old at the first of March. How did the baby do with all the loud noises on rides/fireworks/etc?? Also, how did you do naptimes/bedtimes?

We didn't take our infant seat to WDW because he was a lap baby and we didn't rent a car but we took it to Seattle last fall and just gate checked it. Coming home the airline gave us a huge clear plastic bag to put it in. No problems whatsoever.

Could you please give me some details on the child swap tickets you mentioned? Also, where are strollers not allowed?

The only ones I can think of off hand were The Land and The Seas with Nemo. Also any theatre (Lion King, Nemo etc) you cannot bring the stroller in.

Our DS did awesome on his 3 month trip. He slept through fireworks, parades etc. Loud noises didn't seem to faze him one bit. At that point he was not on a consistent nap schedule and seemed to be quite happy to fall asleep in his stroller.

He usually goes to be at 8 and he just fell asleep in the stroller and we kept on going. We pushed him all around MNSSHP until midnight.

What great ideas! I'm bringing my 3 girls (5, 2.5 and 3 months) next month, so I was wondering about lots of this stuff.

Love that diaper bag - did you say you were able to find a knockoff? Where did you find one? It looks perfect - I'm bringing my Mac Twin Rally and it can be a bit tippy with a heavy bag on the back. I'm also taking a sling, so hopefully we won't need to rent a stroller there. If we do, no big deal though.

I can't believe you got a negative comment about nursing! What was said? That's just silly. Although, I have a bunch of comebacks about nursing and I've never gotten to use one, so maybe I'll get a chance there ;)

Glad you had fun - thanks for the great ideas! (Especially the diaper packs)

I was wondering if you flew and if so did you check the infant car seat as luggage or carry it onto the plane?

We did fly but we didn't bring his carseat. We couldn't buy a ticket for him untill we knew his name and birthday and by the time he was born we couldn't get a seat except in business class on our flights. We got our tickets with frequent flyer points and I couldn't find flights that I could move the 4 of us to and have 4 frequent flyer seats available for us so we had him as a lap baby. Since he wasn't in a seat on the plane and since we used Magical Express where car seats are not an option, we didn't bring the infant seat. For meals we either used infant high chair seats or brought the stroller in to the restaurant with us so no problems there.

How did the baby do with all the loud noises on rides/fireworks/etc??

He actually did great! The first fireworks show we saw I made sure I was somewhere where I could duck into a shop if need be. As long as he was being held and he could see the fireworks, he loved it! The only time he fussed was when there was narration but no fireworks to watch. He would calm down as soon as the fireworks started again. He seemed to love watching them. During one show I just had him in stroller and he started screaming but he calmed as soon as I picked him up. The one time I think loud noises got to him was riding It's A Small World. He flipped out on that but it was late and he was tired so I think the loud music combined with that triggered it.

Also, how did you do naptimes/bedtimes?

During the day he napped in the stroller or the front pack a few days and a few days we went back to the hotel for a nap. As for bedtimes, normally he gets his last feeding around 10 PM and sleeps untill 6 AM so with early park closing being there during slow season, we were able to stick to that no problem. That was my big conern though. He knows he gets a bath, jammies then gets fed so he's happy in the bath (we showered with him at WDW and he seemed to like that) but he starts crying while I am dressing him and I was SO worried about him disturbing people in the next room so I was always rushing that part and worrying the whole time. He didn't sleep straight through the night every night like he does at home but I slept with him in one bed with me, DH in the other bed with DS 4 and DS 6 slept on the day bed so when the baby would wake and fuss, I'd just nurse him back to sleep so he only fussed for a second. Hopefully not enough to disturb anyone else in the next room. Usually him stiring around before he started fussing would wake me up so I could get him latched on before he got really upset.

Mine wasn't just like that. It's actually a knock off of a Skip-Hop Dash but it can be attached just like that (it's a little bigger). Pretty much any Skip Hop bag can be attached like that. Mine is made by Addidas and was available at TJ Maxx and Ross stores for like $15 last summer/early fall. I haven't looked for it again so it may still be available. You can get Skip Hop bags on ebay for less than retail. This one is also available for $19.95. Having that bag was a big help. It kept us from having to lug a big bag around and it kept the stroller basket free for other stuff.

I can't believe you got a negative comment about nursing! What was said?

It was really sort of funny. DH had taken our older sons to ride Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain and I had sat down to feed the baby. There is a smoking area right across from Thunder Mountain that is a covered dock area in front of Tom Sawyer Island. It has rocking chairs and everything there. It looked like it was going to start raining so I went there to sit and feed him. There was no one else around so no one smoking. I fed him and he fell asleep so I had him up on my shoulder. This woman and her husband and maybe 5 or 6 year old DD come over to the area. They were standing outside the covered area for Mom to have a smoke. The daughter starts complaining about stoping for a smoke break and Mom says something like "you have all day to ride rides. Mama just needs 5 minutes for a break." She was looking at a park map and had it in both hands so the cigarette just dangled out of her mouth. DS woke up and started crying so I was getting set to feed him on the other side and she looks up at me and says (with the cigarette still dangling from her mouth) "OH MY GAWD! That is so gross!" Her husband asks what was gross and she says "that woman is taking her (insert 3 letter slang term rhymes with "bit" here) out." Then she looks at me and says "in my day we had a name for women who took out their (insert the same word here in it's plural form) in public places!" Fortunately my brain was functioning well enough to think quick and I replied "yeah....MOM" ;) I had on a nursing top and am good at not putting on a show in fact when I had been feeding DS before a grandfather came to sit and wait while his family did the rides and he sat chatting with me for a while. He had no idea what I was doing untill DS finished and I had to rearrange my shirt to burp him. He blushed a little when he realized what I had been doing but kept right on talking to me (just not looking at me then ;) ). I found the whole thing funny b/c to me it was just humerous that a woman who couldn't even be bothered to hold her own cigarette and just let it dangle out of her mouth was saying that me breastfeeding was gross. :rotfl: Beyond that, no rude comments or looks. I actually had a nice conversation about nursing with another Mom in the play area at the end of Mission Space while we both waited for our families. :) The only other thing we had happen was on a bus ride there was a mom and preteen age son sitting across from us who looked to be from another country/culture. DS started to fuss on the ride so I started to feed him. When the Mom saw what I was doing she sent her son (looked to be maybe 12 or 13) up to the front of the bus to sit with his Dad but then she smiled at me and asked how old DS was and had a nice conversation with us so I am guessing she sent her son up there just in case he was feeling uncomfy rather than because she was offended or anything.
