We took TTC from the airport to AKL. We had called ahead for a van (6 of us) & had planned a grocery stop at Albertson's. We were told that Publix was not an option. I had requested Mohammed (after reading great stuff about him on this board) & a non-smoking driver for medical reasons.
DS (20) was unaware of this arrangement & his mouth dropped open when he saw the driver with our name at the bottom of the escalator! I had to tell him 4 times that this was actually cheaper than Mears!
Anyway, the driver didn't introduce himself (turned out to be David & TTC had "farmed out" the contract to an independent person. I was not the first person in our party to reach the driver, as I was hobbling along with a cane. My sister got there first & tried to tell him that he needed to talk to me, but he just took off toward the baggage carousel. As we approached the baggage carousel, DH & DS were busy grabbing bags when David snagged someone with a cart who was angling for a job. He tossed a quick "have him get the bags" over the shoulder & sort of disappeared. DH was a little upset because no one knew what was happening. So we wound up tipping this guy as well as the driver. No biggy, but we didn't have the change handy as it was unexpected.
The driver directed the group to go out the doors to the left & after we walked some distance called us back - he was to the right. He was standing by the van smoking - with the smoke blowing into the van. On the way over to AKL, he told us his name & that he does this for Tiffany when he has no fares of his own. (He's independent.) We asked where he was going, because he took the scenic route. We passed a Publix (we had cancelled the stop) so I'm not sure why TTC said we couldn't stop there when I called. We weren't asked if we preferred fast or scenic & the scenic route did take a little longer.
We were picked up by an actual TTC van for our return. I forget the driver's name, but he was very professional & nice.
Although I did have trouble with the smoke on the driver's clothing (I am very allergic to it) I would use TTC again. Next time, I'll just make sure I stress about the smoking.
