Just back - LOVED Mission Space!

I absolutely hated Mission: SPACE. I do not normally get motion sickness, neither does my friend that I went with. It was July 18th, and there was a sign out in front that said "PREVIEW MISSION: SPACE!" I was so excited because I'd heard all about it, and everyone said it was going to be sooo neat. Then I rode it. I hadn't eaten, either. The take-off is incredible... how do they get your cheeks to suck back into the seat???? That was a good part.. I didn't feel nauseated at all during the ride, but when we got off... oh my god. I will never ride it again. Ever. This is much, much, much more intense than anything I have ridden at Disney World. Anyone who has the slightest bit of motion sickness should NOT, I repeat, NOT ride this ride. I had to sit down for twenty minutes before I felt normal again.

Sorry you had a bad experience! I know that it makes a small percentage of people sick. My DH wasn't with us this trip. Normally he can't do some rides like roller coasters with inversions and the spinning teacups, although he can ride Star Tours and Body Wars without any problem. He still wants to give Mission Space a try - I hope he can tolerate it!

Unless you suffer from motion sickness, you should be fine on this ride. The key is to keep your head back and only look straight ahead. This cannot be stressed enough. I can't remember all the exact names, but the inner ear has a little tube that has water in it. As you move it the water moves and levels out which sends messages to your brain to help keep you balanced and from feeling dizzy. On a ride like mission space, if you keep your head still and look straight ahead, the ear will naturally adjust to the high speed of spinning the ride uses to create the illusion of takeoff. However, once you start moving your head, this process is thrown off and that leads to dizziness and nausea. Some peoples bodies are naturally better at adjusting to motion than others, but unless you are unuasly prone to motion sickness, just follow the instructions and you should be ok. This is a very UNscientific explaination, but I hope it helps.

BTW, I liked the ride, and take off was AWESOME, but I came away feeling that my expectations had not been met. Sometimes these boards tend to give too much information and raise the bar to unrealistically high levels. I hope that you are able to enjoy the ride though!

Sounds like this would be a ride where you'd lose none of the fun by using the single riders line, since you can't even look around at your fellow riders. Whatd'ya think? Also, can the post show area be accessed from outside or do you have to at least go through the line?

How long does the ride take once you get into your seat?

Paula J,

you are correct - although using the Singles line makes it improbable that you will be assigned the Pilot or Commander position. The post-show area is accessible via the merch shop - no need to wait in line.

Flora,

it's just under four minutes long (including the countdown), but you usually sit there for a minute or two before that starts, listening to inaudible radio transmissions while the CMs go from capsule to capsule to make sure everyone's restraints are locked and that nobody is freaking out at the last minute. During that time the Capcom will also go over your assignment with you again.

I thought it was more fun riding with my son that separately in single riders, but if the standby line was longer than 15 minutes, we went with single riders. I found the standby line time was always shorter than posted. By the time the ride officially opens and everyone knows about it, the lines will probably be much longer.

For those who've ridden it:

1. Is the ride spinning the entire 4 minutes, or just for the first portion of the 'launch'?

2. Is an outside position in the capsule any better or worse, motion wise, than an inside?

Just trying to gauge nausea potential!

1. It is hard to tell. I think that the ride is spinning at least slowly from launch until shortly before the landing, with four sequences where the spinning is quite rapid (Launch, second stage thruster firing, lunar gravity assist, landing). The thing is so smooth that your only indicator of how far you are moving is how hard you are being pushed back in your seat, really.

2. I haven't quite figured that out yet, so I don't want to speculate. The difference isn't major in any case.

nrose101 Mission Space will be open this weekend, but it is a preview time for AP holder.
And yes we will be there.........
