My family and I just returned from a weekend trip to the new JW Marriott Grande Lakes in Orlando. We had the special Marriott Rewards price of $159 a night for a lake/pool/golf course view and a breakfast buffet for two. We had a fabulous time and would highly recommend this hotel.

Location: 2 miles past Sea World on Central Florida Parkway. About 3 miles off of 1-4. Hotel is on 500 acres it shares with the new Ritz Carlton. The conference center is gorgeous and it connects the 2 hotels. When staying at the JW you can also use all the Ritz facilities.

Rooms: Our room was spotless with very nice furniture. It was smaller than I expected. However, the bathroom was huge-all marble with a separate tub and shower. We did not have a balcony but most rooms had a small one w/o furniture. I would request a balcony for the next time.

Pool: AWESOME!! The Marriott pool has four swimming areas connected by a lazy river. The wonderful tropical landscaping provides plenty of shade but there are lots of spots to get some sun. There is also an 11-person hot tub with a waterfall, a 17- person hot tub with a fountain and small toddlers splash pool with an artificial alligator. The pool is 24.000 sq ft and has a bathing load of 1,592 people! They have ping-pong, pool table and volleyball nearby. You can also take advantage of the pools located at the adjacent Ritz property. Those pools are quieter and have padded lounge chairs.

View: Our room was located on the 22nd floor facing the pool, lake and golf course. The view was spectacular and you could see Sea World, Epcot and the Magic Kingdom. There are 26 floors and the higher the floor, the better the view. I would recommend requesting a lake/golf view when booking your room.

Food: We ate dinner at the Quench Bar and Grill, located at the pool. The food was average (your typical poolside eatery fare). We had the breakfast buffet at Citron, which was excellent. They had a create-your-own-omelet station, baked goods in a bakery setting, pancakes, eggs, waffles, cereal bar and a WIDE variety of fresh fruits. The cost was $15.95 and $7.50 (a bit of a splurge, but well worth it). The on-site Starbucks has their standard baked goods and drink menu. The lobby lounge has its own sushi-raw bar and features live entertainment.

Misc.: Every Saturday evening (weather permitting) there is a "dive-in" movie at the pool. They showed "Monster's Inc." while we were there. There is a small kids play area near the pool. The fitness room at the Ritz Spa is open 24 hours a day and is available to the JW Marriot guests at no additional fee. (there is a fee to use the steam room and dry sauna). There is a pedestrian track that links both properties together, for those who prefer to walk outdoors. Also, various kids activities are available-some free and some with a charge. We don't golf but thought the on-site golf course was beautiful.

The only negative fellow Dis-Boarders.....NO DISNEY CHANNEL in the room!! Our DD's were shocked (LOL).

Hope this is helpful. If you have any questions, please ask.

WOW-Thanks seastar!!
I am getting so excited about my upcoming 2 nights at this resort!!!! So,you do recommend a high floor for the view??? And it did not take you long to get from room to pool??? Did you have your own pool tubes as TripletDad suggested?? We plan to hang around the pool a lot-I am PRAYING for good weather for Labor Day!:bounce:

You are going to love this place!! We were on the 22nd floor and our view was fantastic so go high. Make sure you get what they call a "lake/golf front" room. These rooms also have a view of the pool, Sea World and off in the distance, Epcot and Magic Kingdom. It is quick to get to the pool-just an elevator ride and a short walk out back. We did take TripletDad's advice and brought
our own tubes. I got the 30 inch ones from the Dollar Tree for our girls. The JW lends out noodles and rents nice tubes: $3 an hour or $7 for 5 hours. Don't worry about the weather- Florida is famous for storms one minute and sun the next.

I am also glad to hear that the landscaping is nice. I thought due to the newness of the resort that the greenery might still be sparse. Thanks again for the wonderful report-well done!
Anyone else going in August??

Good to hear your report, Seastar. I visited there for a pre-opening tour at the end of May and was very impressed by how it was shaping up. I plan to take a look myself at the end of August, but did you look into any of the other restaurants (another 5, I think) while you were there?

SimonV:

We only ate at the Quench Bar & Grill for dinner, Citron for breakfast and Starbuck's for coffee. There is also the Lobby Lounge for drinks/sushi and Primo for an upscale dinner. There are also restaurants you could go to at the Ritz but I don't have any info. Citron is open for all three meals-the breakfast buffet was excellent.

KittenLittle:

The landscaping is going to blow you away! We couldn't believe how nice it was for a new resort. The long winding driveway up
to the JW will impress you. There are many full-size palm trees throughout the property.

seastar-you have made my day!
Now,about the kids. We will have DD-age 10 with us.The pool area sounds enormous,so I know I will need to stick with her at all times.DH might go off to play golf or try out the fitness room. What about childcare if we both want to go to the Ritz Fitness facilities? Is the Lobby Lounge kid-friendly?
Thanks again,dear seastar!!;)

Hello Again Kitten Little:

We did not use the childcare. The attendant at the JW Marriott stated that they only have an activity center for the kids, however the RitzKids club provides actual childcare. I don't have the fee schedule. The activities at the JW looked like a lot of fun. The activities provided at no cost were an outdoor slip and slide, a baseball game, diving games in the pool, etc. The activities with an additional fee were tie dye, arts & crafts, make your own sundae, etc.

The Marriott does not have a lifeguard on duty, however there are stations throughout the pool area manned by Marriott associates (beware...they are armed with high powered water guns :-). Due to the vast space of the pool area, I would plan on being with your DD at all times. They refer to their buddy system, which basically recommends all pool guests to be in groups of two or more.

The lobby lounge is an extension of the hotel lobby, which is a very large open area with lots of chairs and comfy sofas. I believe the entire area is non-smoking. I noticed that adults congregated around the actual bar, while families with smaller children used the area surrounding the bar. The food (sushi) is not "kid friendly". There was nice live entertainment each night...your typical lounge lizard song list.

Thanks! I don't think I will have a whole LOT of time to enjoy the resort, but who knows. I am flying in on Tuesday afternoon and thought about renting a car for the day and going to Disney, but maybe I will just go to the hotel and explore. I know Wed is packed solid and we leave on Thursday.

Seastar,

Hey just wondering how you got that rate from Marriott? We are booked there for 12/5-12/7 and are $207 a night, I'm a platnum rewards member and hope to be bumped up to a suite.

Thanks,
Hulabaloo
