We posted that we were at RNR single rider line. As we entered going from outside to inside the ride area, immediately inside before entering the preshow area, there were these old vintage style show advertisement boards that had my son's name as well as the city we were from. That was a really cool thing and we were impressed with the technology to lift that info from likely, his magic band (we were not scanned as this was not fastpass return)

Now, we all know that our magic bands need to be pressed up against door scanners and park ticket entrance turnstyles to register- those are "low sensitivity devices" that need you to put your MB right up against it. Little did we know that there are devices with higher sensitivity that can read your information as you walk through say an entrance doorway.

So while this is cool, is it possible that Disney is continually (or in certain locations aside from Park entrances and FP returns) scanning your information to use it for demographic or marketing data? Is this something that we signed away when we clicked on that "I agree to terms"? Again, not against it but just noted that from our RNR experience.

Yes, that's kind of the whole point of Magic Bands.

This ability has always been a part of the MB's. It was mentioned when they were first introduced.

They use the long range scanner to add your ride photos to your MDE, too. If you don't like them doing it, you don't need to use a MB. I'm SURE they are using the data for demographic and marketing data, and for knowing what parts of the park people linger in, etc.

Is this something that we signed away when we clicked on that "I agree to terms"?

Yep.

I downloaded the most recent update in the T&C.

RADIO FREQUENCY CARDS AND MAGICBANDS

In order to deliver MyMagic+, we utilize radio frequency technology-enabled cards and MagicBands (“RF Devices”). Depending on the MyMagic+ benefits you have purchased, you and each member of your Party will be issued one or more unique RF Device(s), which allow us to authenticate the individual using an RF Device and the benefits associated with that individual.
Your RF Device may be used in one or more of the following ways: for entry to the parks (valid admission required), for guests of select Walt Disney World Resort hotels, to access your room, for redemption of your Disney FastPass+ selections; and for activating your Memory Maker entitlements. In addition, as described in the “Online Check-in Service” section of these Terms, guests of select Walt Disney World Resort hotels will have the option to use their RF Device to make purchases at various dining, retail and other select locations throughout the Resort.

Each MagicBand contains an HF radio frequency device and a transmitter which sends and receives RF signals through a small antenna inside the MagicBand. Each RF Card contains a passive HF radio frequency chip. Some of your benefits will be unlocked by "touching" your MagicBand or card to short-range reader touch points located at the Resort, including access to your Disney Resort hotel room, entry to a Disney theme park or making purchases at select Resort locations. For security purposes, you may also be required to provide additional authentication information to enable certain functions, such as a biometric read or PIN. The MagicBands can also be read by long-range readers placed in select locations throughout the Resort and used, in conjunction with your Site/App account information, to deliver personalized experiences to you (if you have linked your MagicBand with your Site/App account), photos and videos, as well as provide information that helps us improve the overall experience in our parks.
Guests can participate in MyMagic+ and visit the Resort without using the MagicBand by choosing an RF Card, which cannot be detected by the long-range readers; however, certain features of MyMagic+ are dependent upon long-range readers, including automatic delivery of certain attraction photos, videos, other digital content and some personalized offerings, which are only available to guests using a MagicBand that is linked to their Site/App account.

From there...

Are all guests required to participate in MyMagic+?

Guests can enjoy admission to the parks without having to participate in MyMagic+, register on the My Disney Experience website or provide any personal information. Guests who choose to participate in MyMagic+ and register on My Disney Experience will be able to use the FastPass+ service, make dining reservations online, and enjoy the convenience of having their tickets, FastPass+ selections, Resort room access and other enhanced features all in one place. Guests participating in MyMagic+ always have the option to use a card instead of a MagicBand. Guests can also choose whether to use their RF Device to make purchases at select Resort locations.

You are way behind the times here as this was a LARGE part of all conversation when MB came out, even in general public news. YES, you have 2 RFID chips in your band, passive and active. The active is what generated the interactive. This is probably only the beginning of what this chip will be able to generate.

YES they are tracking your location for many purposes, some you will have no awareness of, some you will see interactive and ride photos and down the road I imagine based on your location offers coming from Disney to help you spend more money. As time goes on I expect more and more RFID trackers installed throughout. This was part of the huge investment they made in the MB technology.

If you don't like it, don't wear it, get a RFID proof bag. Me, I don't care at all. I'm on their property. Down the road if it leads to some coupons and offers to keep me in the parks or dining, fine with me. If they use the data to shift CMs to more crowded areas of the park, great. If they use the data to determine that a particular shop is not drawing people inside and they need to change the exterior, that works. Has many functions for Disney, and none of it bothers me.

To be clear, Disney's scanners see:

"Band #XXXX-YYYY-ZZZZ is in the entrance to RNRC."

NOT

"John Smith, Age XX, Birthday mm/dd/yyyy, from Anytown, TX staying at Beach Club Room #### is in the entrance to RNRC"

Yes, the other information can be associated with the band in the back-end, but it is not stored or read from the band.

I wonder if they put a scanner up on the second floor of Imagination in case someone sneaks up there.

I am already uncomfortable with the amount of personal information Disney has on me. The Magic Bands, tracking our touring through the property, crossed the line for me. We've never used them.

We laugh about Magic Band tracking. I wear my current band a carry our older set (five total in my camera bag) when we're not using them. At the macro level it doesn't make much of a difference but if they're tracking things like male versus female then it might get interesting in terms of rest room use.

Why not just get a card instead of the band?
A band arrived in the mail for free. I don't know anything about "cards". Do they have the same features? Does your food find you at BOG if you have a card? If I decide I do want a ride photo can a card do that? I do use the features of the MB but only when I want to.

The first time I wore a MB in AK I had a survey taker walk up and greet me by name. That was creepy. So now, into the bag goes the MB. Plus I enjoy feeling like a data ghost wandering the park appearing and disappearing randomly during the day.

- You may request a card at your hotel like the old days.
- They can do anything the MB can do with the passive chip, mickey-to-mickey.
- They can not find you at BOG, you will be given a magic rose.
- It can not automatically pick up a ride photo, you must scan your card at the photo booth BUT 7DMT does not have that so you will not get a photo without a MB.
