Just Back. Issue 1: Profiling at Park Entrance..

As an airline employee all I can say is they better have the same policy for the employee entrance and are checking all delivery trucks/ deliveries. If not, then checking even bags for guests is pointless

Currently, there is a job posting for an Intelligence Analyst for the Disneyland Resort. Here are two of the Responsibilities for that role:

• The Intelligence Analyst will track and analyze emerging threats, both domestically and internationally, and contextualize threats specific to company assets and personnel. This may include terrorism, social and political activism, crime, cyber threats and cultural and societal trends.
• Proactively identify threats and risks to the Disneyland Resort or the other segments of The Walt Disney Company.

If a company is concerned enough about security to have someone analyzing threats, they're certainly going to be doing the easy stuff like checking delivery trucks.

the only way that this debate will end is when Disney makes everyone go through the metal detectors, Universal has about 15 metal detectors at their entrance to CityWalk and the parks, I never wait for more than 5 minutes to get through them, even with the bag check.
It's silly to me that they would have these "security" measures in place but there's no one checking bags to go through the TTC, you can basically board the monorail at TTC without a check, go to MK, or the resorts or Epcot on them, without anyone checking...
At the parks they have undercover people profiling, you can see them hanging around the bag check area (before or after it) with a baseball cap, dark sunglasses and an ear piece, they had them for years now
They don't have metal detectors for CM entrances, I'm not sure about scanning trucks but I seriously doubt it.
I'm a 42 hispanic female and an AP that goes to the parks at least once a week, and when they started the "random" metal detectors I got stopped every time, for the first month, after that I haven't been stopped again...statistically that doesn't make sense

Profiling is not necessarily a bad thing; in some situations it is needed

And racial profiling and profiling are not the same thing.

I would hope that Disney is not just checking people with darker skin. Several of the mass shootings in recent American history have been crazed white men.
Checking men between 15 and 60 more often than seniors, children, women would make sense, though, because most attacks are a man/men (or at least have a man involved).

If Disney is just doing their lousy job at bag checks and some truly random metal detection, no one is really any safer.

I agree with all of that, especially the bolded. They need to address those areas if they are really serious about this.

exactly, and you see this everyday, when you are inside the parks and you someone is using a selfie stick, they got through bag check with that, maybe didn't get to go through the "random" metal detector check, and they bring it into the parks....selfie sticks are relatively harmless but they can bring something even worse.
In conclusion, as someone who visits the parks a lot and have done so for the past 18 years, we are no safer now that we were back then. If people have a false sense of security because they have these metal detectors than good for them

If Disney was really serious, they would send everyone through the detectors. If they were really serious, they would move the screening so that it was done before someone boards a crowded monorail, ferry boat, or bus. There was a story posted on here that someone didn't want to go through the bother when they were selected, refused, walked out, blended into the crowd for awhile, went back through bag check again without being selected and entered. If they were really serious, they would escort anyone who refused out. These security measures are purely for show, to make guests feel safer. Sure, they might catch someone in the process and that's a bonus for them, but a smart, determined person, they aren't stopping anything.

We noticed a few more actual police officers and dogs this trip, but they also need to add security that could actually stop a person...the elderly, overweight, unarmed woman checking my bag probably isn't going to be able to stop anyone who does not want to be stopped.

My husband was picked almost every park entry over a 9 night trip, and he is white, middle-class, middle-aged. Doesn't seem to be any profiling in that situation.

32 y.o., mother of two, with DH, both kids and a stroller and I've been randomly selected.

It appears these days, everything Disney does will upset someone. Increased their security and people still aren't happy. I don't mind being picked, I'm happy to take the two minutes out to know that Disney security are taking extra measures to keep us safe while enjoying the magic.

I've been selected 3 times during a 4 day visit..........Always thanked them doing a difficult job and looking to protect us. It's like drug testing.........never had a problem with it........because I had nothing to worry about. For the record I'm a middle-aged white guy.

Yeah. 4 times in a row when I ate at McDonalds I won a food prize each time.

I've travelled to Vegas many times over the past 10 years. I've only hit a jackpot on slot machines twice. Same trip, two different hotels, within 2 hours of each other. (And we're talking shut down the machines and sign the tax forms jackpots*) Was that rigged?

For the metal detectors to really be worthwhile Disney has to get a certain percentage of people through them or they're all just meaningless. Ideally they'd put EVERYBODY through them but for some reason they're not doing that (cost, crowds, perception, who knows?) but if they're putting more than 50% of the crowd through the detectors and if it's closer to 66% it's very likely you're going to get picked every time because you have a 2/3 chance of getting picked.

(* and by the time the government was done with me they took HALF my winnings anyway. which didn't leave me with much after my celebratory dinner and bar hop with my friends the rest of the night! )

The people checking the bags aren't the ones who are going to be DOING the security. They are simply the front line, slowing things down.

If you've never seen something funky happen and then watch the undercover security people materialize, you've missed a (relative) treat. It's astonishing how many tourists actually aren't.

It may be neither profiling nor random why some get chosen more than others. This may have already been suggested. Sorry, didn't read all 6 pages of posts.
Sometimes, we interact with some people more than others, for a variety of reasons. Some people are just more approachable. It is very possible that when a security officer scans a crowd of people, some stand out. It may be their height, weight, color of clothing they tend to wear, a smile etc. We all tend to "notice" some people more than others. Without a conscious effort, some may be "that" person that gets picked.
I get picked to carry that red tag through the queue far more often than random. I have also been the butt of the jokes in Monster's Inc more often than random. I guess I have "that guy" look.

There is more to profiling than race. Disney may not be racially profiling, but that doesn't mean they aren't profiling at all.
