We just returned this past weekend from our first Disney Cruise aboard the Wonder - we took the baby (11 months old!) and we had a blast! Here are my thoughts:

Cabins - Booked a Cat. 11 Gty based on opinions on these boards and we felt that it was just too small and confining without the window. We were in Cabin 5139 and had a great cabin steward named Paulito. We are extremely neat and tidy people, so our cabin pretty much looks each day how we entered it on the first day, and so this helped with us not feeling so stuffy. Needless to say, we will be booking a bigger cabin next time although the amenities and quality of this cabin were fabulous.

Food - It was good, but not exceptional. Coming from a restaurant family with my dad being a chef, I am a bit spoiled, but I know how to review each meal on its own merits; more specifically, I didn't compare meals to each other unless we were in the same dining room. All in all, we were very disappointed in Tritons and felt that our food, presentation and selection was much better in Parrot Cay, Animator's and room service.

Servers - Our servers were ok. After having water dropped on me 2 nights in a row, as well as assistant server not remembering our fav drinks (apple juice & lemonade ) the entire cruise, my DH and I felt that they we received average servers. Our main server was better at explaining the next day's events than offering food selections, but all in all, our dining experiences were ok. We did feel that the head servers were extremely arrogant and not interested in anything but securing larger tips (see post below), but that is another can of worms all together. I have allergies and sensitivities, and they did their best to accomodate, but basically I just ate white rice and steamed veggies all week as they didn't really seem too interested in offering other selections.

Entertainment - Fabulous! These performers are great and it shows. We did feel that Hercules the Musical is too adult-oriented and needs to be toned down in regards to sexual inuendo, political jokes, etc... or they should only offer a late showing for adults only. This opinion was shared by a lot of other parents who we talked to throughout our cruise.

Staff - Exceptional! We didn't expect anything less than Disney quality service, so our expectations were definitely met here.

Tipping - Don't want to start a debate, or rile people up, but the tipping situation was a problem. Our servers and head waiter were fabulous on the last night, and very grumpy the last morning after tips had been handed out - this is not acceptable in our opinion. The whole concept of tipping has been lost as it should be for exceptional service, but instead it's used as a wage subsidy. My DH is a banker and their motto is: Always be closing. You need to treat your clients in a good manner, 100% of the time - not just on the last night in order to secure an envelope of tips. Needless to say, this was the most stressful and disappointing part of our cruise.

Castaway Cay - Very beautiful, but hot! We brought along a tent for the baby, and it was still sweltering hot. We left the island early, but greatly enjoyed ourselves while we were there. This is a destination all on its own!

Infants/Kids - We had no problems with our DD, thanks to Disney's care in ensuring that infants have what they need. Didn't use nursery, but we talked to other parents who did, and they said it was phenomenal. As a teacher, I looked into the nursery and Oceaneer's Lab, and I was extremely impressed with the quality of programming, cleanliness, etc... Will not hesitate to use these services when DD is older.

Suggestions/Concerns - The biggest problems were: character interaction, photos, survey limitations & late dinner seating.

Characters - They need to have characters out more times throughout the day, as well as offer Mickey/Minnie formal picture each night of cruise. We were never able to get a photo of both characters and this greatly disappointed us. They need to give each family a ticket that can be used once throughout the cruise to ensure that each family is offered the opportunity to get this photo. We felt that they mostly catered to the early dinner seating people as the times for photos were not doable for those of us with late seating. We were told at least 5 times that, "Sorry, the last family has already been selected, and you'll have to return at another time for photos." My DH and I were ready to scream after 2 days of this since our cruise was only 4 days in length! I know that being a character is hard and hot, but this is the area in which everyone usually wants to utilize in some fashion, and in my opinion, they need to tweak their schedules a bit more.

Photos - The common practice on cruise ships to take lots of photos and then throw them away has got to stop. It's very wasteful and ridiculous! The prices are even more ridiculous, and it's insulting that they would rather throw out photos then give discounts to guests. The photos aren't the greatest quality either, and so this is one area that they need to improve upon. My DH and I did purchase 2 photos and would have purchased a few more, but the astronomical prices (factor in exchange rate and ouch!) kept us from doing so.

Surveys - They take the guest surveys very seriously, but they only allow for bubble answers and no comments. As a teacher with a considerable amount of research expertise, this in itself limits your ability to get fair and accurate assessments - perhaps this is Disney's goal. Regardless, guests must be allowed to write comments on a variety of cruise experiences as this will only serve to give Disney a more realistic picture of what guests like or dislike about cruise.

Late dinner - Disney should ensure that all families if so requested have early seating - especially with an infant. Saw many couples without kids at early seating. I know people have dining preferences, and I myself have low blood suger and eat early myself, but I was able to eat snacks and such to tide me over as we were stuck with the late seating. I'm not important, but my infant is, and it was just too late for her to be up each night - and we are still paying for it this week as she can't fall asleep each night until after 10:00 p.m.

All in all, we had a great cruise and can't imagine sailing on another ship ever again (we've only ever been on Norwegian and it can't even compare to Disney!) We do hope they improve on the things mentioned above as they would only serve to make everyone's cruise even more enjoyable.

thank you for taking the time to write all of that! I was wondering if you left tips? and how much?? sorry, I am not trying to be rude, Just wondering. I usually tip GREAT for GREAT service, but have a major problem with poor service. ( I was a waitress in school, and I expect the service that I provided )

Just wondering why you didn't have the early dinner seating..if you booked yourself, or did the TA do this to you. Obviously, you know about these boards, so you know..late dinner, means very late dinner.

We found the characters to be more than abundantly available.

Food, just ok..well, yest, and when you talk with people from other cruises..they say the same thing. It is quite an accomplishment to have the food ready like they do, for 1000 people at a time...and make it taste the least bit good. It could be a whole lot worse.

Our pics on both cruises have come out wonderfully..and we love that they take so many..as we don't always have a camera with us at just the right time.

The kids at the shows..especially hercules..love it. Of course, we all raise our children differently. We don't hide anything from ours..as the world is a crazy place and we want them to be prepared in life.

Interesting read :)

As for the families with children being ensured early (main dining) sorry but we all pay the same and personally our family prefers Early dining (we have one 11 year old daughter but if travelling alone would prefer it). We aren't late eaters and we purposely book our cruises early and one of the reasons IS to get early dining.
It is a logistical impossiblility to have everyone with young children eating early. Just not enough space.

I'm glad you enjoyed (well most of it anyway) your cruise and to ensure your early dining book early. You'll have no problem getting it then, and if not go and put yourself on the wait list and see the staff as soon as you arrive onboard. They are very helpful.
Cheers,
Grumbo

I agree with you about the food...It was fine but I wasnt impressed..

About the character interaction...I too had issues and I had First Seating... Since we are Florida residents and visit Disney often, we have alot of character pics... They only one we really wanted was the one with Mickey and Minnie in their Captains outfits... We were not able to do it.. It was either too early and we were getting ready for dinner or to late after dinner... By the time we hit the lines, each time we were turned away. It was too bad, but what can you do... I wish they would have had more opportunities for that pic...

But I do agree that it was a WONDERFUL cruise and the staff was unbelievable...the shows were amazing, and we even had to experience the Clinic with our son and the doctor on board was great too...

Cant wait to take another one!

Amen to the pics. What a waste! If the price were somewhat lower, possible higher sales.

I agree- too much waste causes high picture prices. I really am surprised they dont use digital images that can be looked at on a screen and printed out only if purchased. (Similar to the thrill ride picture system).

Excellent Post from a first time DIS Cruiser. Glad you had a nice time and that your baby could enjoy too.

I agree with you on the tips. Last year we had given our tips the night before and said our good-by's to our super servers cause they would be leaving for their 3 month break and would not be with us for breakfast ... well guess what, the Head Server (Guy/Girl in Tux coat) seemed to have forgot about us at breakfast and we literally had to flag down other servers to get our breakfast. Needless to say we'll delay in our tips for the Head Dining Room Server till we are leaving the ship ... he fell down in his job.

This will be our 5th or 6th annual cruise and I must say that only once did we ever have less than super table waiters/servers. Some we have met up with a year or two later and they still remembered us and took the time to get into a lively conversation with us. Some have even been promoted and we searched them out to congratulate them.

The pictures, I agree need work. I also think your idea of a ticket to have that choice photo with Mickey, Minnie & Goofy is a super idea. It's not much better on the 7 day either.

Speaking of the 7 day cruise ... you should try it. You sure won't do anything less after you try it once. We still haven't been able to see everything we want to on the ship!

As far as the survey ... if you want to you can always mail in your survey with as much detail as you want to. I've done that myself and felt I was better able to express myself.

Now to really get you going, think CC .............

Thanks for honestly sharing.

I agree especially about tipping. I've worked as a waitress and my son is working his way through college as a waiter but I refuse to overtip for poor service. And that nonsense about acting grumpy the next day - unacceptable!

Glad you had a good time.

That's an excellent suggestion!! :) I've heard some cruise lines actually offer a service where you can scan through the digital pics on your stateroom tv!! :smooth:

I'm sure they could have all the pics available digitally, and you can sort by day, event, character, etc. You'd still have to scan thru other people's pics to find yours, but once you find it and you like it then you click that you want to purchase it (and they'd automatically charge it to your stateroom & gee, maybe even DELIVER it???) :hyper: As long as the system does NOT allow you to DELETE any pics (so you don't "accidentally" delete someone else's pictures!! :earseek: ) this would be such a cool concept!! :teeth:

This is one of my complaints, as well.

That is such an excellent idea! ::yes::

Tiger - excellent summary - I agree on your 2 principal critisism - (1) food, and (2) Shutters.

I ve found the food to be average to good on our cruises - this is not a major issue for us as the food is not the drawing card to this cruise in our opinion - but I have never been blown away by the food as some others have posted.

Shutters needs work - this is the only place on the ship that I experienced non-Disney-like service - staff was very pushy - also we purchased a package but many our pictures were developed in sizes not included in the package - this was very aggrevating. Also the frenzied atmosphere in there is unpleasant - always seemed to be very crowded. Ivanova's idea about in-room screening is excellent - we would be inclined to buy more if we did not have to deal with Shutters directly.

Great trip report. Have to agree about Shutters esp. when you do the conversion. We found this wasn't a big issue for us though as being 2 adults we didn't have our pictures taken a lot!

We thought the food was good -- if we aren't cooking and/or cleaning I have to admit we aren't that fussy. The only place we didn't like the food or the service was at Palo -- don't flame me it just wasn't that great. We went for brunch and sat in the far room and it was just too hot to be enjoyable and the servers didn't seem to care at all. Dinner wasn't any better as our server didn't seem to care at all about anything. Chocolate souffle was good though!

We had great servers and I think we were spoiled. Our servers did remember what each of us drank each night (we were on a 7 night cruise) and there were 14 of us at the table! We'll see what happens this year.

Anyway glad that you still had a good time!!

I agree Shutters can be improved, some great ideas have been posted.

I'm sorry that you were not able to get early seating. Did you book not that far in advance? I would have chosen to put off my cruise date for one that still had early seating available, but that is me. I would rather wait to get exactly what I want then to make do with second best. I would not be happy if childless couples were bumped from early seating to make room for later bookings with children. We with children, have to be careful to not take on an "entitled" attitude ;) , if you know what I mean.

Thanks for writing up your thoughts. I think it helps people to have a well rounded picture of what to expect :sunny: .

I too just returned from the Wonder and would agree with your observations. In regards to the Head Server...I did not want to tip this person, but felt as though I HAD too. Our Head server reminded me of a slimy used car salesperson (no offense to you honest used car salesmen!). And our room host, did his job but did not go out of his way to do anything extra.

All in all, we enjoyed the cruise and I am currently working on hubby to book a 7 day soon!

I thought I was the only person who felt this way - we had a similar experience on cruise #1 in 1999, and did not even try to go back on our last cruise in 2004. Most posts rave about Palo's, but I don't share that opinion. I guess this is one of those examples where 2 people can have wildly different impressions of the same thing.

I went on the 5/1 Eastern cruise with my 5 year old daughter and we had late dinner (booked 5 months in advance but no early option left at that point). Worked out fine for us. She was certainly tired as dessert rolled around, but our servers made sure the kids got their food quickly. A big plus to having the late dinner with kids is that my daughter was wide awake for the shows (one of the highlights of the cruise for her). Not sure she would have made it through the later show.

Glad my post was informative. Some more thoughts after reading everyone's great responses:

Photos - My DH actually suggested to the staff member in Shutters that they need to have a digital screening process, and they said perhaps in the future, and then told him to throw out all of the photos that we didn't want! They don't really seem to care about the waste as they are only interested in selling photos and frames.

Early booking/Early dinner - We booked in January and were supposed to be waitlisted for early seating, but this didn't materialize. I don't want it to seem as though I have an entitlement attitude, but as someone with low blood sugar, I have to eat early each night, and I have given up seats many times at different events so that children can be seated at an early time - it just means that I have to plan accordingly in order to take care of my food needs, but it's something that I am more than willing to do. If my DH and I didn't have an infant, we would have for sure chosen the late seating so that families with children could have eaten dinner at the earlier seating. I'm not sure what the answer is here, but there were many families who were frustrated like ours because dinner was so late. I guess there are two ideas here: One being that it would be great if some adults without children or with older children thought about doing the late seating, and two, if Disney could have some kind of system that flags people with infants and young children and they could do some adjustments accordingly.

Tips - Of course we did leave tips, but we left what we felt were appropriate amounts based on each individual person. I can't stand the fakeness of the staff during the cruise in order to secure tips, and then the morning after the tips have been handed out, they've totally forgotten about you, or better yet, the head server gave me a dirty look, and then turned his back to whisper secretly to the other head server! The thing was, my DH and I couldn't find him the night before, so we actually had his tip in our pocket to give to him, but after his little display, the tip went back in my DH's pocket!

We are very anxious to go on a 7 day cruise. We felt that the 4 day was just perfect for the baby as it was her 1st cruise, plus we had just spent the week prior in Disney World. We greatly enjoyed this cruise as I stated, and can't wait to go on our next Disney cruise!

Thanks for reading, Tiger :)
