Hi, everyone! I have been more of a "lurker" but wanted to make a post about our trip.
My husband, son (8 yrs old) and I went. This was my dh first trip to Disney; my son's second trip; my 4th. This was all of our first time staying at Ft Wilderness. We stayed from April 20-26.
We camped in our Outback 27RSDS. This was our longest trip with the camper--longest in staying in the camper and longest distance traveled. I have to say, the camper out did itself....it pulled well and had no functional problems. I loved being able to go back to "my own home" after a long day in the parks.
The Fort........we stayed in the 1400 loop; our site was 1419. It was right on the canal. We loved the location....really close to everything. My dh and son used the bathhouse a lot....it was very clean. We ate at the restuarant once and it was excellant. Getting around the fort....well, before we went I repeatedly asked my dh if we should rent a golf cart, the answer was always no. We were there for 30 minutes and he wanted one! So, we ended up renting one from Tuesday until Saturday....and loved it! I would really recommend it. Wildlife......there is a lot of it! We saw deer, armadillos, turkeys, tons of rabbits and squirrels, ducks, fish, lizards. We even got a glimpse of an alligator......while we were kyacking! I was in the double kyack with my son.....needless to say, I instructed him to paddle faster!! The alligator seemed as anxious to get away from us and we were from him!
Eating....we opted for the dining plan. We never ever went hungry. By the last day, we had not used our snacks so we went around and grapped snacks to bring home with us. For our table service meals, we ate at Chef Mickey's (The Contemporary), Liberty Tree Tavern (Magic Kingdom), Germany (Epcot), Crystal Palace (Magic Kingdom), Teppanyaki Dining Room (Epcot) and Crocketts Tavern (Ft Wilderness). We kept a tally of how much we would have spent if we had paid out of pocket....each sit down meal was around $80.00, each counter service meal was around $35.00, each snack was between $3-$5 each. So, we felt the dining plan really was worth the money.
Crowds.....the first day we were there (Sunday) was HORRIBLE! I was very worried that it would be that way the entire week but the crowds thinned out some Tues-Thurs. I went 2 years ago the 3rd week of May and it was wonderful.....so I was surprised by the crowds. Come to find out, we were at the last of spring break...it was break for the East coast.
Weather.....we could not have asked for better weather! It never rained and stayed around 85-88 during the day. In the morning and evening, I was actually cool and wore a jacket.
Overall, we had a great time. We loved the fort and look forward to going back! Maybe in the fall next time! As soon as I get some pics off the camera, I will post them soon, too.
