I’ll be doing a more detailed trip report later, but I’ve seen people do “good, bad and ugly” here before, so I thought I’d give just a few highlights:
--Good--
DAS – I have kidney disease, which requires regular bathroom breaks AND I was by myself with no one to hold lines. I quickly realized with the crowds this would be hard, and remembered the DAS from reading about it here. It was a real godsend, allowing me to maximize my time in the parks in ways I couldn’t have otherwise.
Peter Pan – I had not even intended to ride, but with the DAS I was able to, and now I think it’s my favorite ride. I know it’s short, but it’s so beautifully done. I rode it three times throughout my trip.
Blue Bayou – My birthday lunch here was fabulous! I got a waterside table and yes, the ambiance was great. But so was the food! I had filet mignon, Blue Bayou potatoes and green beans, with a delicious birthday Mickey ganache for dessert. Even the Louisiana Lemonade was tasty! Highly recommend.
Goofy’s Kitchen breakfast - I almost cancelled this, being solo and hearing not so great reviews, but I’m SO glad I didn’t. Everyone was very attentive and made me feel welcome even though I was by myself. I saw all five characters (Goofy, Pluto, Dale, Chip and Minnie) and the interaction was great. When they found out I was alone, Minnie grabbed another guest to take a picture of us, and Chip insisted on a selfie!
Dole Whip Float - I didn’t expect it to, but this definitely lived up to the hype. Delicious.
Radiator Springs Racers - A combo dark ride and “roller coaster”, this may be the best theme park ride I’ve ever done. I rode single rider and my car won both times.
Shows - I saw Aladdin, Tangled at the Royal Theater and Magical Map. All three were really well done and I enjoyed them all.
--Not So Good--
The heat - Holy cow, it was hot, even for late October. I used the advice here and took a break every afternoon between 2-5. That helped.
Matterhorn - This is just as jerky as everyone says. I’m also tall, so I had to sit cross-legged and ended up covered in bruises.
MHP - I LIKED this, and I got a ton of candy. But truthfully, I don't think it's my "thing" since I'm not into characters or parades. And the crowds! Really bad. Coupled with the fact I wasn't feeling well and I left early. Did get lots of treats, though.
--Ugly--
Carthay Circle - This was not only the worst experience of my trip, it was possibly one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had as a single person. I was seated at a four top which was not only awkward, it meant the waitress was getting a smaller tip, since there were parties of four waiting.
After I ordered a drink and a salad, I was left alone with no drink, water, or bread for over half an hour; finally had to track down a waitress for water. Not sure what was going on, I left for the bathroom, only to come back to find they had CLEARED MY TABLE. I’ve never had that happen anywhere. When I asked they said they "thought I left" (I'd ordered and was gone less than five minutes). No apology. My salad came but no utensils or napkins.
I complained to the manager who said I was being rude and I needed to eat my salad. Even my neighbors let out an audible sigh of anger, because I still didn’t have napkins or utensils (he fixed that). Then the waitress told me she was upset that I was upset. I should have just left, but I was hungry and tired and instead I burst into tears. Thankfully, they were nice after that (a teary guest is bad for business); I got free dessert and they even bought me some Minnie Ears as an apology. I accepted, and I promised them I would come back and give them another chance. But probably not as a single.
The food was okay (I had a pear salad, chicken ravioli and some kind of s'mores-like dessert), but probably not worth crying over.
