I just did a quick search to see what has been answered about Shades of Green so I hope I'm not repeating anything :). I noticed someone posted that the new wing has a double fold out bed. Actually, the couch is full length, but the bed is just a single. Just like the couch beds at the Contemporary, with a quick flip, instant bed. I like this style better than the love seat in the old wing. IMO, more comfortable for sleeping on, plus it doesn't fold out into the room so you keep your floor space even when bed is in use.

We stayed at the Contemporary last spring in the North wing and liked it. I think the new wing rooms at SOG are bigger and nicer. I like the way the shower and toliet are behind one door and the two sink w/mirror are behind another. There seems to be a bit more space between the beds and walking space. Closets are alittle smaller (than Contemporary's). Chest of drawers with TV on top reminded me very much of the set up at the CR, just different theme. Our balcony faced the golf course and we had peace and quiet our entire stay. Getting to our car was easy. We were on the 3rd floor and could usually find a parking spot on 3 in the garage, didn't have to use the elevator this way. Level 5 was the easiest to find a parking space on but your car would be uncovered (thus get hotter during the day). Level 5 of the garage has a perfect view of MK's fireworks.

There was a big laundry room on 3rd floor, I'm not sure if any other floor had one or not. It would be a pain to do laundry if it wasn't on your floor because the stairs right by the laundry room are for emergency use only (you can't get out onto other floors once in them, don't ask me how I know  ). $1.00 to wash and .75 cents to dry. You won't have to put any extra money into the dryers either, everything got bone dry in one cycle :).

There are outside stairs at the very far end of the new wing. It is quicker to take this "back way" to Evergreen's and the Mickey head pool than to walk all the way forward, through the lobby, and then back through the old wing to the pool area. If you are using a wheel chair or stroller, you must go all the way forward to use the elevator. By that time you may as well walk through the lobby and past the little shops just in case you see something you want to buy.

The walk to the bus stop seemed shorter from the new wing.

If kicking back by the pool and ordering food from Evergreen's is your thing (it is mine), I think the old wing would be the best choice. If easy access to your car in the garage is important to you, the new wing rocks. They were still offering valet parking for free even though the parking garage was open. I would use valet if staying in the old wing.

I had requested a room in the old wing before my arrival but they had nothing available when I checked in in the evening so I was placed in the new wing. I could have moved to the old wing the next day but by that time, we were liking the new room very much (plus I was lazy about moving). I like the new rooms better but like the location near the pools better. Kind of makes it "fair" no matter where you end up, lol. Hope this helps you know what to ask for. Not that you will get what you ask for anyway.........:). They will tell you that there is no difference between the wings, that all the rooms are the same just different colors. I think there are alot of differences and both have their pluses. Old rooms have the hanging light above the table and four chairs instead of just two. TV behind doors, which is a cute Inn type look. Half walls and a smaller couch. Good luck and happy planning.

:D Thank you for the info about SOG!!!

14 days, I am there!!

I have a questions regarding the coffee pots in the rooms.
What size are they? Do I need to bring filters, coffee, etc...??

Also, the bus to AK, do you know what time it starts in the morning?

Thanks,

Sharon

The coffee pot was a "4" cup that looked more like 2. Made of metal instead of glass, to cut down on breakage I'm guessing. I only used it to boil water for oatmeal so I don't know if they provide new coffee/filters everyday? Hopefully someone who knows will post.

Bus B goes to Animal Kingdom starting at 8am, there is one every half hour. This same bus drops off at 3 parks (AK, BB and MGM), AK is the first drop off so that should make the timing easier to guess.

I am an annual pass holder and my boyfriend is a disabled vet. We are thinking of going to Disney Dec. 10 -20th either staying at POP or SOG....I am thinking that that time of year POP will be about 52.00 a nite and dont really know price of SOG. This will be my 50th trip to wdw and his second. I have stayed at all the resorts at least once except SOG. Pop is my choice but dont want to discount SOG Would like to get some info....

Cindy, we have ressies at SOG for Dec. 10-19. We are paying $72/night. That is the least amount you can pay. They have a pay schedule based on your rank. Check out their website for that.

I have never stayed at POP, but DB and SIL have just returned and they didn't like it. I think the rooms are much smaller than SOG. Everyone will have their own opinion on POP v. SOG. I think it is like comparing a value to a moderate/deluxe.

Either way, you are sure to have a great vacation that time of year. You get to enjoy the decorations and smaller crowds! It's my favorite time of year no matter where we stay.

They will bring new coffee everyday if you use it. No need to bring any coffee supplies of your own.
I wish I knew about watching fireworks from the top floor of the garage.
We were also on the 3rd floor- but sometimes had trouble finding available parking.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Great info! We're so excited about our upcoming SOG stay! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Comparing SOG to the value resorts:

Keep in mind that SOG rooms (both wings) are 455 square feet where as the value rooms are only 260 square feet.

We went over to All Star Movies one night to check out "Andy's room" that I have heard so much about and eat at the food court. The kids' meals were 3.99 plus tax and you get to wait in line which took quite awhile, to get your food. Then you wait in a seperate line to pay for your food. We ate out by the pool and boy did it look crowded! Stuck a toe in the water and it felt cold whereas the SOG pools were wonderfully warm at night. We looked around at the huge icons and the kids did love Andy's room themed area. That short visit was enough for us though. I asked the kids if they ever wanted to stay there and they both said "no!" ( 4 and 7). Kids' meals at SOG are also 3.99 but no tax. You can get them to go from Evergreen's or eat there in a fun sports bar atmosphere ( video games to the side). You can order them from room service, add on service charge and tip. You can order them in the Garden restaurant, or get the kid's buffet for 6.99. Loads of ways to feed the kids for $4 and they are all more fun than the All Stars food court, IMO.

I really noticed the noise at the value resort. The laundry room is in a seperate outside building. I would pay the extra to stay at SOG for sure.

The harder question is to chose a moderate or SOG. SOG has the soap dispensers like the value resorts where as the mods have the mickey soaps and shampoos. No wake up mickey calls at SOG and no disney world channels either (you do have The disney channel though). We may just stay at POFQ next trip as it looked really cute/fun. Happy planning.

We are going in August and our rate is $95 a night no taxes, My husband too is 100% disabled Vet. Its listed under retired and things liek that in the rate chart. We booked almost a year ago so it may have increased since then?

:bounce: :Pinkbounc Thanks for all the info on SOG. I had a question about charging to your room. Do you know if you can charge the meals you eat at Garden Gallery and Evergreens back to your room? :wave2:

Yes, you can. Makes it all so easy :). You can also charge to your room Shades of Green merchandise from the one little shop. Only place I know of that you can't use your room charge is the AFES shop.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am so glad that they allow you to charge meals to your room. It makes it much easier.

nice report!!
i would stay at SOG in a heartbeat if we were eligible....
i stayed there years and years ago when it was the disney inn (before the gov. bought it).....it was so peaceful and the rooms were HUGE...
the only vet in our family is my father in law....i keep trying to convince him to do disney with us (so we could do SOG), but no go....he hates disney....of course, he's never even been to WDW....don't you just love people like that.....oh well.....

:earsgirl: All the info on SOG has been great, we are finally going to stay at SOG this time .... my friends have stayed there before renovations and said we were missing out on a great deal
:D
I have heard about buses to the park being a problem - I'll have a car but don't want to drive to parks
I'll be there July 4th week and I am doing a bright and very early excursion for those members of my group willing to take my early morning challenge
Question - Do the buses start early when MK opens early - I'm figuring for the 4th MK should open turnstiles around 6:30am ::MinnieMo
I have also heard that is is a short walk to TTC???

We also just returned today from SOG. The busses started at 7:30 for the 8:00 EMH parks. There were usually two busses back to back to take the EMH crowd. We found it more convenient to take the one to the TTC (Bus A) and catch WDW transportation than the one that went to Animal Kingdom/Blizzard Beach/MGM (except on EMH). There were too many stops and it took 45 minutes from the SOG to MGM. We never waited more than 15 minutes for Bus A to TTC. If you wanted to get there earlier, you could walk to the Poly and take the monorail.

Word of warning...biting flies and mosquitoes were fierce in morning and evening hours. I took bug spray at urging of a post I saw before we went. They weren't kidding! This was at the parks as well as the hotel.

We were in new building, great room, 5th floor, facing a golf course. (Also didn't know about the fireworks from the garage...oh well, next time! We did watch from the beach at the poly...wonderful view.) Everyone we met was very nice. We had bar soap and shampoo bottles in our bathroom. Soap dispensers at the sinks. The coffee supplies were replaced daily, but I much preferred the coffee from the snack area on the way to the bus.

Can't imagine staying anywhere else for the money.

Unless they've added one since they've reopened, no, there is no all you can drink cup. Sorry! :(

Glad you had a great time at SOG! We are not eligible to stay there now, however, we stayed there a LONG time ago when it was the "Golf Resort" and then the "Disney Inn"
(Dating Myself - )

We loved the atmosphere, size of rooms, dining, and the pool!

Thanks for the update. I'm going to SOG in November and I was wondering about couple of things: 1. do you have to pay for parking at the parks if you are staying at the SOG and 2. what time are the pools open until and are they heated?

Thanks for any help you can give.
