Just returned from a week's stay in a studio at HHI - an adult trip, just myself and DH. Our first trip there, and we loved it. Very relaxed compared to a trip to WDW. The weather was great (high 70's, low 80's), resort was somewhat filled (we didn't realize it was "Jersey Week"!).

We were in a handicapped-accessible room (1212) but didn't mind, we liked the walk-in shower especially. Our balcony faced two lovely live oak trees with the marsh/creek in the distance.

Our studio was immaculate. It did include a dvd player. No ceramic mugs or glasses - everything was styrofoam - but all paper and plastic goods were wrapped in saran wrap. We did have the dish soap and sponge as well.

I'll be glad to answer any questions you all might have.

How nice! HHI is too far off the beaten path for us from Ohio at this time. I hope that someday when we make the trek from Cape May NJ to Florida we can enjoy a stay there. I think I would love it.

Did you mostly eat your room? In the resort? or in the general area?

We will be there for the first time this Sat. and can't wait!! Was there any rehabs going on now?

Bobbiwoz, we ate breakfast in our room, lunch usually at the resort (okay burgers and hot dogs at both Tide me over and signals - and the fries at signals were great!) Dinners we ate out - explored some great restaurants!! Plenty to chose from.

Disney 1474 - no rehabs that I saw, some painting and sprucing up around the Mercantile/pool area. I heard someone say that the rooms had all been refreshed recently. Ours was very nice.

DisneyDuo - thanks for the info. I take my first HHI trip in May! :thumbsup2

Can you tell me where you ate for dinner and what you thought of each place (price, service, etc.)? We have not made any plans so far for dinner because we really don't know where to go :confused3

TIA! Ellen

Ellen, our favorite meal of the whole trip was at Tapas - a little hole in the wall place in a strip mall. The menu features very creative and small appetizers and entrees, the idea is that each person choses two or three to mix up the meal. I had a artichoke and mushroom "dip" that was so good I begged for more bread to soak up the juice. Then I had a shrimp, scallop dish in creamy lobster sauce - again, more bread, couldn't leave a drop behind! DH had equally yummy spring salad, beef tips, and applejack pork. Dessert was a chocolate mousse cake for DH and mango sorbet for me. Every bite was delicious! This was the most expensive meal (for the two of us, with drinks, coffee, etc., about $95) but well worth it!!!!!

Second favorite meal was Little Venice, across from the DVC resort in Shelter Cove. Very good italian meal, not typical Americanized food. One thing to note about this place is if you get there between 5 and 7 p.m., you get a 20% discount with a 15% gratuity added in. That meal (again with drinks and dessert) was $58.

Slightly disappointing meals were at Kingfisher and Scott's Fish Market in Shelter Cove and It's Greek to Me - for all three, the meat or fish was good, but the side dishes were very bland rice and veggies. Prices for Kingfisher and Greek (again for the two of us) were in the $40's. Scott's was about $80!

We also ate at Fuddruckers (burgers), Hilton Head Diner (good basic meal), Stacks (very good lox & bagels and banana crepes!). Plus off island one day at Katie O'Donald's Irish pub - great french dip roast beef sandwich!

We also both enjoyed the Lowcountry Shimp Boil at the DVC beach house. Lots of food, good variety. I thought the shimp and catfish were very tasty, DH enjoyed the pork. The key if you go to that is to go early! Officially it begins at 6, and that's when most people arrived. They then had to stand in line at the bar to pay, plus at the same time folks were ordering drinks. It gets rather backed up, and some folks got very angry about it! DH and I went over to the Beach House around 5:30, were greeted and shown to our table, paid, got our drink, and were first in line to eat when they took the covers off the buffet!

Hope this info helps. When you check in you get a restaurant guide so you can see what's around. Lots of good stuff to try!!! Enjoy!

Some other restaurants worth trying are Alexander's, Old Fort Pub, or Red Fish for a "nice" (i.e., $$) adult meal. Check to see if they have early bird specials.

Old Oyster Factory has never been a disappointment, for a more middle-of-the-road meal. We had always enjoyed Hudson's, but went there this weekend and really didn't like it very much. :sad1: Big Bamboo is a good family place.

We also found a new place this trip, Grumpy Grouper Grille. It's on Pope Avenue, near Coligny Plaza. Really enjoyed it; it's very small, though, so I imagine getting in there during busy times will not be easy.

And I'll be Simba's Mom here to recommend Signe's for breakfast. YUM!!

When you check into the resort, be sure to get a copy of the restaurant guide with the menus. We have found that to be one of our most valuable tools at Hilton Head!!

Thanks for the info. We will be sure to go to the LowCountry Boil early. Thanks. I have a question about your studio..did it have a toaster? Think I will bring our refillable mugs from WDW to use for coffee in the room. I would rather not use the styrofoam cups. I'm really excited about our first HHI trip.
Carla

Carla, yes there was a toaster and coffee maker, as well as very small fridge and microwave. We brought our own mugs too, made things easier.

Disneyaholic - we had Grumpy Grouper on our list (loved the name!) but didn't get to it. Glad to hear it was good. We tried to go to Signes one afternoon to pick up goodies for the next morning but it was already closed (I think it closes at 3). We didn't get back. Just not enough time in one week to try all the great places!

Flemdog - Hilton Head Island, the DVC resort on that island in South Carolina

For excellent sea food try the Sea Shack. The address is 6 Pope Ave, Executive Park Drive. It is a very small place so get there early but the food is wonderful and not fancy. The last time we were there one of the side dishes was sweet potato corn bread. Yum! I asked the waitress for the receipe and she gave me the chefs card to email for the info. The best part is you can go in shorts and tee shirt and feel right at home.
