Just back from FW cabins

Just returned from FW cabins and really enjoyed them. We've never stayed there til this trip and have stayed at many deluxes and moderates. These are in a whole category by themselves. The campground is wonderful and we lucked out with the weather.

My db and his family stayed in the cabin next to us and friends stayed a few cabins down so it was quite enjoyable having them all around us. The transportation was very convenient and good. We did rent a golf cart but I was impressed with how often the internal buses ran as well as the park buses. I think we waited on the MK boat longer than the buses.

The campground is beautiful and the CMs are great. The cabins have everything you need. These are truely a great value if you want a full kitchen and separate sleeping quarters. They were very quiet at night (no doors slamming or people yelling down the hallways). I wish we had more time, felt like I blinked and we were home already

The only think FW is missing is a snack bar of some sort. They have TEB which is great but we were starved at 3:30-4 (TEB is closed that time) the day we got there and the only thing we could do was cook (which we really didn't want to) or got to WL or CR's snack bars which is what we did.

jwfla422, I'm glad you enjoyed your trip! Can you tell me a little more about the sleeping quarters? Are there separate bedrooms, how many does it sleep, etc? Were the cabins clean? If you have any pictures, I'd love to see them. Thanks!

Friends of ours stayed at the cabins last November and we found them to be quite cozy.
They have one bedroom with a double bed and a set of bunk beds.
There is a Murphy bed in the living room.

The cabins have one bedroom in the back and there is a full sized bed and a set of bunk beds in this room, so the bedroom can sleep 4. It is a little tight in there but comfortable. There is an "open" small closet and a dresser with 4 drawers I believe. The bedroom did lack drawer space. To the left of the closet is a vanity where the dryer was attached the wall. The actual vanity was wasted space where they could have put a set of drawers.

The bunk beds were good for small children or non clustrophobic people. The top bunk is set very low, my petite 4 yr old dd could just about sit up on the bottom bunkbed. The room is pretty private from the rest of the cabin. My dm slept on the murphy bed in the living room. The murphy bed is a full sized bed as well and there is also a couch next to it which could actually sleep one (like a daybed size). So, even though the cabins are supposed to sleep 6, you can probably fit 7, but it would get crowded with more than 4 in my opinion. There is only 1 bathroom.

I looked on the window frames and they were dated 1997, so they are in very good condition and they are very clean.

There is daily maid service which was very good. I made breakfast for all of us the last day, it was nice to leave all the dishes in the sink, he he he.

Thanks for the great information and the links to pages with pictures. We've always wanted to stay at Fort Wilderness, but never heard much about the cabins. We'll definately try them on our next visit!

I have a few questions about the cabins...is there any space in the living room to put your stuff?? Drawers, closet, etc. for a person sleeping on the Murphy bed?

Are the bunk beds full legnth? (My 14 yr old brother has surpased my 5'8" and my 11 year old sister is close)

Is there any type of out door lighting for when you are comming home from the parks late at night? Are there street lamps nearby or a front porch light?

How long of a walk (average) to the bus stop?

Is there a way to arrange groceries ahead of time? Or can you ship net grocery to be there when you arrive?

My dm stayed in the living room and she was able to put all of her stuff in the cabinets on each side of the murphy bed. It actually ended up being more storage than what's available in the bedroom!

The bunk beds seemed full length, but as I mentioned the height on the lower bunk was very tight. If your dh or db sleeps on the bottom they will DEFINITELY have to "roll" out.

There are 2 or 3 porch type lights on the cabins so it is pretty bright outside at night.

Depending on where your cabin is located depends on the amount of time to the bus stop. We were at the beginning of a very large loop. Our walk was 2 minutes because we were literally right by the bus stop (we could see it from our porch). We were in loop 2600.

Grocery shopping can be tricky if you don't have a car or aren't bringing groceries ahead of time. There are certain items available at the stores on site at FW, of course they are a little pricey & limited. If you're coming from the airport by limo some of them will allow a grocery stop on the way to WDW.

I've been comparing offsite suites to FW cabins and was wondering if there are AP codes in the fall? I would love to plan a trip and use the AP's just one more time but it would have to be a big budget trip! Onsite would be ideal so we didn't need to rent a car.

In 2000, we stayed at the cabins. My DS and DBIL slept on the full bed, my 2 15 yr old nephews slept on the bunks, my 25 yr old nephew slept on the couch and I had the Murphey bed. It really wasn't that crowded. It worked out really nicely. We ate breakfast in the cabin and sometimes ate lunch there when we came in for an afternoon rest. We just fixed cereal, toast, etc and sandwiches--didn't really cook.

There is a store that has some snack type things there, but we made a grocery stop on the way in and never needed it! We enjoyed it a lot!

We give the thumbs-up to the cabins too. We stayed last spring and absolutely loved it. When I was a kid we camped at Ft. Wilderness every summer in our travel trailer. There WAS a snack bar. In the same building as Trail's End, one side used to be a walk-up snack bar. You could get hamburgers, sandwiches, chips and drinks and the place was open from lunchtime til late. When we were there last I noticed this area is used for buffet seating now.

Now if they would just re-open River Country!
