Just back from AKL!

My husband, 4 year old daughter and I just spent 4 nights at the AKL. We arrived on Wednesday by noon and left on Sunday at 3pm. We had a wonderful time.

Our check in person was amazing. The place was quite busy, but she kindly took her time, offered me an upgrade from pool view to savanna view for an extra $10/night (I took it!) and found us a room that was ready right then! Which was wonderful since so many others were "homeless" for several hours.

The pool was wonderful. The chairs were always filled with towels, but the pool itself did not feel crowded. My daughter loved the slide and would go down it over and over and over... (I did mention the "chair saving" to a lifeguard one day, and saw her go over and start moving towels and freeing up chairs - which was great. Chairs would be saved all day long, and never a guest would use them... but that is another story and not AKL's fault.)

The buses were amazing. We never waited more than 5 minutes (we night have been lucky - but this happened for 5 days!) and I loved the direct service to the parks. Almost always got a seat.

The CMs were helpful and nice. My daughter loved the story telling, cookie decorating and other activities they put on. The CMs were very sweet to my daughter - she even hugged our story teller!

We ate at Jiko, Boma and Mara. All very good. My daughter spent one evening at Simba's club and loved it and begged to stay longer and wanted to go back another day.

We saw lots of animals (we were on Zebra trail WAY down the hall!). However, we were there for almost 5 full days, so sometimes you could look out and there would be nothing, then 30 minutes later, there would be giraffes, zebras, wildebeasts(sic?) and those African long horn cattle things (don't remember the official name). I spent many a nap time watching the animals and enjoying a cold beverage. Well worth the extra $10/day!

It was hot and humid, but not as bad as I thought it would be. The parks were fairly crowded, but if you went early and did fast pass, you were fine. However, we never made it on test track because the fast passes would either be gone in the afternoon or would be several hours out. (we spent mornings at MK or AKL usually)

The rain was not bad at all. (I went one August where it rained every day for at least 3 hours per day!) It rained Saturday night - but we had Boma reservations, so it didn't bother us. And it rained Sunday afternoon about 3pm, but we were leaving Epcot then to head to the airport.

All in all, a great trip. And, I loved AKL. However, the Boardwalk/Epcot resort area is still my favorite (due to the walk to Epcot), but my husband preferred AKL because he liked the little touches like the story telling, cookie decorating, the restaurants, the animals etc. Good thing we can visit both and it gives us another reason to go back! :)

Any questions, fire away!

Hi,

Thanks for sharing!! Glad you had a wonderful time!!

Thanks for sharing with us ktbugsmom. We cannot wait to go back to AKL.

We also love the Boardwalk Villas and the Beach Club Villas (we are DVC members) and we couldn't get into them in December due to they are all booked up. We consider AKL as our 3rd home away from home. :hyper: :teeth:

Minybear,
I am also a DVC owner at BWV, but have spent half of our visits at BCV. One of these days I am going to buy a BCV re-sale so I can guarantee my SAB visits!

But, I was out of points for this year (big trip planned for January 2005) and was in need of a Disney fix, so I decided to try AKL. I am so glad we did. My husband is even talking about going back there for a quick trip so we can take his 10 year old DD... he knows she would love it as well. Yeah... maybe I get to plan another trip!:Pinkbounc

Glad your a DVC member also. What we are doing for our Dec AKL concierge trip we are using 2 nights on points and then paying 2 nights cash. Its really a bad way to use the points but it saves us lots of $$, but we are so thrilled we are going back to AKL. We would buy right now if they decide to have DVC into AKL.

Can you tell I am having a hard time getting back to work after my vacation? I am having WDW withdrawals, so I am reading the boards to ease into work! :)

My only problem with DVC is that I love it too much. :) Meaning, I don't want to stray too far from BWV or BCV... but, I am honestly very glad we tried AKL.

Next I am ready to venture out to the Polynesian. :) Rough move... (just kidding) I love that resort, but have not stayed there since I was a kid in the 1970s. Maybe my next "quick" trip, and since we just bought annual passes... maybe I can get a good rate for May 2005! (Man, my hubby is going to freak!)

Glad you enjoyed your trip! I am getting "homesick" reading your posts!

Thanks so much for the report. Now that we're DVC members we can't wait to try out ALL the different DVC homes and resorts! AKL is at the top of our resort list!! I can't imagine being able to look out my window or going out on my balcony to see animals like that!!

It really was a ton of fun. What my husband just suggested at lunch today is that we take a longer trip next time and spend a weekend at AKL and then do 5 days at BWV. That would be a wonderful combo for me!

BTW - I have converted him to the ways of Disney vacations! :teeth:

However, our January trip is already booked, so I will have to wait for another time to plan my combo trip.

My DD12 and I will be visiting AKL for the first time in October. You've enhanced my anticipation for the trip.

Thanks for the great report.

I had just heard some negative reports and wanted to let people know that the resort is truly a wonderful place.

And even though it seems far out, it is the best bus service I have experienced - and we have stayed at OKW, BWV, and BCV in the last 2 years.
