Just got home from our 3rd onsite trip at Portofino Bay resort Club level.. Had a Blast a few highlights:

The good:
The resort was just as beautiful as always. We arrived at 230pm and room not ready, but we made our express passes at the kiosk and hung out in the lounge till we got the call about 20 mins later that room was ready. We were in the villas room 2540 overlooking the Villas pool. Room was clean and linens looked brand new.
Club level offerings were less than in prior years, but in prior years the offreings were bordering on obscene almost. The quality was what we have seen the last 3 years.
BEACH Pool was lively and they had poolside bingo and games. My DD won 2 games over our stay and received a free smoothie.Adults got a free alcoholic beverage.Too cold for me to swim( highs were high 60's low 70's but it didn't stop most people, and pools are heated )
Diagon Alley was absolutely breathtaking and Gringotts was operating well and with all the effects working all 4 times we rode over the week.Best seats are in row 6.you get the most lift prior to the small coaster-drop.
The Opera singers at PBH at sunset were beautiful and it was a wonderful way to start and end our trip.
Waits weren't bad with the express pass..Examples of Standby lines at mid day for things like Despicable Me ( 60-90mins) Spiderman ( 45-60 mins), Forbidden Journey 50 mins, Gringotts ( 50 mins) ..We never waited in the express line, except for DM, which once we were in the pre-show, the ride went down for technical issues.
The bad:
Early entry was at the Studios on Sunday.,Monday, with no warning it switched to IOA and that led to confusion on the parts of the all the employees, including the park employees. The ONLY reason we knew of the switch was the boat captain told us.Even the signs outside the parks and boat docks had it WRONG..it led to a lot of chaos

Hogwarts express was a bit of a letdown. It was cute, glad we did it, but nothing phenomenal we need to do it again .We always get the Park to Park tickets, because we hop anyway, but if we didn't, I wouldn't pay extra for it to ride the HE.

There was NO BENEFIT to trying to get on the Hogwarts express to get over to Diagon alley for park opening (remember IOA had early entry this week ).The one day we did do it we got there well after the guests from the front of the park were already there. The other 2 mornings it was NOT operating due to technical difficulties.By the time we hoofed it there, Gringotts had long waits.

The amount of tourgroups this week were more than I have ever seen, and I am used to them..They walked in HUGE throngs, hard to avoid( normally I just go the other way, but this time there would be just as many in the other direction) and would walk 10 across and slam into you ( they wouldn't move). They also would inundate rides and restaurants and would have 40-65 people at a time .We waited 45 mins at Krusty Burger at 11am because they got slammed with several large tour groups that they had to seat altogether for some reason...

The amount of people walking while filming thru full-sized IPADS or cellphones and selfie sticks was staggering.i got smacked into by more selfie-sticks this week from people NOT paying attention.I also saw a woman filming with an IPAD trip ,and split her lip open on the pavement..

On the night we had booked Margaritaville, we got there only to be told they were closed for a Private Party that night.I never received this in an email or were notified when I booked it.

A few points of note:
Early entry is to be at IOA from the 19th thru the 29th .On 1/30-2/1 , it is at both parks and after that, they aren't sure what they will be doing. This is per both parks guest relations and the PBH concierge desk.

They ARE cracking down on items in pockets/waistpacks.They do not allow waistpacks or items in pockets on : Hulk,Rip Ride Rocket and now Dragon Challenge. On Both Forbidden Journey and Gringotts on separate days they wanted to see the clasp on my waistpack ( they must have a 3prong clasp). They sent several people with waistpacks with regular clasps, travel/running belts to the lockers. I wouldn't be surprised to see them ban them altogether..Even with this, people are still sneaking stuff on.. I was still almost hit by a pair of glasses that flew off Hulk that landed on the ground next to us..

King Kong is making HUGE progress.I got a great view from Pteranodon flyers..It looks HUGE and the front is starting to resemble the gates of Skull island..If it isn't going to be Kong, it is going to be something equally impressive.

Overall-We had a blast, but we wont do Jan again..the cooler temps are can be nice, but we prefer the heat of August/September..We couldn't do the water rides because it was just too cold. The tourgroups were also too much this time around.

I am glad you are remaining positive about your trip despite a few unplanned challenges. You are not alone in reporting both the increase in tour groups in January, plus the EE changes.

Since this was our 3rd visit and we rode some things /saw things we didn't see last time I thought I would do a mini-review
The Studios------
Blues Brothers-Still fun and same as last time.Worth it

Beetlejuice-Not a fan of the newest incarnation..Loved the old show..This felt like there were TOO many people on stage and the mash-up of songs felt schizophrenic.Phantasia was way off-key in her singing which was a shame since she overtook the singers that COULD sing. All you heard was her and off-key.The dancers were talented though

Terminator- This needs to GO away..The only impressive thing I liked when I saw it in 2012 was when the stunt actor comes out on stage on the motorcycle and that part was eliminated from the show ( at least when I saw it on Thurs afternoon)

Animal Actors-First time seeing it..Very very cute.Worth the time

ET- didn't open till 10am and when we tried to ride it on 2 separate days it was down for technical issues.Made me sad since it is a favorite

Disaster- Skipped it after breaking my fingers on it last summer.Even with all the tourgroups, there was never a wait

Horror Makeup show--First time we saw it in 2012 , we were not impressed and couldn't see what all the raves were about ( it was essentially ONE big video of the Wolfman movie). This time was FANTASTIC..So glad we tried it again.Te actors definitely make or break the show

Despicable Me-Very cute as always.Wait times were insane , we waited with express pass awhile since it went down for technical issues while we were waiting on express pass line

Shrek-Skipped it
Twister-DID do this one since it is slated to go bye bye..Same as always, it will be missed.Especially if they do ANOTHER motion-type simulator

Simpsons- I have vertigo and motion sickness but can usually ride with my prescription meds without issue..I must be getting old because I was so so sick.I almost was "that " person with the protein spill..it finished me for the day.I did ride it again and did slightly better. But I think my days on it may be done
Transformers--Not a fan.Not sure why...Spiderman is my favorite..

Men in Black-Fun as always..Health Tip-Be sure to wash hands right after ..I saw someone sneeze into their hands, then wipe it on gun control..Ick..Not a germaphobe ( I am a nurse), but in flu season, safe than sorry

Gringotts- Fantastic!!!!!!! It was working all 4 times we rode and all the effects were working..Only complaint...It could be longer and the logjam for the photos. It backs the line way way up

Character meet and greets-Still NOluck with Lucy..As some people may remember, she is my all time favorite..My first visit in 2012 I waited and waited for her to come out..Of course once I went to the bathroom, she did and I missed her :(
tried again this trip..No Lucy..Saw betty Boop multiple times, and also Doc Brown and Marty McFly.
Loved SpongeBob as usual..Didnt wait for any others since they got assaulted by large tour groups the minute they came out

IOA

Cat in the Hat--Cute as always, really wish it spinned like it used to

Caroseussal- Simple, cute
Seuss trolley, train ride--I feel bad for the little kids and the employees since they raised the height requirement..It is the first thing the little ones see and want to ride and cant .The employees at the entrance take a heaping of abuse
over it too.

One fish, two fish-Too cold for me to ride..DD rode it.Even in the cold 45 degree morning , they had the water effects on( usually they don't) , but I guess since the forecast was 77 degrees later on....

Poseidon Fury- Skipped it.wasnt impressed the first time in 2012 nor summer of 2013..This has SUCH Potential, the building is gorgeous.Show is just lame.I wish they would put a cool ride in there
Hogwarts Express( Both )--Cute, but not something I would wait for or even got out of my way to buy a Park to Park ticket for ( I alwys get them because we hop).Glad we did it, but nothing incredible. It seems to be down for technical issues a lot too..
Forbidden Journey- Fantastic as always. Not sure which I love more, this or Gringotts..First morning ride was down for technical issues , but came up quickly.Rode multiple times using Single rider..Which brings me to my next point, I understand people want that perfect family ride photo, But it is not MY fault they put me in your ride bench as a single rider. This family managed to make me feel like a piece of poop and were really nasty overall about it( they argued with the TM and then were making snide remarks about me /too me as we waited to board)
Flight of the Hippogriff- DDs favorite..She must have ridden 15 times..I did it once.Cute coaster

Dragon Challenge- Did both sides..Love it ..Wish they still dueled, and I wish I could have experienced it when it was Dueling Dragons in Merlins wood/Lost continent

Ollivanders- Skipped it..Both shows in both parks always had a line..IOA was longer, only because IT had early entry

Jurassic Park River Adventure- Didn't ride..it was too cold every morning we were there

Pteranodon Flyers- Rode several times with DD.This was the last year she will likely be short enough. Was great eye-view of the future Kong ride
Again ,would not want to be a TM at this ride entrance...More people yelling and carrying on at the employees ..I had several people ask if DD could get them on the ride..She did go with some kids that were slightly too tall..I wasn't comfortable about letting her ride with adults though

Dudley Do Rights- Way too cold

Popeyes And Blutos barges- Closed and too cold anyway

Spiderman --Love this..It is my favorite after Gringotts and Forbidden journey
Rode it multiple times with express and little to no wait..Standby was always 20-60 mins depending on time of day and how many tour groups slammed the lines.

Hulk-Love it ..Just too rough..Or I am getting to old..But I think the track needs a real good resurfacing

Stormforce acceletron--What can I say? teacups with a MArvel theme

Dr Doom--Nope..Skipped it..I couldn't get anyone to ride with me and I wont ride alone

Characters--
Saw with no wait--Grinch, Lorax and Cat in the Hat

Spiderman, Captain America and Hobgoblin..Storm and Rogue were MOBBED as were Cyclops and Wolverine

Dining

At Studios--
We did
Springfield/Krusty Burger--Was really annoyed with the fact that they made all of us wait ( non-tour group people) for 45 mins in a line before we even got near the food .They had 3 or 4 groups of 40-65 people that for some reason ALL HAD TO EAT AND SIT TOGETHER.This was at 11-1130 am when it opened. They handed everyone menus to help speed up the line, it did no good at all..people still got near the food and had NO idea what to order. That said, I really enjoyed my Krustyburger. So did DH and DD

Monsters Café--Decent food and a great atmosphere

IOA--

Thunder Falls Terrace- My absolute FAVORITE counter service place in all of Universal..

Citywalk-
Cowfish- Enjoyed it immensely.Food fantastic, alcoholic milkshakes to DIE for and we didn't wait for a table and had fast service.Must be improving( we read about slow /poor service)..They ARE now open for lunch as well

Margaritaville- Made ressies for it since they are always busy.Got there only to find it was CLOSED for a private party.I never received an email or call about this..I was NOT happy at all..
Resort--
Mama Dellas- Favorite place at Portofino Bay..Pricey, but good food

don't blame you for not returning in january again.
after last year in january for me, never again due to the tour groups.

sounds like you got a lot done on your vacation.
and you get to repeat the fun coming this october!

It will be NEW to me..Never done HHN..I am coming down solo..DH is not into it and DD is too young imho..I am excited..I am actually thinking of doing Hard rock or RPR since it is only me.I can ride whatever I want too..Looking forward to it

i always plan my longer stays around the hhn event......

if you hit the same time period i will be there, we can toast each other with a butterbeer......

i enjoy solo trips, you might like it too.
you get to make all the decisions and no one argues with you.....

I have toured solo to WDW and loved it..Cant wait to do Uni .I love my family with my whole being, but By the weeks end this trip, I was ready to dump em and join another family..LOL...the arguing, the complaining ...ugh....

I always smile when I read people enjoy the opera singing........it's one thing I can't listen to (apart from Jazz....I hate that too) so we avoid that like the plague..........lol......I blame being made to go to opera in Paris when I was at school........scarred me for life!!!

You did have a busy trip,my it it sounds so much fun, we love Thunder Falls terrace too and thought Poseidons Fury was nonsense.......time for a change with that. And we'll done doing Simpsons.......I know how bad that can be......I was that person  will never do it again.

But you got HHN to look forward to now.......our favorite thing to do when we're there ::yes::

Good observations :thumbsup2

Totally agree on Cowfish, btw - excellent. And there did seem to be an increase in crowds and btg's over last year. Our trip this year was just a few days different than last year's trip.

I was joking with the family that we need to rename 2015 as the "Year of the Selfie Stick"......

Thanks for the report, especially the restaurant reviews. Wish we had more or these.
