Just back- Food @ Concierge - IMHO...

Hi- Just returned from 10 days at Poly / AKL concierge (12/29/03); and just felt compelled to put in my 2 cents worth regarding the Food Offerings and eating your meals at the concierge lounges.

I have read in countless threads on DIS boards of people who stay concierge and justify the cost by eating all of their meals at the concierge lounge- some people tell of doing a "cost-analysis" and that they will almost "break even and can stay concierge too.... It's a topic that comes up fairly frequently. I noticed during our recent 10 day stay at WDW that there were quite a few families that were doing just this (at the Poly more so than AKL); and I wanted to add my humble opinion on the subject... (This has nothing to do with the other services that Concierge offers- which are wonderful if you use them (PS planning, etc.)....

With all of the wonderful restaurants at WDW- why would anyone want to eat almost the exact same meal every night?? (Okay- the main event changed- but otherwise it was veggies with ranch dip, fruit with caramel dip, cheese cubes and the "variable" (spring rolls and rice one night, sushi one night, chicken satay one night, BBQ pulled pork on buns) (This is at the Poly).

Plus, if you are spending the day at a park other than the MK, why would you want to come all the way back to yhe resort at 4:45 in order to get those crudites? Some families also got the added bonus of listening to their children whine about not getting anything they liked ("I don't want another peanut butter sandwich- this place never has anything I want!")(the other guests also got to listen to them whine). We saw all of these things at the Poly- where the guests started lining up at 4:45 pm for that night's appetizers (on a side note, they never run out of food- so if you show up at 6:45 pm- they still have the same stuff).

I think the worst example I saw was the family of 5 (Mom, Dad, 3 daughters- who showed up at the lounge at AKL one night at 7:30 - they came around the corner and the girls started crying because there was no food and they were starving! The Mom got them a milk and told them to sit down- that they could have the desserts for dinner at 8:00pm when they brought them out - honestly!!! (They have a food court downstairs for pete's sake- could you imagine making your kids starve because you missed the bus from Epcot or something like that!) .

Sort of sounds like I spent all my time in the lounge huh? Nope- we ate at Jiko, Boma, San Angel Inn, 50's prime time, Hoop Dee Doo, Biergarten, Trail's end, Le Cellier, PF Changs (off prop.), cinderella's table, and Vic and Als (kind of blurring at this point- think I'm still in a food coma) - but our son like to hang in front of the big screen TV for awhile to relax before we went back out after nap time, and one of us had to hang out with him (He's only just 4). (actually we did eat our last "meal" in the lounge- but that was because we were too stuffed from eating for 10 days straight!)

At any rate- This is just my opinion- and I'm sure that everyone's experiences vary tremendously depending on who else is sharing the lounge with you on your vacation-- but I'd just thought I'd point out a couple things to keep in mind if you were planning on eating all of your meals in the concierge lounges...
1- No choice in what you eat ( for instance; you better like lentils and hummus if you stay at AKL)
2- Very little variety (it's not like you have german one night and hamburgers the next---the AKL was fairly well spiced african flavored food (think Boma), and the Poly was Polynesian (spring rolls, chicken and beef satay, chow mein, sushi) (kids at AKL had nuggetts, PBJ at Poly).
3- Sort of inconvenient to plan your park touring around being at the resort between 5 and 7 pm for "dinner" .

Okay- that's the end of my rant- which isn't really a rant- because I personally don't care if you do go to the Poly and eat all of your meals in the lounge- because they will still have enough pineapple and caramel sauce left over for me!;) It's just that the folks I saw doing it, didn't look all that happy- and isn't that what a vacation is supposed to be?? Especially at wdw:) Thanks for listening and have a Happy New Year!! Jill

I agree I would not Plan on eatring at the lounge for dinner ex: running back from a park just to snack!!
But if you happen to be at the hotel at the evening snack time We would sometimes get too full to eat out that night!! Infact we ate some appetisers in the lounge then went to dinner and I barely ate dinner I was too full.

Thanks for this post. We will be at the Poly concierge in just over 3 weeks and I totally agree with you. I am planning full meals and PS's for almost every night and do not expect the lounge to be a replacement for any meal!! I think the desserts and cordials will be a nice touch for after dinner, since the parks will already be closed, but other than that I am only expecting to take advantage of the lounge food for a quick bit in the morning to get us up, moving, and give us some energy before we get to the parks - and will likely eat a snack once we get there. My family are big eaters and I am planning on using the lounge as a place to relax in not eat meals in.

Again, thanks for the post - and I won't be surprised when I see the pajama clad family taking trays full of food back to their rooms to "get their money's worth"!!

Welcome back!

I have to agree with everything you said. We where at the Poly last January and found the same thing. The kids whining, the parents yelling, the parents whining and we even heard one lady ask for a MENU! We chuckled under our breath. We used a bunch of there bananna's and drinks. My dad is a Diabetic and so some of the snacks where nice when we came back to the room, but really just Bananna's and drinks for us. Most of the people that do those kind of things actually do think that Concierge means MEALS! NOT! Thanks for putting it so well. Can't agree more with the fact that there are so many WONDERFUL Restaurants and you are on vacation ~ BE HAPPY.

Thanks,
Wendi

WARNING!!! Anyone going to be at the beach club concierge from teh 10-14th you may see and my DD pajama clad getting coffee and donuts!!!ol:teeth:
I will be the one in the tink pjs!!!! (Im not kidding!!)

Sounds too cute!! Maybe I should get a pair of cute PJ's to venture into the lounge with.

I understand exactly what you are saying Nasmith. It would be very hard for us to try and make it for evening service when it is "prime time" in the parks. That was the case when we were at the Poly conc. this summer. Park hours were later and we didn't make it to the evening service very much.

When we visit in the winter (mid-Jan/Feb.) the parks are closed much earlier and we would generally make it back to the lounge for apps and drinks. Then we would take off for Epcot (open til 9pm) or DTD and have quick service or a salad/app at a sit-down restaurant. This worked very well for us. We felt that we used the conc. service and it did save over a full sit-down meal. We felt it was worth it to us.

We are planning on staying at AKL concierge the week after next Thanksgiving. Here's what we plan on doing...

The days we don't have a big breakfast planned (Chef Mickey's, Sunrise Safari) we will grab something light in the lounge. My kids are completely satisfied with bagels, I like cereal and juice. Simple, fast breakfast fare. We plan on doing counter service for lunch and some dinners and if, IF, we are back during the evening snack time, we will eat there too, otherwise, we will hit up the desserts afterwards :p .

I really like the water, milk and juice offerings for drinks. I'm not a soda drinker so the water is great! The kids like the lemonade and M&Ms!

No, I agree, it would be hard to make a meal out of it, day in and day out (boring), but it really does make some nice appetizers. I LOVE lentils and hummus (being a vegetarian and all ;) ).

Karen

Lentils and hummus? I do hope there are some plainer food/snack offerings!

Karen- I love lentils and hummus too!! Just thought I'd warn you that they no longer have bottled water available- just water in a pitcher (not Tap water - yummy water). They still have lemonade, ice tea (unsweetened) and african smoothie (yum) available for you to pour yourself a glass (OJ, Pineapple, and Mango juices to pour in the AM). Also have sodas available as well as milk ( skim and regular (maybe lowfat, but I didn't look), chocolate milk, apple and grape juice, and perrier for the asking (not out, but ask concierge to get you one). They've switched suppliers (all of the concierge, apparently) - and no longer have plastic bottles of water (although they did give us the bag of 3 dasani upon departure for the trip home). Also- no M&Ms while we were there- gummy bears, animal crackers, and trail mix (dried fruit type) were out during the afternoon. You will have a wonderful time!! Jill

I agree with you guys. We will be having our very first Concierge experience in August and have no intention on using the lounge for our "real" meals. I do have a question, though. They let you fill up a glass , take a snack and go back to your room if it's late and you don't feel like hanging out, right? I have this odd vision of CM' s with tiki torches chasing me down the hallway with my golfish crackers and pineapple juice.

Maybe this is a totally different topic but I'm curious....
What are everyone's opinions on folks going to the lounges in their jammies?

I am a total Polynesian fan and we stay there more often than not but I'm sorry folks.... I dont want to see everyone in their jammies at breakfast time. Sorry and I will probably get flamed for this one.

Curious to hear a different perspective.

I agree with you Tinky! The last thing I want to see is someone roaming around in their pjs and I don't care how cute they look in them! LOL! It seems that staying concierge makes some folks think it is okay to show up in public in less then appropriate attire. Would these same people show up at Captain Cooks in their pjs to get a cup of coffee? Same thing. I did happen to see some scruff come into Captain Cooks last year in a robe that was untied to the waist with boxer type bottoms on. He reminded me of that crummy looking detective Columbo. Not only was he the last thing I wanted to look at first thing in the morning but he also has a mug from a different resort. He made such a fuss butting in front of everyone in line for coffee that a CM came over to him and told him he wasn't allowed to use that mug. LOL! He was not happy! He yelled something and then walked out. I do think the folks on this thread are kidding about showing up in pajamas in a public place. At least I HOPE so! LOL!

I still just don't get it. I honestly don't see what the attraction is for staying concierge. Maybe if you had very young children it might make it a bit easier as far as having snacks available to you at most times, but otherwise, I don't understand what people are paying for. And no, it's not just a matter of money, but they DO charge you more to stay concierge, I just don't think that what they offer you (snacks, help with PSs, etc) is worth any more than MAYBE $20 a night over a non-concierge room. It's not as if concierge gets you a better room, because you still have to decide on and pay for a lagoon view, if that's what you want. We're not cheap (we HAPPILY paid $425 a night for a lagoon view at the GF), we don't do "budget" vacations, and if I honestly thought that concierge got me something more than just a handful of snacks, help with PSs (which I don't need) and bragging rights ("I stayed at the GF,Polynesian,YC, etc CONCIERGE!"), then I'd surely give it a try.

Please don't flame me, all you concierge fans!! I honestly just do not see the attraction of concierge, no matter how hard I try. We're not opposed to concierge, I just cannot see any REAL benefits!!

I agree with you nasmith. Concierge food offerings were never intended to be meals. I don't know why people would want to eat there three or four times a day. I always perceived those food items to be snacks. Basically something light to eat with alcohol or a coffee.

We would never be able to "justify" the expense of concierge room on solely the food alone- if we were going on a normal trip! Normal meaning we eat lots of character breakfasts, NEVER would want to come back midday for a snack, and enjoy eating some character dinners, trying out different restaurants (some for the first time- some not), etc. We'd rarely even walk into that lounge! LOL

But on our next trip- we are planning just 2 nights at GF and I think we're going to go concierge. We aren't doing it for the lounge snacks alone- but we WILL be able to take better use of them! Since we will be spending only one of those days at MK and the rest of the time we plan on spending at GF -enjoying the amenities (children's tea, pirate cruise, childrens club while we have dinner at V&C's if we can manage getting a table there LOL, dinner with Cinderella, couple spa visits for me and water activities for DH- more time spent in the pool- with slide!!!!- than we usually do at other resorts- things like that!) Therefore we're going to be around the resort a lot more than our "usual" visits and I'm sure it will be nice to be able to have a snack or drink here or there during the day and desserts at night.

From what I've been reading lately- the foods/snacks available in the concierge, especially GF (not sure if that differs with Poly/AKL/etc.) -there really isn't enough food or the types of foods that you could make it into a MEAL. I don't understand why people would consider it that... just being cheap? It's hard to imagine people paying concierge room prices yet being that cheap. Makes no sense to me. Can save a LOT more than the food costs to stay in a much cheaper non-concierge room!

Tinky, add me to the lineup for flaming because I totally agree with you. I don't go on vacation to see others roaming around in their pjs! Flame away!!!

On the other hand, I am also a mom who carries a tray in the am with juice, tea, coffee and bagels for those in my family who ARE still in pjs in the room. We also have breakfast at Kona a couple of times per trip as well as room service which also serves that great Tonga Toast.

We very much enjoy the 5-7pm service. It has always been our habit to return to the resort in the afternoon to relax, read, swim and for my guys sometimes golf. We then go to a nice dinner at one of the resorts or Epcot. When we've stayed concierge...which is much less frequently than not...I love having a glass of wine, some veggies and cheese and the offering of the day before we head to dinner. It has never replaced dinner for us.

The lineup at 4:45 I find interesting. I've never gone to the lounge at that time but we often go shortly after 5 as our PSs for dinner are always on the early side and we've never encountered that kind of line! But maybe it had to do with the time of the year.

From staying Poly Concierge last May for the first time, I can say that on that trip it was WELL worth it. Since we all went through a stomach bug not having to leave the building for food was a HUGE helper. The healthy person (somehow there was always one) went up and got a tray of whatever they thought the rest could stomach and a few beverages and brought them back to the room. I guess they could have gone to Capt. Cooks but it was nicer/easier to not have to (don't know why just was).

SeaSpray,

I was surprised to find that my favorite part of staying concierge was that I wasn't stuck in a small room with my family for 9 days. I get up and ready for the parks very early. I had somewhere to go while my family slept. I met some fantastic people in the
AKL and Poly Lounges. I truly believe this added to the enjoyment of my vacation. We weren't on top of each other all of the time. We had space!

After 7 days eating Polynesian food I was ready for a change. We also made one PS everyday either for lunch or dinner.

Lori

During our trip, I only saw one 25-ish woman in jammies (snowman jammies) and a few young children(the preschool/toddler crowd)---and it was crowded- so it was definitely the oddity. I would have felt out of place in jammies, that's for sure. They do provide robes for you if you so desire. Shoes (or sandals or slippers (not socks)) are a must due to health code restrictions however.

We stayed concierge because we did spend alot of time at the resort (we are passholders and would hit the parks for a couple hours in the morning, lunch at 11:00am, then spend the bulk of the day at the resort resting/swimming or just relaxing (My DS with that big screen TV); then off to dinner about 6pm - maybe fireworks afterward. But we would not have if we were spending most of the day at the parks. This trip was about relaxing - not space mountain, etc. It was lovely.

BCV23- they actually have trays now, for you to bring coffee and bagels back to your family in the room (or whatever):D . As for the lineup- there were 2 days that I wanted to try something that Chef Dick had prepared (sushi for one, and I can't remember the other)- and the line for the food was too long until at least 5:30 that I didn't bother (the trip was about relaxing, not standing in lines for a single piece of sushi) because we had to leave for our PS. People were standing around in the lounge waiting for a table to become available (it was like a bad cafeteria scene). (Have I mentioned that I will never go at Christmas again (we've always gone early Dec. before)). We had a marvelous time anyway! Jill
