Just back... be careful recommending LeCellier, too highly!

We visited WDW the week before Christmas and I had made all of the ADR's based on input from other family members. No one other than my immediate family had ever tried Le Cellier, and I just RAVED about it and said it was a MUST DO! Well, I even secured 3 different ADR's to make sure we were able to get in either for lunch or dinner... Thus begins our saga!

Our wait to be seated was very reasonable, and like everyone else we got to sit and watch the many people without ADR's who were turned away. They even placed a podium out in front of the restaurant to try and curb the crowd that was coming into the Lobby of the restaurant. Apparently, Le Cellier is sold out through the New Year! GARSH!

When our name was called we were all happy to see that we were seated together (party of 10) along one wall in the New Brunswick section of the restaurant. (Our ADR stated we would be at 3 separate tables...which we technically were. We were just side by side!) Half of us had bench seating while the other half had chairs. Our waiter was an extremely nice and personable young man... but waaayyy too inexperienced to be a waiter. He offered us nothing that we didn't have to pry out of him. Usually you get a nice introduction as to what province you are being seated in. Another nice touch is the explanation of the story behind the different soft breadsticks that are served. (I won't spoil it for you newbies! But be sure to ask your CM for the story it is nice!) He took our drink order and that was the last we saw of him for about 20 minutes. When the drinks came, he didn't bring all of them. It was really sad... and a foretelling of more agony to come. We even had to ask for our bread and butter; which he did not bring enough of so we ran out during the first 5 minutes! (As a side note our favorite was a tie between the Multi-grain and the Pretzel soft bread sticks! The sour dough was good, but definitely ranked 3rd! This was served with REAL butter wedges, YUM!)

For a starter, I ordered the Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup - smoked bacon and Moosehead beer $4.99.This is an awesome soup and simply delicious. Others in our group wished later they had also ordered this, but thought it would be too much salt for their diet.

For my main dish, I ordered an entree salad: Mixed Field Greens - crumbled blue cheese, fried sweet potatoes, with pecan-shallot vinaigrette $6.99; add grilled chicken breast $2.99. It was not too complicated and I knew it to be delicious. I also ordered a nice Riesling to accompany my choices.

My DD17 and her 16 yr old cousin both ordered the Calgary Maple Barbecue Chicken Sandwich topped with Canadian bacon and Black Diamond cheddar cheese served with a creamy celery root slaw $11.99 and were both very happy with this. As an appetizer, my hungry nephew added: Grilled Beef Tenderloin Kebab - with caramelized onion tart $10.99 This was pronounced "amazing" by both teens!

Keeping with tradition, my DD11 who loves Chicken Caesar salad more than Fruit Loops.. ordered her "usual": Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad - baby romaine lettuce, marinated grilled chicken breast, and creamy Caesar dressing $10.99

My DH was in the mood for a burger and thus ordered: Grilled Steak Burger - topped with your choice of Cheddar, Gruyere or Blue Cheese $9.99 *Which was served with Cheddar and Applewood smoked bacon for $1.00 more.

My Mother enjoyed her entree salad as well, settling on the Beef Tenderloin Salad - beef tenderloin tips, mixed greens, and pine nuts, finished with raspberry vinaigrette $15.99

Now we come to the problem part of the meal... both my Dad and my BIL ordered the Sliced Prime Rib "French Dip" Sandwich - French onion roll, caramelized onions, Canadian cheddar, and horseradish cream spread and beef jus $14.99. The server inquired how they would like it cooked and I believe they both requested Medium Rare. Well, when it was served it was medium well and sliced thin and looked like chipped beef, not prime rib... uh, oh. This was not good since at the start they were out of the Prince Edward Island Mussels with smoked bacon, corn, peppers, and white wine butter $9.99. The server recommended the "Candied Salmon" which I had never seen on the menu before, and is NOT cooked.... it is RAW salmon. Well, this ended up making my father sick! YIKES! To compound the situation, my Sister who has traveled coast to coast and has eaten in many fine restaurants from New York to LA, ordered another dish I had never noticed on the menu... a Portobello mushroom sandwich, which advertised that it was sprinkled on top with Goat cheese. She requested that the goat cheese be omitted since she cannot abide the taste. When it was served, I saw no goat cheese, but she insisted she could taste it in the dish and was so upset she lost her appetite and did not wish to have it remade. Hanging my head at this point going... OK, why are those that have eaten here before having a wonderful meal, but the "newbies" are having such a rotten experience? I know... it is because I sang the praises of this restaurant too loudly and I am being punished for my arrogance! :bitelip:

At this point, it has become apparent that this meal is not going to get any better and I excuse myself to go in search of the manager. Although most of our group has enjoyed the meal, it is tempered by the length of time we have been rooted at our table... over 1.5 hours. After explaining my concerns with the meal, and the service, I request to have the Portobello sandwich removed from our tab, as well as the automatic 18% gratuity. I assured the manager how much we personally liked our waiter, he had really been so inefficent and unknowledgeable it had affected our overall dining experience. Perhaps he just needed more training? She agreed that was fair and we were satisfied. I know we tipped at least 15% of our bill, since I was happy with my family's food. But the service was indeed too slow, and a 2 hour meal was unreasonable for lunch. (*I should also add we had a 4 yr old in a wheelchair who we finally had to wheel out of the restaurant due to the time factor...)

So will I go back? YOU BETCHA! Will I HIGHLY recommend that others do so? NEVER! ;)

Oh my! My 10yo would have gone into meltdown mode. We love Le Cellier, but this would have tried my patience. Glad the manager made it right for ya :flower:

We also ate at LeCellier on 12/23 for dinner. Our waiter told us nothing just took our order. I also noticed after we got home and I was looking at the menues on allears that the menu we received at the restaurant (dining plan with candelight proc. ticket) was not the same. the 20 oz ribeye was not on the menu we had along with several other items the appitizers were not all listed--main courses were limited and the cheesecake was not listed on our menu at the restaurant. Did anyone else notice this?

After having some great meals at Le Cellier we had a terrible one on our last trip. From your description it sounds like we had the same server. It will be a while for us to return.

Menus change frequently so allears might not have the most update menu.

I too have raved about all the reviews on Le Cellier and have reservations for five (one is a four year old, ugh!) on Jan 23......I hope we do not have a repeat of your story with the ineffective waiter and limited menu... :earsgirl:

Allison, I usually frequent this restaurant every visit, so have sampled it for lunch and dinner at least 6 times this past year. I have only noticed subtle changes, not counting seasonal menu changes. I have noticed in the past during really busy times that the Dessert Sampler has been pulled from the menu. It is a REALLY good deal for only $11.99.

That was another bummer! I was looking forward to dessert and coffee.. but our meal was overlong and the magic was gone so we needed to go. Unfortuntely, that night both my Father and Nephew got sick to their stomach, and were up half the night. I think they will associate that feeling forevermore with Le Cellier!

mmiller! Don't get too worried! I have had too many good experiences here. If you are at all concerned you might quietly mention at the podium that you would prefer a really GOOD server if possible! Quite honestly? For the size of our party, there was NO WAY they should have ever assigned that many people to one waiter. Two would have been the minimum, IMO. But, knowing he was supposed to get at least 18%, perhaps he defended the right to serve us solo so he would not have to split the gratuity? (Only guessing here....)

I asked our waitress for advice between two menu items and she unamimously told me to go with the blue crab sandwich and I'd be very pleased. I did and was not. I was very hungry and there was more bread than crab and there was more outer breading than crab meat. I knew I took a gamble, but I'm still trying to figure out why she recommended it with such little substance and taste compared to the bigger bolder salad. Guess I will not ask next time!!!

I was going to order the Dessert Sampler, as it was listed on the menu for Desserts and the (horrible) waiter we had, said that I couldn't order the Dessert Sampler, in his words it was "Um Sir, only 2 people order Dessert Sampler." Some foreign man that you could understand. So, Disbug.. did you order the Dessert Sampler by yourself?

zmirby! I have definitely ordered the Dessert sampler by myself, but could NOT finish it by myself, lol! But, the portions are smaller than the normal size of each individual dessert. In the past, I have ordered it as part of the Vacation Kingdom Lunch vouchers. For $31 you received an appetizer, drink, entree, and dessert. So, I would split the meal with someone else. If I was dining solo, I would split off the raspberry sorbet to a separate plate for me (my favorite)... and then offer a couple who might be sitting next to me the chocolate club cake and maple creme brulee.

Personally, I think it is fine and can easily be finished by one person if you have only come in for coffee and dessert. Otherwise, I would say, for a woman or a light eater... it would be tough! :teeth:

kjs! IKWYM! :goodvibes When someone recommends a dish to me, I go one step further and ask them to describe why that would be their choice... I try to get them to give me as much detail as possible, before going with their suggestion or not. I felt our server did not give my Dad NEARLY enough info on the CANDIED SALMON (whuh??). If he'd known it was raw, he'd have never ordered it. Plus how did our server go from a MUSSELs appetizer which is what he wanted, to the giant leap that he would like something so obviously "not mainstream"? My guess, is that the candied salmon was backing up in the kitchen! :rolleyes1

In the future? Don't be afraid to send it back if the dish is really unpalatable. After all, it does them no good if we don't want to come back.... Also, as an aside? I would definitely let mgmt know you DID not enjoy hunting for the crab in your "crab" sandwich! ;)

Disbug,
I have no clue why this waiter said that? Is it because we had the dining package with the Candlight Processional added on? I did not know until we sit down and until we got home later in the week that the menu we had was a "special menu" just for CP dining package people.
Hmmm... I think that is rather chintzy, if that is the case. Something like that should be stated upfront and not magically appear "by messenger" via your waiter. The only thing I have seen as far as a special notation about the CP packages, was that LOBSTER was not available as an entree at the Mitsukoshi Teppanyaki.

After an experience at Boma which was really disappointing not due to the meal but due to the expectations, I really try to temper my reviews here. Le Cellier is a very good steak house for the price - but I've been disappointed when I've wandered off the core of their menu (i.e. the steak), and would be disappointed if I expected a truly excellent steak (its a good steak, it isn't a great steak since they stopped importing Canadian beef due to mad cow). It sounds like the folks who stuck to the core part of the menu (steak and the soup) were content.

ITA! Crisi... Well said, and basically was the same thought in the back of my mind. When I heard my Dad being talked into the Candied Salmon, I didn't want to SHOUT "NOOOOO" but, I sure was thinkin' it!

I had a great meal there with a wonderful server in August.I have ADR"S their Thursday.I'll make sure to post a review

Thanks, Jenny! I know I ate there in November and it was excellent as always! I guess in the future, I will try to curb my enthusiasm when I recommend a favorite restaurant! I feel I jinxed the experience by having had SO MANY good meals there! Hopefully the rest of my family will give it another go the next time they visit!

I will look for your review!

getting me nervous! Made ADR's there for Dh & my quick weekend trip in two weeks- he doesn't like planning meals and was disconcerted that I had done so. I thought he'd really like it (he's Canadien born but adopted in the US-we visit Canada every couple of years to see his birth families in toronto and NB)
and loved the idea of getting some historical Candien history. I hope we're not disappointed.

We too had a similar experience at Le Cellier this summer. The food was just fine, but the service was horrific. Waited forever for coffee, the check, the waiter to even acknowledge us...it wasn't a good thing. And it was so cold in there, we had to walk outside every 20 minutes to be able to stand it. Granted it was 100 degrees outside, but that felt better than the frigid 40 degrees in the restaurant. We were very disappointed as Le Cellier had always been a favorite. We probably won't be rushing to go back again anytime soon. If ever.

Sad...

I have recently found that the service at many of Disney restaurants is slipping. Very recently - and it saddens me to say that the non-Disney restaurants like Blue Zoo, Kimonos, Fresh, Palio - they are all leaps in bounds better than many of the Disney establishments. This past trip over Thanksgiving we had bad service experiences at Citricos, Kona Cafe, and Boatwrights. I wonder what the heck is going on????????
