Just wanted to report back that WDW is still a wonderful place to visit! :thumbsup2 This trip was fantastic! Lower than expected crowds, very few down rides, excellent food, and surprisingly nice weather.

Our previous 5 trips have all been the last week of September with free dining, so that is our reference point. This was our first trip in early August, and we were pretty nervous about the crowds and weather.

Crowds:

Not sure what to say... crowds were lower than expected. They felt like our typical September crowds or maybe just a tad higher, but not by much. Touring plans had predicted mostly 7’s to 10’s, but our actual crowd levels were 2’s to 5’s! This is what we’re used to in September. Not sure what happened, but we weren’t complaining. Rope drop was still critical if you wanted to ride headliners that you couldn’t get FP+’s for though. Line waits were very manageable overall.

Weather:

We were blessed with awesome weather. It rained most afternoons somewhere in the area, or at least there were typically rain clouds, but in our 10 days in the parks we only had to get out our umbrellas once for about 15 minutes! We zigged while the rain zagged I guess. Plus, the temps were in the mid to high 80’s instead of typical low 90’s. Weather for this trip was better than some of our September trips.

Dining:

We did not purchase a dining plan, but rather paid out of pocket. Food was excellent, with the TS locations much less crowded than we’re used to. Now that we’ve visited when free dining isn’t offered, we noticed that free dining in September really does drive up crowds in the restaurants. We noticed them much more accessible and less crowded this trip by a significant margin.

Cape May’s continues to be a favorite, and we ate there twice. It didn’t disappoint. Another that we love, but can get mixed reviews here, is Coral Reef. I have to say that the Mahi Mahi, rainbow trout, and strip steak were all excellent this trip, a real highlight. Ohana was good as usual, but we always feel like we’re wasting so much food there. There is always a lot of noodles, wings, pot stickers, and salad left after the meal, and I feel like I’m getting stuffed by those items before the meats and shrimp even arrive.

Cast Members:

Cast members overall were very good. Nothing really stood out as exceptional, but they were overall helpful. I do feel that there has been a general slide over the last 6 years though. Cast members seem to be a little more casual with park visitors, rather than “being on stage” for them. I noticed more work talk between CM’s while visitors were standing right there overhearing. One negative that stood out was a fairly obnoxious CM on the last ride of Soarin one of our nights. We got in line right at 9pm and ended up being the very last ride in that theater. The CM CRANKED up the mic, and gave instructions in a very accentuated, sarcastic way. It was really weird. It was meant to be funny, but ended up mostly being awkward for everyone.

New rides and attractions:

Mostly loved the new Soarin film. Beautiful scenes, good locations, clear film, and a good sense of flight. I don’t really appreciate the surprise, startling transitions between so many of the clips though. The golf ball in the old film was great since it only happened once, but this once overdoes it IMO. Also, if you are not in the middle section (section B), some of the scenery can look very skewed. This is due to the shape of the screen. The top of the Eifel tower curves like crazy, as do other things in the film. Very noticeable. We asked to be seated in the middle section (and we prefer top row) for our subsequent rides. That fixed the issue.

Frozen ever after was very nice. Glad we had FP’s for it, because I wouldn’t have wanted to wait that long on standby, but I loved how immersive the scenes were and the details throughout the ride. Very well done overall. Please don’t flame be, but I felt it was a monumental improvement over the old Maelstrom which I didn’t feel was even FP worthy.

Star Wars. I can really see how HS is going to be a very fun park to visit with all the Star Wars stuff being added. The storm trooper march was really fun to watch, and meeting Kylo Ren was great. The Galactic Spectacular (or whatever it’s called) was an awesome new addition. We sat in front of the stage about an hour before the show and had a great view once the show started. Very fun, exciting show. Star Wars is going to be a huge plus for HS for quite some time to come.

The safari ride at AK at dusk/dark was a bust. Could hardly see anything. The only saving grace was that we finally saw the lions up and walking around. That was cool.

While not exactly new, the new HUB is great. We found a spot to sit about an hour before Wishes and had our best viewing ever. I like that they took away the FP+ sections like they had on our previous trip. The open seating is much preferred.

Resort

Port Orleans Riverside. We love POR. Bus service at POR was the best we’ve ever had. They seemed to arrive much more often than previous stays there. We loved our room in building 38 (garden view). I requested that building on purpose, and it was our best yet, with a very nice setting. Only a 4 minute walk to the food court, and close to the north bus depot. Food court: The make your own pasta dish is fantastic for only $12. It easily feeds two people and tastes great. We walked over to the POFQ pool a couple of nights, and that was a fun to do as we hadn’t swam there before.

Overall

It’s sucky:sad1::sad1: that our visit is over, but we were getting pretty tired by our 10th park day. :faint: However, I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. :goodvibes:goodvibes:goodvibes Feel free to ask any questions, and I’ll try to answer.

So glad that you had a good time. I was in there the past 5 days, and I agree that the crowds weren't bad at all! I loved Soarin but didn't like the transitions either. The first time I rode it I never smelled anything, but the second time I did. Arriving at rope drop is the way to go! I was killing time this morning riding the monorail, and I was so surprised at the crowds arriving at the Magic Kingdom between 9&11. I'm sad to be going home, but look forward to my next trip!

Thanks for such a detailed report! We're heading to the world tomorrow, and one of our resorts will be PORS:-) Can't wait!
Can you tell me your experience when stopping to pick up at the South Depot? We have a preferred room booked, so I know we are near the South Depot (but I've heard it's the last pick up). Did people at that bus stop usually have to stand? I'm only asking as my dad will be coming with us and we might walk over to the West depot to improve our chances (first pick up I think). He can stand if he has to, but just trying to improve my chances of getting him a seat.
Glad to hear you had a great trip!

We were there the 4th - 11th and at POR also! We were in building 26 (although we were in building 38 on our last trip) and felt it was a good location as well. I can relate to much of your post, especially what you said about the CMs (overall helpful, but nothing exceptional, and more casual than in the past). One exception is that we really enjoyed the nighttime safari, but it seems it has received mixed reviews and may depend on exactly what time you go.

Thanks for sharing, and glad you enjoyed your trip! :-)

We left on your arrival day. I had to chime in that Soarin CM's were really bored, or something. When they gave our briefing the young lady gave it in a very poor southern accent. Really obvious that it was contrived. Then afterwords I overheard them discussing what to do for the next briefing so they are obviously entertaining themselves.

We were there the 2nd-12th and I agree with most of what you said. We did run into some really amazing CM but we did notice a lot of CM have full conversations with each other while ignoring guests. This wasn't something we had seen before. DH and I talked about how cool the weather was in comparison to our other trips, it was fantastic. Sounds like you had a wonderful time.

I would say that 9 times out of 10 the seats were full by the time the bus got to the South Depot. Since I always give up my seat and stand, I can say that by the time we got done with the South Depot, there was never an open seat that I can remember. The only time there was one open was for the water parks. They would typically pick up at the West Depot first, then North, then East, then finish with the South (which is always the busiest). I would suggest, in your case, that you go to the West Depot and have your Dad keep his seat. He won't have any problem getting a seat that way. By the way, they almost always drop off in this same order. Sometimes they drop off at Port Orleans French Quarter first, and then proceed to POR (West, North, East, South).

We've been at building 28, garden view (right next to 26) and liked that one too. We've also been in building 16, but didn't like our view (we had a standard room that time and faced the parking lot).

It may be hit or miss. The safari was just too dark with very few animals. Having gone on the safari multiple of times in the morning, we were used to FAR more animals in view. At least the lions were awesome at night walking around.

Welcome home! Great trip report that I enjoyed reading. Thanks for posting it. :)

So excited to hear good feedback while during our final countdown for our trip!! So during the fireworks at MK the HUB area is now open to regular guests as a viewing point? Is it the same during parades?

Yes for Wishes and MSEP.

Love your feedback! Headed to POR 10/1-8. Interested in your room preference. We always end up in bldgs 25, 26, close to West Depot, but I am open to something new (in AB!).

Loved your report! So excited for our trip now! We are packed and ready to go. I really dislike those first few days home after a trip so I know how you feel! Thanks for your thoughts! Very appreciated!!! We are thinking of doing two rooms at POR for our next trip since our youngest will be over three.

We've been in that area with building 26 before, and it was good, but we liked 38 more for these reasons... It's right next to the mansions, so that was something new for us, and made this location feel a lot different. It's right on the river, and the walk along the river to get to the food court in the morning or evening is beautiful. To get to the food court, you get to walk through "ol man island", which is a much more active fun walk than the ones in other areas in AB. There isn't a parking lot in sight. It also felt very close to the North Depot. Our room was 3805, which was a first floor, inside corner room. It faced a nice quiet courtyard with shrubs and a lone large tree. Really a beautiful room location overall. Would highly recommend.

Not sure how many you have in your family, and you probably already know this, but the Alligator Bayou rooms at POR have a murphy bed in addition to two queens, so they sleep five. Maybe you wouldn't need two rooms?

Thanks for the report and glad you had a great time. Where is the hub area? At the old hub and how hard was it to get a space there?

Nice report. I do have one question. You mentioned "sitting in front of the stage" for Galactic Spectacular. What stage is that, and where? That's the first time I've heard of that.

Thanks!! Fortunately for us we have four which makes us 6 next year when our youngest turns three. We have been staying at the EP resorts the last few years with this trip beginning this week being our last stay at the BC! Price wise I have been looking at POR thinking we may be happier with two rooms there (paying about or slightly more of what you would pay for one deluxe room) as opposed to the other two choices for six which would be AOA or the cabins. We love our pool days and we love having a slide. That would give us the two bathrooms AOA would offer as well as a beautiful serene resort!! I've seen pictures online and it looks really peaceful.
