Kona Cafe This is just a lovely restaurant. The menu is varied, service, both from the wait staff and the kitchen, is very prompt. It is pretty, energetic, and open feeling. Both our breakfasts there were tasty. Our dinner was very good too. The kids were enchanted by their kiddie cones. Really, to me, this is the quintessential family restaurant with the Disney touch. Where else, in the real world, can you find prime rib, lapu lapus, children's activity papers, pan asian stir fry and ice cream cones surrounded by cotton candy at the same venue, never waiting more than 10 minutes for breakfast or 20 for dinner?
'Ohana We had a fun and tasty dinner here our first evening, after flying cross country from CA with very inadequate food. We had a late seating, around 8:30 (felt like 5:30 to us) and the restaurant was not super busy. This was geat for us because it allowed my three younger kids to participate in the activities fully. I was especially happy to see dd8 happily engaged in the hula lesson. Normally she is reticent about dancing in public, but the Disney magic was at work. Ds10, our budding gourmand, very much enjoyed the food. He has become a 'Ohana wing fan and tore through the peel and eat shrimp, too. I really liked the stir fried vegetables and the shrimp wontons. Truly, we were all full before the main dish came, so we just had a bit of pork and beef. The dessert was great! That banana sauce on top was luscious.
Captain Cook's This place is abysmal and horribly overpriced. I wouldn't order any food from them again and won't rely on them for grocery items either. Some serious re-thinking is in order.
A couple of other things worth noting The food we had at Primetime Cafe was really good. I had potroast, and dh had fried chicken. Service, while prompt, was not interesting or fun, and we were seated in a back room, away from the more active main area...probably due to having a larger party (6). Most of the tables in the main room seemed to seat 4.
The pizza at Pinocchio's was terrible, but the restaurant was cute with lots of murals and a place for the children to write wishes for the blue fairy to fulfill.
Brown Derby was very good; service, too. I can't recommend the grapefruit cake, though. IMHO, cream cheese and grapefruit combine to taste like vomit- not my favorite dessert flavor.
San Angel Inn wins hands down for atmosphere. We really liked the whole set up of the evening outdoor market. Our food was fine, about a B, I'd say. Believe it or not, we went on Rio de Tiempo twice. It is quite loud and crowded, but that worked for me. I thought it lent a certain something. Also, very happy to have restrooms right by the restaurant. Other places send you out of the building, sometimes over a whole country, to find a potty.
Chakranda Chicken is a place I rarely see reviewed here at the Dis which is too bad. I had fully planned to eat at Tusker House but was hungry after my second ride down Kali and Chakranda is right there. We all enjoyed our food: chicken stirfry, pot stickers, kids' chicken soup.
Tea at the GF was very delicious with a couple of exceptions. We had the tea that had the various pates and stilton with berries. I had not remembered that there are differences between British pates and French pates; namely that French pates are scrumptious and British pates range from bland to nasty (ground chicken with pistachios decorated with a strip of reddish jelly and surrounded by cold, damp croute. No thanks.) The Stilton was very fresh and bright. The scones were delectable. The pastries chosen by the children were also very fresh tasting which is important for cream puffs and eclairs. The tea itself was perfect, to my admittedly untrained taste.
Whew, I'll finish up later...
