Just a thought about reopening...

Well... most people in the US will not wear them. Very few areas of the country are trying to mandate masks, and most sheriff’s departments are refusing to uphold these mandates. It is about personal freedom. It’s not constitutional. Lawsuits are in process. Sure Disney is private property but that doesn’t allow them to do whatever they want to people.

Here in NJ you can't enter a grocery store without a mask. I'm not going to challenge it at this point, I just want to get in, get what I need and get out. I haven't been anywhere else, not to many place to go but I would guess it's the same wherever you go in NJ.

They can certainly make wearing a mask a condition to enter a theme park. Disney is not the government. The constitution has nothing to do with this.

Exactly. There’s lawsuits filed by lawyer plaintiffs here claiming injustice to civil liberties as you cannot force healthy people to wear masks. Our State is under Executive Order to wear masks in public. The courts won’t let anyone in without a mask. We’ll see how the cases pan out. Irony

It is debatable. They cannot make you do whatever they want. I agree that they have some control over people but they can’t make you do just anything. People win lawsuits all over the US against businesses that try to restrict things like burkas. But I don’t think it will come to that. Disney won’t touch anything that is politically controversial. It just isn’t worth it for them.

New Jersey is very different than the majority of the country. People who live in New Jersey are okay with the government playing a larger role in their lives— and that’s great. That’s the beauty of the United States. Things are not centralized, so people can self select into certain communities. But most of the US isn’t required to wear masks. And many US sheriff departments are refusing to enforce The mask orders that are out there. Where we live, things look normal and maybe 10% of the public wears a mask. Our local government has made statements reassuring citizens that they will never force anyone to wear a mask because it is illegal to do so. This has become a very political issue and I just think Disney will avoid it.

One other interesting thing I just read— airlines are not requiring passengers to wear masks. So they have gaged public sentiment on that. And I think it would be a lot less painful to wear a mask on a 2-4 hour flight than all day in the sun in a hot theme park.

Not sure where you get your information or what you have heard, read or experienced to cause you to draw this conclusion but I can assure it is not true. I live in the southern part of the state, the part that wants to secede from the north because most things here in NJ seem to be for the greater good of the northern part of our state. I live in NJ because this is where I was born and it seems I have never been able to escape LOL. That being said at this point in my life I'm probable "stuck" here to the end...In this case I really don't have that much of an issue with wearing a mask, it's not really that big of a deal to me but I don't want to wear one for the rest of my life. I am however more concerned with how long our governor is going to keep us on lockdown. I would hope that sometime soon we can begin stage 1 of the President's plan.

I also think it would be a good idea for people to wear masks on airplanes along with distancing on the plane. I don't think the airlines should be filling every seat in the near future.

Just curious what part of the country you are from. I see on the news areas of the country where law enforcement is going against orders from governors and mayors. I'm also wondering how long it's going to take here in NJ for people to start to push back on the governor's orders.

We have the same rule in NY, but many of our grocery stores have made it clear they will not prevent people from entering who don’t have one on. They said they don’t feel it is their job to have employees police it,

And, there are indeed people who have decided not to.

Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island are requiring masks when going into stores.

I haven't seen anyone in the store without a mask and they have a big sign posted at the door, "No Mask No Admittance" so I'm guess they mean what they say. They have a security guard stationed outside the store policing the number of people going into the store and making sure you have the mask on. I will have to ask the next time I go if they would allow someone in who wasn't wearing a mask.

For every person that says they won't wear a mask is another that says they won't go unless everyone's wearing a mask.
They will have to remain closed or pick a side.
I have to wear clothes every day in public and am often restricted to what kind of clothing I'm expected to wear. No difference to me.

Ours have the signs as well, but our biggest store, Wegmans, said not enforcing it. We stopped the other day and saw at least a few dozen people without them and others who had them, but not wearing over their noses either,

So, while we have a lot of people following it...my DH and I do...not all are. Personally, I am okay with it but I know others are not.

I think with Disney, it will be encouraged and may be required as part of a reopen plan with state, and I can see guests coming in with them, but I’d be surprised if Disney is going to be removing people who decide to remove them periodically if they aren’t that close to others.

If the weather is with us tomorrow we will be going to the store where we normally shop. I will see if I can enter without a mask, I'm thinking not.

We have only gone to the store we normally patronize although my DH had to go to two other stores last week to get peas for our split peas soup. Our normal store didn't have any, the local Acme didn't have any but the third store he went to did so we were able to make our soup! I guess there's something to 3 being the charm.

I have to say I would much rather not have to wear a mask but if it is going to help me and my DH be safe and healthy we will follow the mandate to wear the mask. I think in time this will have to end but for now we are ok with following the suggestions set down by our governing bodies.

I was at my store in PA yesterday. As of last Monday, you had to wear a mask in PA. There was a employee by the IN door, I assume checking for masks. It was 100% in the store. Last weekend it was maybe 50%. I hate it, hard to breathe.

I am going to bring this over here to this thread since we are talking about masks. This is what I posted on another thread:

There was a news conference today in Orlando with ORLANDO HEALTH which is one of the biggest hospital providers in the Orlando area with over 2,000 hospital beds.

While nothing was mentioned about Disney per-say, there were some interesting remarks from the top Doctors that I am sure Disney Executives will use in their decision making

- Orlando area itself seeing rapid decline of Covid patients with a total of only 26 in the hospital system throughout Orlando
- The top medical doctors and advisors were asked point blank are the Orlando Hospitals ready for the next phase of openings and they ALL said YES with plenty of rooms available if spike should occur

and with regards to MASKS, this was very interesting since everyone is talking about masks and this info could be used by Disney execs going forward:

The Doctors said that washing your hands and NOT touching your face is MUCH more beneficial than wearing masks. He went on to say if people dont know how to use the masks properly they can actually cause more harm than good. You touch the dirty mask with your bare hands to adjust it or take it off etc..... then you touch a door or a table, your stroller, baby bottle, etc......, You just cross contaminated everything.

I am sure the Disney execs are talking to these medical doctors and taking all this into consideration.

If I had to guess, and purely guess, CM's will be required to wear masks and guests it will be optional.

Since people can start shedding viruses before symptoms occur, by the time we suspect we're ill, we've probably already infected others.

Masks do reduce the amount of droplets and aerosolized particles that escape and coat surfaces/float in the air. Of course we have to remove masks to eat and drink. But that's still 6 out of 8 hours(thereabouts) when we're spraying fewer droplets around us. Any reduction is good.

I personally don't feel my freedom is infringed by wearing a mask. I'm quite happy to wear one actually - it's a minor inconvenience so the lovely elderly couple can breath in less of my exhaled aerosol, and the toddlers, running around touching everything, eat fewer droplets before kissing their grandparents.

Agree people need to be taught how to wear masks to confer the maximum benefit. Constantly touching/adjusting the mask with unwashed hands, for example, is worse than not wearing one.

So yeah, all ya’ll northeasterners are wearing masks. 8-) The national media seems to focus on the North of the country, so they make it seem like the New York metropolitan area is representative of the country. But it’s not. The USA is a big country with lots of diversity, and diversity of thought and lifestyle. It is different down south. I am not saying that there are not people wearing masks, but they are definitely in the minority. And most people I know have said they will go to jail over it (I personally would not, lol). But that’s part of why southern governors are opening up. They don’t have a choice. People will effectively open up for them. That is the will of the people. You see that happening in California. It isn’t possible for the police to arrest the thousands of people who went to beaches there this weekend and didn’t social distance. And it isn’t really clear whether they even have the constitutional authority to do so anyway. For the most part Northern governors are also giving the people what they want— and that’s a good thing. I am glad there are different states for different lifestyles, as opposed to living in a country like France where government is centralized. If ya’ll want masks, by all means wear them. We have lived in NYC, and we have a soft spot for NYC, still have friends up there, so I speak affectionately of NY— but it is different up there. Government is more obvious. But anyway, the point is that Disney will have a hell of a time getting most Americans to wear masks. Because only about 7 states are “mandating” them. That means the majority of the country doesn’t want them. Disney will go with the majority, especially when the science on masks isn’t definitive. That’s why planes are not going with masks. They don’t want to deal with telling people what to do as is. Can you imagine the news stories of people getting dragged off planes for refusing to wear masks? It’s just too much drama for companies. They always take the past of least resistance. And now that the whole mask deal has become a political lightening rod, I just think Disney won’t touch it. But that’s just my opinion! And yes, I don’t like the whole mask thing. They look dirty and oppressive and I associate them with disease. Gross. They make breathing difficult. I don’t mind Disney taking my temp though.

Biggest problem I see with masks is that now more people are wearing them - no one is staying 6 feet away from anyone.

I get the resistance to the masks. They’re ubiquitous up here in the Northeast, but personally, I hate everything about them.

I hate that my wife is wearing one when she steps out of the ICU to FaceTime her family “goodnight” because she has to stay later than expected tonight... again. I hate having to constantly remind my 8-year-old why we need to do this to help protect others in our community... despite how it makes it a little harder to breathe while biking. But what I especially hate is that these things somehow manages to separate us all societally more than the six feet we’re reminded to observe.

No one likes these things.

I’m sure on September 10, 2001, the idea being held up in long security lines prior to even entering the park, opening up your purses and coolers for strangers to handle your personal items, and raising your arms for a metal detecting wand would’ve elicited your fair share of indignant “Disney will have a hell of a time getting most Americans to...”

I am in no way equating 9/11 to COVID-19. It’s just interesting that the people that have politicized masks and view them as an affront to their personal liberties, are the same people handing over their bags to be rifled through by a stranger every single time they enter WDW. People adapt.

I hope Disney doesn’t need to go this route, but if they do, I’m sure most of us will respect it. We’ll wear our masks, we’ll try to smile through them while thanking the CMs for being there, and we’ll look forward to the day when we can reflect on this bizarre time as an historic experience that we were all fortunate enough to live through.
