Just a friendly crosstown baseball game here in Chicago

Yesterday was the second of three scheduled inter-league crosstown ballgames between the floundering Northside Cubs and the world champs, Southside Sox. Now I am a lifetime North-sider, Cubs fan. However, catcher, Mike Barrett was way out of line when he slugged A.J. Pierzynski, after A.J. smashed into Barrett at a home plate play. A.J. was playing good ball, Barrett lost his cool. As it was, the Sox cleaned the Cubs' clock, 7-0.

Anyway, fun and games at the ole' ballyard, when grownups play a kids' game. :woohoo: How are the inter-league games going in your area, any crosstown rivalries?? :cheer2:

Pictured just after a body smashing collision at home plate, mask flying in the air, both are on the ground. It was a hard blow, but a fine play.

Ahhh, nothing like crosstown rivalries.

That was quite a commotion at home plate!

I don't understand why in the MLB a runner doesn't have to slide to avoid a home plate collision. My son was ejected from a game (and the following game) for not sliding, even though he was trying to avoid a collision and the catcher was far up the base line. Why not in pro baseball?

I know that the Nationals and Orioles played and that the Orioles won, but it wasn't too newsworthy, even here.

Barrett was quite contrite after the game, as well he should have been. WAY over the line to be upset about getting barreled over. Block the plate, it's the chance you take. He should get quite the suspension.

I was shocked about how quickly Ozzie got in there; he almost beat Podsednik to the pile and Scott was like 4 feet away.

The luckiest guy in the whole thing was John Mabry. If Anderson's punch would have landed he might STILL be down.

that was a commotion! Barrett was definetly in wrong, but
didn't it look like A.J. bumped into him abit on his way to "getting his helmet"? :scratchin

i do thank them, it's taking a little news time away from Bonds home run! :teeth:

Not really. AJ would have bumped him with the front of his shoulder, and he might not even have made contact at all had Barrett not been trying to get to him. That's how I saw it anyway.

I didn't watch the game, but I saw the footage on the news this morning. I couldn't believe my eyes

I understand that emotions run high with these games, but you would think that professional players would have a little more self control.

it's nice to see someone else fighhting besides the Yankees/RedSox :rotfl:

All I can say is GO SOX GO!!

THey are the World Series Champions!!!! :cool1:

I have been a lifetime White Sox fan and it is great to see the Sox get the best of the Cubs.

AJ should get the same fine as Barrett. He instigated the whole mess by slamming his hand on home plate - nice show of sportsmanship  and then ramming his shoulder into Barrett. Yes, Barrett was wrong but so was he and as much at fault. I do agree that the play at the plate was clean, it was AJ's nonsense afterward that was out of line.

that's what i thought. but i do think barrett is more at fault.
it's just that i don't think a.j. is as inocent as claims to be.

Or a good ol' baseball rhubarb.....:)

O's and Nats are tied 1 game each.

But Hockey is the only sport that has it right Let them fight it out until one goes down then break it up and let them cool off for a while.

I'm surprised they don't test all of those involved for ROID rage .

Too much testosterone, I guess, with all these fights at baseball games and hockey games ;)

New York, New York - need I say more Oh yeah, that fight yesterday had nothing on the Roger vs. Mike toss at the head/throw the bat of a few seasons ago.
