I'd wait for the D700's replacement to come out. Although I am fearful that it will make a jump to ~20mp. I'm already finding that 16mp is too much for me.

This is why I'm not thinking about the replacement, I just don't want an insane amount of pixels. That said, if improvements are huge I may consider it. But my true hope is the replacement will knock the price of the D700 down a bit. I've thought about this, researched it and it feels right for me.
Oh and good news: DH said, "Well, I could use a new computer..." I feel a "yes" coming on.
I feel your pain, Ann!! With DD#1 in her 3rd year at Boston University, her studying in France for the year and DD#2 going to college the fall of 2012, only months after DD#1 graduates BU and the same time that she goes to graduate school............I am thinking my D80 and the lenses I have now will be with me for a loooong time to come. By then, I figure the D20,000 will be out and the 2.8 lenses will have VR4 or 5
I went to Staples and purchased the 3M D7000 conversion kit. Basically, you crack open a pack of post it notes, write D7000 on one and apply it to ANY camera! It works like a charm. Imagine how jealous all your friends will be when they see you rockin the latest from Nikon!

My thoughts exactly. Everyone that has one that I know of right now LOVES their D700...so I have a feeling if I could get a good deal on a used one or if the price drops a bit, I'd be extremely happy not having the follow-up to the D300s or D700.
I'm not making huge prints anytime soon and don't need a 20+ mp camera that is only going to result in getting half as many pictures on a memory card and taking up even more room than the hundreds of RAW files already do on my hard drives.
If you find any good deals Wen, let me know. For now, I'll have to settle on some new glass. Poor me.
Well, the hubby has cracked! He has his new laptop all picked out and I should have the D700 in my hands in the next 2-3 weeks.
The only thing I didn't count on was becoming emotionally attached to my current gear. The thought of selling the D90 and lenses (part of the deal) has me a little weepy.
