DS's class has to do a jump rope "routine" in PE tomorrow. They have to have 5 different kinds of jumps in it. ??????????????? When I was a kid, the girls jumped rope and the boys NEVER did. DS basically learned to jump yesterday. I've been told this school is geared toward the girls...NO male teachers, probably more sports for girls than the boys. Now co-ed jump roping! I don't believe it. And they were told that it will be figured into their grade.

I am just curious, is something wrong with males jump roping?

my male cousin, (will be 17 in May) not only jumps rope, but he is on a team and has gone to many different competitions placing in first, second, and third, many, many times at regionals, nationals, and has participated in junior olympics many times and participated in Worlds has placed in the top 10 including placing 4th during at least one of them. Jump Roping is not only for girls, is there something specific that you find wrong with guys jumping rope?

It actually is a pretty physical thing to do and is definately good for you.

Jumping rope is a great aerobic exercise too. I don't see anything wrong with it being used for PE.

DD's school just had a jump-rope-athon to raise money for the American Heart Association.

DS's school incorporates jumping rope into gym class. Mind you it is not every week and it isn't the only thing they do in class, but they do jump rope. I do not see a problem with it and I think it is great physical activity.

Jump roping is a wonderful exercise because it burns calories big time and is a stamina building skill. Have you ever noticed that all boxers jumprope. It burns more calories than running, especially done fast, and builds muscle.

I think that it is good to expose kids to everything, and jumproping is not "just for girls" Kids at my daughters school do it all the time. I think it is not a good thing to make a big issue about it to your son.

Glo stole my brain this morning. I was typing the same answer she was but she posted it first. :)

I <3 that is because great minds think alike ;) :)

boxers use jumping rope during training because it is such a great exercise, not only because of the aerobic benefits, but also because it improves hand/eye co ordination.

Jumping rope is an awesome aerobic activity. If there are some boys & girls that really learn to love jumping rope and carry it into their adult lives they will benefit greatly!!

Yes, it is fairly common.

My son was doing jump rope in PE in kindergarten. In fact, boys and girls were both doing it when I was a kid as well.

I guess the teacher took into account that this skill should have been learned earlier/ or with family.

Look at athletes.. male athletes use jumprope all the time for training.. think of Rocky movie.. or even in aerobics/fitness classes for both men and women.

I know when I was in school boys had to jump rope and girls had to play flag football. Boys also had to do gymnastic floor routines as well as square dancing. Nothing was considered just for girls or just for boys.

My sons started jumping rope in Kindergarten as part of PE. About a month ago, they did their yearly "Jump Rope for Heart" fundraiser. My husband also jumps rope as part of his exercise routine. It's really good exercise!

I'm surprised that your son's PE teacher didn't include this until now.

When I was in grade school - 15 years ago, we always had coed jump rope. It surprises me that there is anything but coed...

It is a great exercise!

My daughters both jump rope in school. Like someone else posted above, they did "Jump Rope for Heart" where they jumped for the American Heart Association. The boys loved it as much as the girls did. Of course, this was a specialized unit, so they only jump for two weeks out of the whole school year. It is great exercise. I tried it and didn't last too long!

I remember doing lots of jump roping in PE - boys and girls - and that was back in the 70s and early 80s. It's great exercise and good for developing motor skills and coordination. I don't see the problem with it. These days the teacher would probably get a lot more complaints by excluding a specific gender from an activity. Nothing's really just for boys or just for girls anymore!

I think it's good to give the boys a look that girls are better at some thing than them!!!!

Seriously - schools now try to incorporate various sports so that each sex gets to participate in them and learn about them. Our school does this in sections - one section might be 4 or 6 weeks of Basketball, 4 or 6 weeks of Volleyball, 4 or 6 weeks of Bowling, 4 or 6 weeks of Roller Blading, 4 or 6 weeks of floor coordination (gymnastics as most known or cheerleading as the boys would consider it) - they have to do pyramids as a group learning to work together and the best way that the pyramid will "hold" up and that will only happen with teamwork.

What is wrong with teaching a new skill and then testing them on it and giving them a grade? If teachers never introduced new things, kids wouldn't learn anything. It is called learning! :D

I don't see a problem with this. I think it is great that schools are teaching students that all sports are appropriate for both sexes.

The PE in our schools have moved away from competitve sports and moved into life long types of activities that kids can do forever. Jump rope would certainly fit into this category.

i guess i must have missed where jump roping was girly.

All children in our sschool do jump rope unless they are physsically disabled. It is good aerobic exercise and very good for coordination. Some of our best jumpers are boys. We also do football, basketbal, gymnastics, bike safety, tennis skills and many more sports.
Jump rope girlie. Not at all. Jumping and hopping are basic large motor skills neeed by all children
