Single dad with two teenage daughters just back from the 7 day Eastern with some random thoughts, comments and suggestions. Hope their helpful……….

We were in cabin 6104 between mid ship and aft elevators. Great location for the entertainment and for dining.

By the way, the balcony was worth it. We used it watch the ship going into and out of ports. Also a great place to apply sun block without it getting all over the carpet. Or my quiet place to enjoy the blue water.

Packed way too many clothes. Didn't need six pairs of shorts. Lived in board shorts and tank tops most days.

I did wear my flip flops (leather) to a couple of “casual” night dinners. I didn’t get weird looks and it totally fit the atmosphere.

I was afraid the girls wouldn't find anyone to meet on the ship. WRONG, they both made some great friends and were so busy I only got to see them on excursions or at dinner. They all cried when we left the ship on the last day.

Both girls used either the Oceaneers Club or the Stack as a meeting place but took of with their friends after that. There was plenty to do on the ship even if they didn’t participate in the organized clubs.

Take lots of pictures. I thought I did, realized later at home that I didn't take nearly enough.

Golden Eagle on St. Marteen and 5 Star on St. Thomas were both the best excursions. Very courteous, knowledgeble and helpful in making the vacation fun. They made snokling so much fun!

First time my youngest daughter (11) was "exposed" to the a la naturual (naked) sunbathers in St. Marteen. Not a big problem and it added to her education that the world is different than in the U.S.

Didn't use the walkie talkies. Figured that the girls were on the boat and they couldn't get too lost.

Loved seeing both the RCCL boat and the Carnival boat docked with the Magic in St. Thomas. Got "mooned" by an RCCL passenger when we were leaving.

Had a horn war going between the three ships when we left St. Thomas. Fun to hear the Magic's unique sound.

The suction cup hooks for the bathroom came in handy for wet swim suits.

A comment from my oldest daughter (16) on the second day. “Dad they seem to be always cleaning”. She was right. Crew members everywhere cleaning constantly.

The crew went out of they’re way to make sure that the kids had a great time. Dinner was never boring. Simon our head waiter along with Manual and Rita our servers were great. Always had puzzles or games to keep them on their toes (as well as the adults).

Two for one on drinks of the day at the bar near the adult pool after three in the afternoon.

Loved going to the movies and getting out of the hot sun during the day.

Never laughed so hard than at the final show on Friday night.

Don’t miss the shows. They are all done well and your kids will talk about them forever. Remember I have two teenagers and they still talked about the shows, at the airport on our way back home and when we got home.

The public bathrooms were always clean.

Check Shutters everyday for your pictures. Especially if you have small kids who are involved in the Character pictures. Keep them together or you’ll lose them in the HUGE photo gallery. Buy early and avoid the lines.

You can’t settle your gratuity bill until Thursday.

Having two days at sea before the first port of St. Marteen was a blessing. We had plenty of time to explore the boat and rest up for the excursions.

Morning excursions meant getting up early but it also allowed us to shop in the afternoons while in ports.

You knew you were on a Disney cruise but you didn’t feel overwhelmed by it. And this coming from a Southern California (about 20 minutes from Disneyland) native.

This will be a vacation that the girls and I will be talking about remembering for a long time. Thanks Disney.

I was new to the board when I saw your post inquiring about "flip flops" I had such a good laugh reading the responses you got. Glad to see that it didn't make a difference. My parents took my son and he wore shorts to dinner every night (he was on a 3 day so no formal night) My mom said everyone was dressed in resort casual. Thank you for all your advice. As I plan a family reunion cruise, these tips will come in handy!

Hi Mike,

Great tips!;) I have another one that I forgot in my trip report - deodorizer and a night light for the bathroom. They were a lifesaver!:teeth: I picked up a small deodorizer in Bath & Body that was concentrated and needed only one spray. The night light was a plug in deodorizer with an outlet for DH's razor. It worked out very well.

We also packed way too many clothes. The dining room was much more casual than I expected.

I didn't hear about the mooning. That's hysterical!:hyper:

Thx for the report. We will be in 6100 & 6101 which I assume is right near where you were. It sounds good!

Great report - really enjoyed your tips!!!!! Still laughing about the mooning!!!!!! Must have been quite a surprise!

Hey there!

I found that our WALKIES didn't work. Too much metal on the ship. They only worked when we were out on Deck 4 and practically able to see each other. No matter tho, like you said, the kids aren't getting off the ship!

I ran up to get Alana when we were leaving St. Thomas. We burst out onto Deck 4 and I (rather loudly) exclaimed "Look how much prettier our boat is than theirs!!" to Alana. Everyone in the vicinity laughed. Maybe that's why you got MOONED (ha ha). But wow! those things looked like floating Motel 6s compared to our Magic!

Skip the NIGHTLIGHT and leave your closet door cracked. It works like a charm!

Gotta have CHEESE WIZ for the fish at Castaway Cay. They recognize the can so they'll follow you around even after it's empty. When they come up and check out your camera it's cuz they're makin sure it ain't a can of cheese wiz. They always came cruising back to us (Cheese Wiz holders) after they'd go take a gander at a camera. They do get feisty about the stuff tho, so keep your fingers tucked in your fists! I got a couple little nips (no biggie at all...well worth the trouble). Regardless, Alana (7) didn't want to hold the can. Cheese Wiz is $5 a can on St Thomas, so you could bring some to sell the natives at a hefty profit as well (ha ha).

I've got a real good automatic payment plan going on my cruise and am hoping to take another next year!! Can't wait...ain't the Magic great incentive tho?

mb2456,

It sounds like you all had a great time; especially your daughters!!! What about you?? What did you enjoy the most? Did you find enough to do while they were busy on their own? (I ask because I'm also a single parent).

Thanks for the great report. We can't wait. Hope we get the "Horn Wars" in ST Thomas.

Hey Mike! Tell Janine, Chelsea says "Hi"!! We were on our veranda facing RCCL when we were leaving St. Thomas! The horn war was awesome! I think the Magic won!! I videoed them, so maybe I got the mooning on tape!!Ha Ha!!

To answer your question, is there was enough for a single person to do on the cruise? You kind of have to look into what your personal tastes are.

I spent time on deck enjoying the sun, the company of others and a great book I've been trying to finish on the days we were out to sea. When it got hot, I went to see a movie. Or have a beer at one of the bars. The Navigator had plenty of things to do. Some looked like fun, others didn't seem so exciting. I don't entertain so the cooking seminars didn't interest me. Or ice scupture!

Remember, my kids were off on their own during this trip. I saw them for shows before dinner, dinner, shore excursions and if I ran into them (and their friends) on deck. That's it. They're both 16 and 11 and spending time with dad was not a priority with them. I did however get dragged to a movie with my oldest on one day (I think she got tired of her friends for a day).

I met people, went to cabaret shows, explored parts of the ship myself. I stayed busy when I wanted and enjoyed my alone time when I wanted. I met some singles, but this wasn't a romantic trip for me.

I suggest doing one excurssion for each island. We had morning excurssions for both St. Marteen, and St. Thomas and that gave us time in the afternoon to explore the islands on our own. Both on the excurssions and while exploring your going to run into people to meet and have the opportunity to stay busy.

Once again, it will be what you want to make it. There is definitely many things to keep you busy and involved, there is also plenty not to do if you so choose

Most of all, have fun, don't stress. It all just seems to work out in the end.

Mike

Great report. That's the first I've heard of two for one drinks at the adult pool bar. I'll have to keep an eye out!

jindy,

although I am not a single parent I did just take the July 24 Magic with only my ds - hubby doesn't care for the whole Disney theme;

my son met friends on the bus leaving the Hyatt and spent most of the cruise hanging with them; we had meals together and went on excursions together and did some in port shopping together but on sea days and after dinner I did not see him - I thought I would feel lonely or bored but could not have been more wrong; I enjoyed the relaxing, I attended a wine tasting, I enjoyed watching an entire movie in the cabin on a cloudy day without interruption, I enjoyed and did meet several other single parents as well as several couples who encouraged me to join them for cocktails, etc. I don't think you will have any problems. Disney is a very friendly ship.
