If it says 100% juice whether it is store brand or Juicy Juicy, the only other additions are water and vitamin C. Fruit juice is just not very nutritious, except orange, in comparison to whole fruit.

All of us with kids have been told for years to limit (especially apple) to practically none. My pediatrician and especially dentist were/are adament about milk and water being much better choices. :confused3

Sorry my post wasn't in defense of juicy juice...I was curious if it really was what it said it was on the bottle.

I firmly agree with you that juice should be given in limited quantities and it doesn't take being a mom to figure that out.

Very good point...while organic can have its benefits healthwise, it typically containts the same amounts of calories, fat and sugar that are in similar non-organic items.

ITA to a point. Yes organic junk food is still junk food. However most of the time it is marginally better than its non organic counter parts. IE organic junk foods will not contain hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils

DO NOT apologize for a thing! I did not mean to contradict you! Some people refer to fruit drinks as juice which drives me nuts! :goodvibes

This is true as well...I'm thinking more of people I know who are trying to lose weight and think that they will lose weight if they eat 5 newman-os instead of 5 regular oreos, for example. Not so much for all the processed ingredients in them/not in them.

I've been following this thread for a long time now. I agree that Kate is nuts. Now if I had 8 kids I would probably be nuts too, but in my opinion there is probably some medication that could help her relax. God knows she needs SOMETHING! I don't think she's a horrible person but she's uptight to start with and she is overwhelmed with too many kids. Yes other people have even more kids but their personalities and lifestyles can handle it. I don't have 8 because I couldn't handle 8!!! :rotfl:

No wonder Tom loves you. You're insightful and perceptive. Wonder why Kate sometimes creates her own misery?

Like taking all 8 kids to a FURNITURE store, not having many extended family relationships, not having her 6 4 yr olds in 1/2 day preschool, being on tv very regularly...

I don't think she's evil or bad either. :3dglasses

I don't doubt that is true. But she focuses so much on the organic part, that message gets lost. And she comes off as condescending when she talks about the organic food. She's no better than me - she simply makes different choices about what she feeds her family.

I think I told this story way back at the beginning of the thread the first time organic was mentioned.
I did go through a point where I used the word organic a lot. Yes I was totally being snarky about it too. It all started when we discovered DD reacts to artificial colors and other artificial ingredients. It was a very stressful time trying to figure out what was going on, having people make snarky remarks etc. It all came to a head one day when we were at the park for a play date. DD was eating her lunch, which just happened to be an applegate farms organic "Lunchable". A mom make some remark about me feeding my DD a lunchable after "depriving her" for so long.
From then on out I made it a point to emphasize organic whenever that mom was around.

My point is that we dont know why Kate throws the word around. Maybe because she feels she has to justify herself. Where some of you see it as her saying "I'm a better mom than you are", I can relate with with her and see her as being defensive about her choices.

:thumbsup2

I had one co-worker ys ago insist that sunnydelight was "juice" and was just as good for her granddaughter as 100% juice.

I can't remember where we were now but I remember someone (server, counter person etc) insisting that Hi-C punch was juice.

ETA: I do agree that juice should be limited as it really offers little nutritious value. I do wonder if KAte waters it down but just doesn't say so because of the sponsorship.

I probably would do the same thing. LOL.

I have a friend whose children are (mildly) allergic to peanuts. To hear her talk, you would think these kids would drop dead at the sight of a jar of Jif. (they won't - they aren't severe allergies at all) She loudly announces every time we're out for lunch that it's time to come eat their SOY BUTTER sandwich. She does it no matter who she's with, too. I've known her & been around the kids for 7 years. I don't need to have it announced to me. LOLOLOL.

If there is a story to Kate's attitude, I'd sure love to hear it!
(and if we hear it in a future episode, I'm convinced someone from TLC is reading here ;) )

While their reactions in the past were mild that doesn't mean that they couldn't react severly if exposed again.

Peanut oils are very persistant. There was a story a few rs ago about a kid that dropped dead from the breath of a classmate that had just eaten peanut butter. Cross contamination is a very real threat

they had their retest this summer, and according to mom, it's still considered a mild (non-anaphylactic) allergy. they've grown out of most of the other allergies, thank goodness.

It's just how she acts to those that know about it and have for years. It gets a little annoying. LOL. I get the importance when she's around people that don't know and when she's dealing with the school, etc.

And the GWoPpos will criticize it!! Oh, it's been a busy week. I'm too tired to catch up, but I will say that I had organic whole wheat pasta shells today. I forgot that I dislike whole wheat pasta's texture, organic or not. Blech. Hehe!!

DD14 had a teacher in middle school that told the students that HFCS and any artificial additives were evil and parents that fed those to their children were committing child abuse.QUOTE]

That is okay...the Home Ec. teacher in my building told a class that I was abusing my twins because I wasn't breast feeding.

On "organic debate" I've yet to hear anyone talk about going organic that didn't have a little bit of that condesending attitude. I went a conference this summer, the girl I roomed with had started eating organic and talked for two days about how great she felt. Of course, she told me this over a smoked turkey sandwich with mayo and a big grab of doritos.

LOL...ITA
I do like the texture of the whole grain spelt pasta. From what I gather spelt is in the wheat family but has lighter/finer texture when ground as a whole grain flour.

I agree Kate does make things more difficult on herself by having to have things a certain way...or by having a mental picture of how things will play out.

But at the beginning of the Furniture store episode she does say...we wanted to take the little kids to pick out their beds because it is something we did with the big girls.

I can't tell you the number of times I have done something with three children under five just because I did it with my DD. It is hard to give up the mental image of how you thought you'd be raising your kids. It is like admitting defeat...hard to explain unless you have multiples.

Even Jon did it in the Christmas tree episode...he said they went to cut their own tree because it was something they had always done with the twins.

Pot meet kettle...
Just like your condescending attitude in point out that she was eating something that isn't organic

Yes, and then she spent a lot of time at the store poring over tiny pictures in a catalog while the kids ran around and one was horribly constipated :scared1: (I'm sure we all remember that!)
I wondered why she didn't go to the store and look around first, or get the catalog in advance, and make her decision, then bring the kids to "pick out" the beds. Let's face it, the kids did not make the decision, she did; even at the last minute as the store owner was writing up the order she made a last minute change. Then she showed the girls the tiny picture in the catalog. I don't have a problem with her making the actual choice-of course she should. But she made the whole thing unnecessarily difficult :confused3 The could have been in and out of there in 15 minutes and then gone for a treat to celebrate. :confused3
I guess that wouldn't have made an entire episode though!

I don't think she pointed out the Doritos to the girl - just to the Dis'ers. Are you sensitive about the organic issue or something? That was a bit uncalled for. Unless you know her or something outside of this post . . .

Glad you said this. I thought it was just me :confused3

Defensive and/or rude (not the only example) in my opinion. I'm glad you brought it up. This is supposed to be fun. :confused3

Yup - some on here take all of this show and internet "life" WAY too seriously. The phrase "chill out" has come to mind more than a few times on this thread.
