Has anyone experienced any type of joint pain while on Atkins? DH has been doing Atkins for about 6 months and has gone through muscle aches and such, recently he is experiencing joint pain in his knee. He did not injure it recently but has had 2 previous surgeries on it the last one about 11 years ago!!

I say possibly arthritis settling in but he asked me to ask all of you your opinions, experiences or thoughts on this..............

As always, THANKS!!

I haven't experienced this but another thread has a reminder about potassium getting low. Is he taking a good multivitamin?

Generally people find inflammation-type ailments like joint pain improve on a low-carb diet. I'd think after 6 months, he may have depleted a vitamin or mineral in his body.

Hopefully someone else has some experience on this one.

I hope he's feeling better soon!

Found some info on the Atkins website (www.atkins.com). This article deals with vitamin C and some of the symptoms of deficiency. One of the symptoms listed is:

Joint pain reduction. Painful joints associated with gout may be related to an accumulation of uric acid. Although uric acid is excreted through urine, vitamin C can accelerate its removal and excretion.9

There are some suggestions for adding vitamin C into your diet while eating low carb:

Many foods are rich in vitamin C, which gives you the option to chose those low on the glycemic index. Citrus fruits are first thing many people think of a source of vitamin C, but they are also full of natural sugars, and therefore high in carbs. Vegetables such as red and green peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, asparagus and dark, leafy vegetables are also sources of vitamin C, without the high carbohydrate content. During the Induction phase of the Atkins Nutritional Approach™, these are your best sources. When you move to Ongoing Weight Loss, berries that are the first fruits you will add back into your menus, and they are also excellent sources of vitamin C. You will gradually incorporate more fruit in the later phases of the program, including citrus fruit.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. I told it to DH and he appreciates it. He took some Vitamin C earlier and says it is helping with the knee pain!!
He also took some D.

He will be vigilant with taking his Vitamins now. He continually does Induction and very rarely goes above 25 carbs per day!! I think he should increase carbs for a little bit along with Vitamins and see how he feels...............

Thanks again..................

Well, it was a bit of a shot in the dark on my part - chalk it up to luck. So happy to hear it's helping!! We're supposed to be feeling BETTER on low-carb, not worse. Best wishes to you and your DH!! :sunny:
