Johnny Depp Fans Are Petitioning To Bring Him Back For 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Reboot

I think they should handle Pirates not as a reboot, but follow new characters in that world with only cameo appearances by some of the originals. If they played it right, The pirate Redd would be a perfect lead character.

Can't we just be done with the POTC movies? Only the first three were any good.
With budgets of about $1.2B total and worldwide grosses of $4.5B, I don't think we are seeing the end of them any time soon. Though I agree I lost interest pretty quick. Of course I feel the same way about Fast and Furious, but those things print money as well.

Captain Jack Sparrow was a great character originally, but he is not a good *protagonist*, which is what the 4th and 5th movies tried to make him, and it just didn't work. The character has more than run his course as a primary character in the story.

I think a reboot could be okay if they're ever allowed to drop the blow everything up / make everything more complicated / etc. blockbuster nonsense and really focus on the story. Go back in time to when pirates were more dominant (the movies suggest that their numbers / power has been shrinking leading up to the series, so go further back in the timeline and look at what it was like before). I think I'd make the lead(s) younger - maybe a young brother and sister who stow away or get caught up on a pirate ship for some other reason. Or maybe they were raised as pirates already and they are the crew's secret weapons because they can trick people into thinking they're just lost children or something else. I dunno. Whatever, as long as it's not a love story - they've done more than enough with pointless love stories in the last few movies and I've really stopped caring.

But, anyway, I don't think Depp would add much by continuing to be in the movies. If anything, Sparrow could maybe be referenced as some sort of legendary figure (similar to how Elizabeth knew the stories about him in the first movie before they met). But I think it would be better to start everything from scratch and make something totally new.

Same with all the live action remakes. I'm tired of constant remakes, reboots, and endless sequels that rehash the same plots.

If Disney wants to make more pirate movies, I would be good with the "Peter and the starcatchers" books becoming movies.

Im with you guys. Im in a colossal minority since I do not care for any of the Marvel stuff but the money it makes how do you not.

Everyone seems to say this but SOMEBODY is out there giving Disney billions of dollars every time they live action rehash something. They'll never stop. :(

This is the age of hollywood now. There is no originality. It is easier to be lazy and just "reboot" or "remake" movies. Hollywood and the movie industry in general have become a joke. Every now and then you get a decent flick but for the most part, the best stuff now is streaming on your TV on Netflix, Hulu, Prime, HBO, Showtime, Starz etc.
I think the Irishman proved, good movie makers, big stars, etc dont need big movie releases in theaters.
I havent been to a movie in a theater since last fall and havent seen anything to get me there anytime soon.

The thing is though that when you look at what the audiences go see, it's always the franchise pictures/remakes etc. Those are making the money, so can you blame Hollywood for making so many. Any kind of new, original picture, or even a new IP hoping to become a franchise, always fail. The recognized names are what's selling right now, and they are mostly the only thing that is selling.

Yep. I hate to say it, but a night at the movies costs me over $100 between babysitter, a moderate dinner, couple tickets and some snacks. I'm not doing it for an iffy movie. I'm not doing it for anything that isn't a special effects loaded monster that needs the whole screen and surround sound. Not going to a rom-com, or a historical drama, or a comedy. All those I can see at home, on my big tv with my pretty good surround sound, with my own popcorn after the kids go to bed.

You want me to shell out for the movies, it's going to be something that needs to be seen there. Hollywood has the right idea right now, and it's a problem partially of their own and the cinema chains' making. It's so expensive it needs to be a sure thing for entertainment. Not for art, entertainment. So make those tentpole sequels and reboots and movie universes and common characters. Because it's about the only way to really make it work.

Outside of those categories, I think Us was the highest domestic grossing movie in 2019. It ranked 12th at less than 200MM.

I actually generally agree with you, though I do wish audiences were more receptive to some of the big SFX movies that are not as well-known IP. Look at Alita Battle Angel which struggled at the box office. I do wish we could get more original stuff in that mold and not just all Marvel and Fast & Furious.

Yeah. I agree. Though I tried to watch Alita and it just didn't do it for me.

Yeah, I get that. Still, I'd like to see more movies like it - but they really are a risky investment in today's market.

Even with the Disney remakes, I prefer the ones that really change up the story like Maleficent or Dumbo - however when the carbon-copy ones make so much more money, I understand why they do it that way. I am looking forward to Mulan as it looks quite different - I wonder how it'll do though?

My husband and I watched the remake of Lady and the Tramp recently. While it hit all the warm fuzzy moments.... it was VERY distracting to have the details mushed around to make room for Diversity and Whitewashing History. Last time I checked, Mr and Mrs. Darling were not in an inter-racial relationship in the 1910's. And Aunt Sarah's cats are Siamese, not some jumble of jazz-funk tabby cats. I understand they want to re-tell the tales without having the stereotypes and offended people, but there is a difference between live action remake and an alternate reality, ala the Watchmen.
On topic, Disney did a terrible thing to the POTC by making FIVE movies that couldn't be mirrored in the rides, pushing the limits of that PG-13 rating , and jumping the gun to fire Johnny Depp BEFORE letting the domestic violence evidence play out fully.
