Joe Sixpack!!!!!!!!!!

Why does being middle class mean you aren't smart? I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.

I want somebody who understands my life and the pains I feel. People like the Kennedys, who have lived lives of privilege, can't possibly know what it's like to struggle to pay bills.

I just don't get this. Why do you think Obama or Biden don't understand your life? Obama was raised by a single Mom and his grandparents, he got a good education but he never had a life of privilege. Biden was a single parent, he is hard working and commutes to work so he can be with his family everyday.

If we ever get to see Palin's tax records I think we will find she is not struggling to pay her bills.

I really don't want someone who is "average" to run this country. Do you think Bush ever understood the regular person? Everyone thought he'd be great to have a beer with and sadly we all found out that really isn't a good thing when it comes to being the POTUS.

Let's not fall into that trap again. We really do need to elect people who can lead. Truth is even if the POTUS would be fun to have a beer with that is not going to happen. I haven't heard that Bush invited any average people to the WH for a beer.

That is seriously condescending in my mind. I think of Joe Six-Pack as an uneducated, beer-swilling idiot sitting around watching Jerry Springer.

And that is seriously condescending my mind!

"Joe Six-Pack" is not sitting around and watching Jerry Springer. Joe Six-Pack is who makes this country work. Joe Six-Pack is out there busting his hump everyday. This country is built on the sweat and effort of Joe Six-Pack. Joe Six-Pack doesn't think he's better than anybody else, he just knows a job needs doing, so he's going to do it. All work is noble. Just because somebody where's a blue-collared shirt doesn't make him less of a person or less important than you. Disgusting.

Please go back and read my post again. Where did I say anything at all about Obama and Biden? I said I think SP's life is probably closest to my own.

And Joe Six Pack is the one Republicans want to either make less so he can qualify for welfare to get his healthcare, or can't understand why he doesn't just "make more money" or "get his priorities straight" so he can afford healthcare, all while paying his mortgage, insane gas prices, and feeding his family. So, who's really going to help out "Joe Six Pack"?

I think you make an interesting point but having someone who understands "middle class" issues, in my opinion, should be in a position to make valued assessments at the local level (perhaps up to and including the state level) but certainly not at an international level.

I think we need a president that understands world affairs and knows how to pick a staff and cabinet that can help him make decisions that benefit Americans of all levels.

America fell for the good ol' boy character when they picked President G.W. Bush and what a fiasco that has been when viewed by most of the rest of the world.

I have been very fortunate to travel a lot around the world and I speak with a lot of people in other countries. Overwhelmingly, most think we made a very bad choice with President Bush.

I am sure there will be others on this board who will be diametrically opposed to my "analysis" but that's what I "see".

And because drinks wine instead of beer they "don't get it'? :confused3

I think that is exactly why people find the term "Joe Six-Pack" offensive. The term itself sounds belittling to the blue-collar workers that you're describing. As far as I can tell, no one has an issue with the fact that Sarah Palin is trying to connect with blue-collar people. It's the fact that she's doing it by characterizing them in such a condescending manner.

I think we as a nation have become too "touchy feely" in choosing our elected officials.

I vote on the issues - not who is most like me.

By the way - all of these politicians are loaded. What's loaded? People who make more money than me! ;) And they all meet that threshold ...........

As an aside - I always thought it was hysterical that Bush was the one most people wanted to have a beer with - considering he can't drink it.......

I missed the leap there. How did you get from point A to point B?

I agree about Bush, although he is far from being middle class, despite the gold ol' boy demeanor.

I dislike the way SP talks. I dislike her informality. However, I am interested in ideas. I think a POTUS is only as good as the cabinet he (or she) surrounds himself with. And I would much rather have somebody who is not smooth and polished vs. somebody who sounds just right but has ideas I disagree with.

There's no doubt that Biden would be the best drinking buddy of the 4. You could definitely have a good time with Joe. He's got that jovial personality. He's always having fun. He's just happy to be alive, you know? The others, not so much.

I don't know if I'm "Joe Six Pack" or not. I don't like beer, it's gross. I like wine and mixed drinks. I didn't finish college (no money) but I have a desk job. But even though it's a desk job, I still work hard. I have a mortgage. I don't like watching sports on tv but love going to games (espcially the Cubs. Go Cubs!) but I don't get to do that much because it's expensive. I'll likely someday be a socer mom (or whatever sport my furture kid(s) choose). I will never own a minivan though (isn't that part of the socer/hockey/den mother look?). Not that I have anything against minivans, I just don't like driving big vehicals. I've traveled overseas to places as far aways as China, but Disney World is my favorite vacation spot. I like bowling. I trained as a clasical singer in high school. I listen to both Sarah McLachlan and Metalica. Country is okay if I'm in the mood for it. I like arugala. I like fine dining restaurants but my favorite meal in the world is a chili cheese dog, cheese fries, and a chocolate shake form Portilo's. I love to read, but I'm a bad speller.

So what am I? Joe Six Pack or Elitist? Or does just voting Dem automaticly make you elitist no matter what your background and current lifestyle?

Can someone help a girl out, I think I'm having an identity crisis!

I feel like the term "Joe Sixpack" brings to mind a "Larry the Cable Guy" kind of character- a stereotype of blue-collar people.

I think that Obama is keeping it very straight in front of the cameras to downplay the "inexperienced" labels that are being attatched to him. When he spoke in our town, my sister was the one who introduced him and was backstage with him. She said he was really funny and silly. A side that more Americans should see! In fact, when he found out that she was a dance teacher, he talked about his girls being in dance and how he couldn't keep up with him, and then did a little ballerina turn with his hand on his head. He was constantly joking, and talked openly and kindly with every person he came into contact with there. Out of all of the candidates that came, he was by far the kindest and most down to earth according to my sister.

I'm not sure how to respond to that. Just because that's your stereotype of blue-collar workers doesn't mean you should project your views onto others. I know it's certainly not my view of blue-collar workers, and I doubt most of the country has that view of America's workers. But I could be wrong. :confused3

It is a stereotype and I, too, find it offensive.

although.....

DH and I talked about having a drinking game last night. Each time she said "maverick" we had to chug a beer.

each had to chug a beer?

If that's the case, last night, rather than Joe-Six-Pack, you each were probably closer to Joe-Twenty-Four-Pack

;)

Thank you for the story. It's always nice to know there are human beings lurking behind the candidate fascades.
