:headache::headache: I stay out of most of the political discussions, I simply cannot keep up but I just need to get this out of my system: I hate the phrase "Joe Six Pack"! If I never hear it again this season I would be happy. I hate to be patronized by a politician trying to make him or herself think we are alike by reaching out to Ol' Joe. I don't drink beer, I like wine. I am not a soccer or a hockey mom, I prefer ballet and gymnastics. I don't want to sit around watching a game or bowling with my President and don't care if that person has the same background that I do. If all I cared about was the lingo a candidate used or that he or she came from a small town and had no Washington political experience I could be President, Doggoneit!

I really want my President to let me know that my Country is safe under his watch, that my President understands the economy, that my President tells me the truth on positions and not what "I" want to hear. I want my President to be qualified to lead this country and don't care if that person has more income than I, has more homes than I, went to better schools than I did, can afford more than I can, and I sure don't care if their verbiage is not the same as mine. I cannot wait until November 5th!

I hear you. Jon Stewart summed it up for me a few months back when people were all bent out of shape because Obama was an "elitist."

"Doesn’t elite mean good? Is that not something we’re looking for in a president anymore? … The job you’re applying for — if you get it, and it goes well, they might carve your head into a mountain. If you don’t actually think you are better than us, then what the **** are you doing? … Not only do I want an elite president, I want someone who is embarrassingly superior to me. I want someone who speaks sixteen languages and sleeps two hours a night hanging upside down in a chamber they themselves designed."

I loved Jon Stewart's quote. If only more people would realize that! I am with you, OP!

Amen, OP!! When Bush ran 8 yrs ago, I thought it would be great to have someone in office who seemed to understand those of us in the middle class, not some ivory tower academic type. I'll not make that mistake ever again. I'll talk to my friends and neighbors if I want the opinion of someone who's middle class and understands. I want my president to be WAAYY the smartest person in the room. Even more importantly, he/she needs to be the wisest.

In common parlance, an elitist is someone who only thinks they're better than the rest of us, when the reality is they're not.

I remember hearing this and thinking, "YES!"

I don't want a President that seems like a fun person to drink with. I want someone smart and someone who can express him/herself eloquently. I have plenty of friends already. I don't want someone as President who is just like me because I KNOW I am not qualified for the job.

And I cringe when I hear the phrases Joe Sixpack, Hockey Mom, Soccer Mom. I'm an average middle class, middle aged American woman and I am none of those things.

And that's precisely why you don't get it.

Well, my husband is a "Joe Sixpack" and I'm a soccer mom and we will absolutely be voting for Obama/ Biden. Guess we don't get it either. We'll vote on the issues. We've been struggling these last 8 years and we will fare far better with Obama's plans then McCain's as will the majority of the country.

Why does being middle class mean you aren't smart? I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.

I want somebody who understands my life and the pains I feel. People like the Kennedys, who have lived lives of privilege, can't possibly know what it's like to struggle to pay bills.

Holy schmoley, you didn't just say that! So average Americans can't drink wine instead of beer and enjoy watching Ballet? We all have to be beer swilling football fans??

Is THIS what Palin thinks middle America is??????:

I am a soccer mom and hockey mom, so I guess I shouldn't complain about those two, but I think she's really exploiting that angle because, well, it's kinda all she has. And I think she did well, much better than I expected her to in the debate, but IMO Biden won the night. But the Joe Six-Pack comment? Ack! That is seriously condescending in my mind. I think of Joe Six-Pack as an uneducated, beer-swilling idiot sitting around watching Jerry Springer. I have NOTHING against those who drink beer, my husband and I do (him more than me, lol), but to put it like that, "Joe Six-Pack" seems really low-class and I cringed when I heard it.

And you actually think Sarah Palin does? McCain? Biden? Obama at least grew up that way, not that he is now. Bush didn't grow up privileged?

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

That's exactly who she sounded like last night when she kept dropping her g's and saying things like "git 'em".

I was speaking in generalties. Yes, I understand that Bush grew up privileged. I didn't like him either. Out of all the names you listed, I think SP is probably the closest to me in terms of her life experience.

She's Bush with ****s. Only not so bright.

Oh goodie! Another personal assessment by the "Great Corndog"!

Just wait until he denies making the statement like he did with me on another thread. I was feeling really insulted by his personal attack on me until I read what he said about the OP on this thread. I admit he was uglier to you.

ITA. Where were the elitist lovers when Bush Sr. couldn't even estimate the cost of a gallon of milk? I'd say elitism flourishes on both sides of the aisle & has been living high on the hog on Wall Street & the board rooms of corporate America for quite some time.

It's about time the folks who pay the majority of the bills Washington racks up, speak up loud & clear & quit worrying about labels the media wants to put out there -- Joe Six Pack, soccer moms, leftists, conservatives, religious right, whatever. Don't be swayed how to vote. Really think about what's best for your family, best for our country & vote according to the available candidate who points most in that direction.

And that's precisely why you don't get it.

Are you serious? I guess I was alluding to that the fact that I am insulted by the notion that because I am from a middle class background I must be swilling beer after I get home from my job driving a taxicab ...oh wait...that was Archie Bunker. That I scarf down dinner and take off to watch a game....no that was Ralph Kramden.....

I am offended that some politicians believe that if they play up to the caricature they have of me and voters like me, they will automatically have my vote. Nothing is further from the truth. I do like wine and I don't understand soccer, and I don't like hockey. I don't care if my President eats broccoli, eats at McDOnald's, knows the price of arugula or plays pool but I do know when someone applying for the job is trying to "mimic" their notion of who I am or what I like in order to snag my vote.
