Does anyone here have a job that is say 9 am - 3:30 pm around your kids school schedule where you don't have to utilize any babysitting/after school care?

Just trying to come up with some sort of idea of what is out there - been interviewing for FT jobs but it sort of defeats the point having to utilize before/after care. At this point i'm between contract assignments in my field and thought maybe i'd do something where I can still work but something hourly. DH is the breadwinner so my salary is just for extra's. Thanks.

I work as an accountant part time. I share a FT job with another lady who works part time. I work 20 hours a week from 8:30 to 12:30. It is perfect for me since I am able to drop and pick up my boys from school.

I hope you find what you are looking for.

Go to work for the school district.

The only things I can think of are either retail or child care. A DF of mine is a pre-school teacher, another drives a school bus and a third is a lunch lady temp.

They are hard to get those hours sometimes without being there a while. A p/t office job would be nice but any retail/dept. store, supermarket or maybe even a fast food place.

Are you interested in Baby sitting? Home care? Just a few thoughts. Good luck!

All of my jobs as an adult have had basically those hours.
Banks and schools. ;)

I worked in a bank, first one was open 8-3 so I had to be there 7:45-3:30, the next one I worked at was 9-3 which was much easier. Banks tend to have much longer hours now, though, so I don't know if it would work out.

Schools, I subbed in a special ed school for a while. Now I work part time in the office of my childrens' elementary school.

If you're between contracts, subbing for the school district would be perfect. They need subs for everything : teachers, custodians, food service, bus drivers, clerical workers, etc. You can pick and choose what you're qualified for and willing to do.

Just make sure you working is actually worth it. Make sure you factor in new clothing, extra car costs but more importantly, is it going to throw you into a higher tax bracket and end up costing you more. Just something to think about.

Like others have said, part-time office work and a job with the school district are the way to go. With a lot of companies cutting back on benefits, part-time work is actually fairly plentiful (at least around here).

I know a few moms who ended up working at the school cafeteria for those hours.

I work part-time at our local newspaper doing clerical work - 15 hours per week - I was able to have a lot of input into my schedule so I work Noon -3pm dailly. I live very close to work (3 miles) so going in daily is not a problem and it works out best to keep on top of emails, etc by going in daily.

I think part-time jobs are on the rise as fewer companies want to pay someone benefits, I bet you will be able to find something that works for you. Good luck.

I forgot about this - they are very, very hard to get into here. My sister does this Upstate, NY and my sister-in-law here at home. My sister I believe is a private company and was lucky to get in where my sister-in-law here works for the Board of Ed and it took her years of being on a waiting list.

I work in the school cafeteria at the high school here and love it. I've been here 3 years now. Unfortunately my last day is next Friday as I am moving.

We've been having a hard time getting help, even subs. I don't know why as it is an ideal job for those like the OP. The pay is awesome too. I;m really going to miss it.

Do they post it at the school? What about posting it at an elementary school? I am sure there has to be moms out there who would jump on this.

For that very reason I have started a personal chef business. It's a little slow go right now but I have had a few clinets.

I have a friend that does daycare only for teacher's kids. She has most of the same school days off (except for some teacher in service days and the couple weeks before and after school when the teachers are doing workshops, etc) and had most of her summer off. Obviously the teachers had to drop the kids off earlier then when school 'starts' and picked them up later but all the kids were gone by 4 every day. It worked our great for everyone because the teachers didn't want to have to pay daycare costs in the summer and over school breaks and my friend got the time off she wanted with her family.

I worked part-time, 9:30 to 1:30, at a local hospital for a few years. I did reception and registration in a department that handled employee and occupational health services.

Hospitals have need for extra clerical workers on weekday mornings as that's when most patients go in for scheduled services. Think about reception in departments like the laboratory and MRI/CAT Scans. I did have to work the same hours in summer and put DS in day camp, but the hospital where I worked offered a low-cost summer camp program in their employee day care. It was actually an awesome camp; they fed the kids very well and took them on a lot of nice trips--places like the sprinkler park, zoo, bowling, etc.

These days, the key to getting a job is networking. If you know anyone who works in a school or a hospital, talk to them about alerting you to any PT job openings.

Our cafeterias are the same way--hard to find people to work in them. When you go onto the school system website, those are about the only jobs you can get for starters. Our "lunch ladies" aren't contracted out--you are a school system employee. I actually know a few moms who started that way and ended up being able to move up into other, non-teaching positions in the school. It is hard work but the hours are great as well as the pay (for a part-time job). Much better than you'd ever get in retail.
