So I've applied for a job and I am terrified of telling my current boss that this other place might be calling for a reference. I feel that things will be extremely uncomfortable at work once this news gets out. I saw this opportunity and decided to take it but it's not like I'm halfway out the door. Any thoughts?

Well, I have never allowed a company to call my current employer for a reference until after I've accepted an offer and they are doing follow up calls.

Did you give them permission to contact your employer?

I agree with this. Why would you want your current employer to know you're looking elsewhere?

Hopefully they won't call until they decide to offer you a position. They always ask me and I ask them not to contact my current employer. It's safer.

I did allow them to contact my current employer because I've always felt that if I say no to that it looks like you've got something to hide. On the application under the box where they ask if they can contact your current employer it says if no please say why. I couldn't write something that sounded right. So I guess we'll see how it goes. I don't go into work until Tuesday so I have a couple days to figure something out.

I have never had a prospective employer call my current employer. I always allowed them to contact previous employers and they always seem to understand. When they ask why I am looking for a new job, I tell them the truth.

I've been working in the corp world for over 30 years and more than half of that was on the hiring end. NO COMPANY can fault you for not contacting a current employer, we understand that completely.

So I was talking to a friend who recommended that I not say anything and just wait and see if they contact my work and if my boss mentions it. Such a sticky situation.
