JM Barrie's birthplace 9 Brechin Road, Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland DD8 4BX. (run by the National Trust for Scotland)

On the way home from a recent trip to Aberdeenshire my family and l visited the small town of Kirriemuir, which apart from being well known for it's gingerbread is also the birthplace of JM Barrie who created Peter Pan. We visited the house where he was born in 1860 and saw the wash house which he used to play in and where he put plays on with his friends, later he said it was his first theatre and his inspiration for the little house the Lost Boys built in Never Land for Wendy.

There is an exhibition about JM Barrie and there is various items connected with his life. There is a dressing up room/small play area for children. In the garden there is a willow crocodile which children can run through. If you are in the area it is worth a visit.

Extract from information booklet JM Barrie's Birthplace
When JM Barrie was 6 years old his older brother David died, at the early age of 13. David had been the apple of his mother's eye. The close knit family was shattered by the death and his mother never really recovered. She was 'always delicate from that hour' wrote Barrie later. Barrie consciously tried to replace David for his mother, but concluded "I had not made her forget...when l became a man, he was still a boy of 13". One of the seeds of Peter Pan had been sown.

Sounds excellent ~ I work in Glasgow, go out in Edinburgh and apart from going to Uni in Dundee and Stirling I've seen very little of Scotland.

Great report ~ Thanx for sharing.

Did you think it was worth going to see :)

Yes, it was really interesting and the children enjoyed it too. We are in the National Trust so entry was free. We had spent the weekend in Aberdeen visiting Storybook Glen - a great day out, Crathes Castle and also visited Fraserburgh where my FIL comes from and visited a fisherwoman's cottage in Inverallochy (Maggie's Hoosie), which has family connections and is now a museum. Perhaps you have heard of it?

Storybook Glen:
Kids under 10 love it, but IMHO it looks tired and there isn't really much going on and it's not cheap for what it is. The cafe is poor too.

Crathes Castle:
A jewel in the NT's crown...possibly the best thought out and cared for NT property in Scotland.

Fraserburgh:
A day out??!!! You gotta be kidding! Cold, dirty, unappealing small town of crack addicts...Scotland at it's worst.

Just my tuppence.

It didn't cost us much over £10 in total for the 4 of us to get into Storybook Glen. We had been there a few years before but this time it looked as if a lot of the characters and little houses etc had been newly repainted. There was also some new additions. There is over 100 characters to see.. My 2 children loved it. There is also a new large gift shop. Have to agree with you about the cafe, the food could be much improved (healthier food offered), although it has a very good toddlers play area with lovely new Peter Rabbit & friends murals.

We were at Fraserburgh one evening to visit a fisherwoman's cottage nearby that is now a museum, which has family connections as does Fraserburgh itself.

We also visited the Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre at Arbuthnott, approx 11 miles from Stonehaven. Grassic Gibbon was the author of the book Sunset Song (part of the trilogy A Scot's Quair).
