Hi all!

My mom, sister and I are planning on trying Jiko for the first time in a few days-- we are so excited, but none of us are red meat eaters. What do you guys suggest ordering from the menu that is not red meat? I have read a lot of rave reviews about the filet w/mac & cheese, but that is just not an option for any of us. We do eat fish and chicken, though. Are there any other stand-out dishes that we must try?

Thanks! :)

There are lots of good dishes, and I think you're making a wise choice by not getting the steak with mac n cheese (it's an African-inspired restaurant, after all). :goodvibes

Thank you all so much for the suggestions!

And extra thanks to DonaldDoleWhip for those great pictures! All of the dishes look lovely. Did you have a strong preference for any of those three entrées in particular?

Any opinions on the salads/soups/apps?

Regarding those entrees, I think they're all good but it depends on your specific tastes.

The peri peri chicken has authentic South African flavors, and it's not too spicy (most of the peri peri chicken we've had in South Africa is spicer). The accompaniments are also very tasty - crushed potatoes, green beans, onion jus, and a sweet mango sambal. The maize-crusted fish (often halibut or corvina) is wonderful with the creamy tomato-butter sauce and veggies. The fish kushari (usually grouper) is more complicated than the maize-crusted fish, with lots of different components: cous cous, lentils, chickpeas, almonds, tomato, a creamy corn "pudding" underneath, crispy onions, and harissa vinaigrette. All the flavors worked together IMO. I'd be happy to have any of these dishes again.

There are also some great appetizers at Jiko, but they change seasonally so I don't want to suggest things that might be gone (the entrees also change, but I'm pretty confident that some of the ones I posted will be available). Jiko usually has some good flatbreads, and their cheese plate is also very good (it comes with 5 cheeses and some accompaniments). There are also some unique soups and salads - all the soups I've had at Jiko were excellent (corn soup with crab and avocado, butternut squash soup, etc), and the salads are also usually creative and quite good.

Here are some appetizers I've had and liked in the past:

Ahi tuna tataki spiced with mitmita (an Ethiopian spice), with heart of palm, avocado, and capers

Thank you again, DonaldDoleWhip! Everything looks wonderful.

I'm even more excited to try Jiko now!

I know it is red meat, but the beef bobootie roll was fabulous

We dined on appetizers, salads and soup this October and it was great. Have a wonderful time :goodvibes

The Grilled Shrimp Curry is the best dish I've had at any WDW restaurant .... Ever!!

Jiko offers both a vegetarian and vegan menu that is free from all red meat and its products. :thumbsup2

If they still have it, I've heard the Chakalaka is delicious.

I often get soup as my entree at Jiko because their soups have always been very good. They change seasonally and my favorites have been a chantarelle with pumpkin seeds and a tomato soup. They give you a large amount of soup so it works for me as a main course.

The cheese plate is okay, not great. Four of us shared one there last month and it looked exactly like the one in the photo shown above.

That tuna dish was delicious. I can never resist anything with capers. I was sorry it had to be shared.

Oh my goodness, LowesChevy! All of those appetizers look fantastic... even the beef rolls! I am thinking we might have to just order a bunch of different apps and a couple of entrees and split everything. Too many great options to choose from! :scratchin

Thank you all so much again for the suggestions!
