Anyone dine at Jiko this month? What's on the menu? I thought I read on one of these threads that there is a new Chef starting September but now I can't find anything about that through searching.

I was just there on the 10th and I took pictures of the menu sheet. Here they are:

(those are thumbnails, click for larger versions)

We had the Artisinal cheese selection as an appetizer and the entrees at our table were Peri Peri chicken, short rib, and filet mignon. Our daughter had the flat iron steak from the kids menu (which I unfortunately did not take a picture of) and she loved it. We universally agreed at our table that our meals were EXCELLENT.

FYI...i wasn't impressed with the service at Jiko (it was REALLY slow and the waiter kept making mistakes with our receipt and blaming us for his mistakes)...I hate it when waiters treat you poorly because you're not spending $$$ on alcohol, which definitely seemed like the case. To make matters worse disney enforces the 18% gratuity for a party of 6 so he knows he's getting that much no matter what...enough with my rant...

Anyway, My entree was the short rib which was absolutely awesome and I also got the african spiced fire roasted chicken flatbread. That flatbread was probably the best thing I ate the entire trip - and we ate well (10 day deluxe dining).

That menu looks very similar to the menu in August. The only differences I noticed are the tibbs appetizer and vegetarian entree being different. I wonder if bigger changes are coming (such as on the dessert menu).

You can always ask to have the tip reduced for poor service. That is no excuse for a waiter to be lazy.

We have had only wonderful friendly service from the wait staff every trip to Jiko. It is our favorite place (V&A excluded...we use it only for special occasions)

OH NO i don't see the kalamata olive and goat cheese flatbread on the menu:eek::confused::sad2::sad1::sad:

We took friends to Jiko for dinner in May and it was the first meal there I have not really enjoyed. I did not like what I ate and neither did DH. We asked for a wine we had at Victoria Falls lounge and our waiter told us they did not have it at the Jiko bar so my friend and I said fine and went and got two glasses ourselves. When we came back the waiter was all apologetic and said he was mistaken he was told he could have gone to get it for us (or sent someone to.) We knew this from dining there in the past, but did not make a big deal out of it. His breath was awful too every time he talked to us so it was kind of unappetizing. :scared1:

we too were mistreated and overlooked when my fiance only had one beer. we didn't get the complimentary bread--he immediately was done with me when i ordered an iced tea. the tables around us drinking wine had his full attention, extra bread, menu explanations, smiles. we were there for 3 HOURS because he wouldn't come back. i sat with my drink empty for over 30 minutes at a time, 27 minutes from the time we ordered dessert to the time it was placed on the table. i've seen several complaints about that particular server on other threads.... and i'm willing to bet yours was eduarto/eduardo (whatever). we will not be back to jiko because of him. if it was... i don't know how he still is employed.

Our Ratings of Jiko: (8/10/2011)
. . . food price value: C
. . . food quality: C
. . . food quantity per serving: C
. . . food prep speed: B
. . . food selection: B
. . . seating quantity: C
. . . seating comfort: B
. . . eatery atmosphere: B
. . . eatery convenience: C
. . . staff friendliness: B
. . . staff helpfulness: C
. . . character interaction: n/a

NOTE: Jiko was designed as African-style foods, but has
become too Americanized. Gone are the richly spiced foods.
Cost cutting has reduced the uniqueness of the menu items.
It is still well above average, but now it is far too expensive
for the menu items or the very spotty service. It should be
noted, however, that the wine cellar of African wines is quite
large and superior in offerings. But, there are better choices
for fine dining within WDW.

Menu has not changed significantly (read: other than seasonal veggies, etc., normal things at a restaurant) since the old chef left on the 9th. I'm going to try again this weekend to get a walkup (this past weekend, I was, rather strangely, unsuccessful), so hopefully, I'll be able to report any changes (or news) then :)

That chicken flatbread sounds amazing -- I think I will have to try it next month if it's still on the menu :thumbsup2

Sorry to hear some of you had bad service. I've never had bad service there and have dined alone many times ordering only a single glass of wine (and sometimes just a coke). I never felt like I was treated any differently. If any of you are going back soon, request Michelle as your server. She is fantastic! A table near me one time even applauded her at the end of their meal she was so good. It is worth waiting to sit in her section if that's an option.

I'm interested in seeing what other menu changes they may make. Still looking forward to dining at Jiko next month :goodvibes

We've dined there many times as well and I agree that it seems weird (???) that people think service suffers depending upon what you drink BUT we have had sketchy service at Jiko, on and off, since they've opened. Never terrible. Certainly nothing I personally would deduct tip for (although I haven't added to the 18% TIW std tip a couple of times), so I certainly see the service criticisms as valid.

We ordered a decently priced bottle of wine and still had crappy service. We did not have Eduardo....our servers name started with an "O". Haven't been back since.

Even worse, NO BBQ CHICKEN FLATBREAD!!!! :scared1::scared1::scared1:
This has ALWAYS been on the menu since we started eating at Jiko years ago. Who is this new chef and when will he be leaving?

You need to let Jiko management know about the service you had...believe me, they do not want their staff treating customers in that fashion.

we've always had excellent service at Jiko's, never really give it a thought but we always have wine with our meal...just didn't think that would make a difference.

I've had to delete the last post - please note that discussion of tipping is confined to the Tipping Information Sticky thread at the top of the forum. Please see the first post of that thread for the Restaurant Board tipping discussion guidelines.

I've been to Jiko twice, and both times served by Dawn. We're going again in October, and I'm going to try to get seated in her section again! Absolutely spot-on server.

The first time we ate there, my d was held up on DME; we had the latest ADR possible, but still I had to be seated before she got there. Dawn greeted me with a smile, and brought the bread and my drink order. D came in at about 9:35. Dawn greeted her with a smile as well. She served us with grace and treated us as if we were the first party she served all day rather than the last. There was no feeling that she wanted to us to rush so she could go home (as I've had happen at several non-Disney restaurants!). Attentive but not pushy. The next day, I spoke to Jiko's manager to tell him about what wonderful service we had gotten. I think he was surprised that I asked to speak to him and didn't complain!

I sure hope she's still working there!

We've been to Jiko many times too and Dawn is our favorite server :goodvibes

As of May 2011 she was still there and when we mentioned we would be returning in Oct she said to stop by and see her again!

She suggested wonderful wines, she brought us extra toffee from the Caramel, Cheesecake and Toffee dessert when we mentioned how much we liked it, she transferred by tea into a to go cup at the end of the night etc.

Ok, so I need to ask...it was Eduardo, wasn't it?? We had a similar experience in december...VERY slow, poor service, he was very overworked, and the restaurant was understaffed....And his breath:sad2:
He also treated us like he couldn't WAIT to get out out the door..
Back in 2009, we ate there in the wine room, and I believe Dawn was our server...
We are trying one more time next month. We will ask to be seated in Dawn's section.

I would not let one server deter you. We had the most horrific service ever serveral years ago at Tutto. When we went back the next year with a party of eleven, I said to the hostess, "Please do not sit us in Roberto's area. We refuse to have him anywhere near us."

When we return next year to The Wave, we plan on saying the same thing about Kim.
