JFK - New york city centre

Hi all,


Have any of you guys got experience in getting from JFK to the centre of Manhattan.

I'm not sure whether to go by bus (coach) or subway ( A line) or taxi.

Time the journey takes is important to us, but we're both students, so it can't cost the earth (that rules out the helicopter )


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Taxi is your best bet.

The Mayor of New York sets the cost of the fare from JFK to the city centre and this will be displayed on the taxi rank and inside the taxi (so you won't get ripped off!). Its about $50 plus tip.

The Taxi driver will probably not speak any english, so it may be handy to write down Hotel Pennsylvania just in case and pass it to him/her.

personally if youre looking at cost I would use the A line, cheaper than a taxi and a bit more direct than a bus.

Beware that A line platforms are numbered as well as lettered!!!, and it can be very confusing when you have to find the right train!!.

We had a car from JFK to central Manhattan and we met quite a few traffic jams, but if the taxi fare is set, then it's either that or Jules advice.

We also got in many cabs and everyone we were with spoke English.

On the way over there I would get a cab.......you've just been on a long flight and the first sight of a subway after that might confuse you.

At the end of the trip when money's tighter i'd get the subway - especially if you've got a metrocard as you will have already paid for the journey.

Taxi definately.

The subway is great and cheap and I use it all the time when I'm in Manhatttan, but lugging your suitcase on a train and up and down stairs when you change is not what you want to do after a long flight.

The fixed cost for a taxi from JFK is $35 plus tolls (normally $3) plus tip (15% or thereabouts). But this is only on the way out - the way back they charge the going rate which can be between $40-$50 depending on traffic and time.

If you can afford the taxi then go for it, dragging bags on trains isn't my idea of fun. We took a cab to JFK when we stayed at the Hotel Penn - it was an easy run (by NYC traffic standards anyhow )
