Jet Blue From Canada......It Looks Like It Will Happen !

I hope they do consider cities such as Calgary and Halifax as mentioned in the article.

Westjet flies out of Kitchener and it was so easy and convenient for my FIL, who lives there, to travel direct to us in the West.

Anyway, it would be great to have Jet Blue as an option with flights at competitive prices.

As a frequent Jet Blue flier from the US airports to Florida, this is awesome news! Thanks for sharing...

I would LOVE to see JetBlue offer flights from Ottawa to Orlando. Not that I don't adore flying WestJet - but it would be nice to have an alternative if my needed dates are not available...

Here's hoping it comes true :wizard:

Hopefully it will help drive down prices a bit but don't really count on it. With all the extra taxes and fees to fly out of Canada that will be difficult.

Please come to Fredericton!

JetBlue in Canada would be great. It would save a lot of people in Ontario the hassle of driving to Buffalo to catch discount flights on JetBlue or Southwest Airlines.

Obviously, my vote is for Kitchener, which would capture many from west GTA and Golden Horseshoe that want to avoid Toronto, as well as east torward London and north toward Owen Sound. An interlining agreement with Westjet would be interesting too, offering flights to Western Canada via Kitchener/Hamilton.

Like someone mentioned though the fares will never be as cheap as in the US due to all the taxes and fees. But it's a start.

In Southern Ontario we are pretty fortunate to have relatively easy access to large US airports. Within a five hour drive of Toronto there is Buffalo, Detroit, Cleveland & Pittsburgh.

Most of the country doesn't have many options as we do .

Is Jet Blue planning routes with in Canada or only flights to the US?

If Jet Blue comes to Canada the Greater Toronto area will probably be one of their first stops. Hamilton's Airport makes a lot of sense as it is well under capacity if they are looking only for trans boarder routes.

If Jet Blue does set up shop here will that cut into their business in Buffalo?

I will confirm that Jetblue executives were recently at Pearson but un-confirmed on their intentions:banana: . It was noted in a US paper that Jetblue did think that Pearson was too expensive but their target market would be Toronto. It probably wont happen for a few years but I do think they will begin in southern Ontario.:confused3

Jetblue can only fly transborder routes or pick up Canadians in Toronto and fly them internationally, they can't fly any routes within Canada due to cabotage rules.

Is there anyway you can provide a source? I would love to read that article as well.

Thanks

I would not drive 5 hours for a flight. Kinda defeats the purpose of flying... drive 5 hours to be there 2 hours early, leave an extra hour for the boarder.... My max is 2-3 if the savings warrants.

US Carriers can only fly one stop Canadian Itineraries at this point, until a TRUE open skies agreement is executed.

Hamilton would canabalize their BUF business, of which is estimated to be 1/4-1/3 Canadian PAX. Airport and Taxes at YYZ would not allow them to execute as a LCC as we have seen with WestJet and thier rising $$$, in many cases in the same price range as AC. London is getting a little far West to capture the GTA PAX, and their are not really any airports to the East until Kingston that would be in the position to accomodate JetBlue or convenience for the Golden Horseshoe population.

Again, I may be a bit biased, but to draw from a HUGE population base of the GTA, Golden Horseshoe and Southern Ontario, without overly canabalizing their OWN BUF traffic/business, Kitchener is looking pretty good. Another board made the suggestion of moving a few of the BUF flights (JFK, BOS and maybe MCO) to Southern Ontario and introduce a few new destination from BUF as an offset.

This is still a year+ away, but it will be interesting to see how it all plays out!

I agree that Kitchener is the ideal site. To put it any closer to Buffalo makes no sense, especially since there are plans in the works to expand the Buffalo airport soon. That IMO would leave Hamilton out of the picture.

I can't imagine a 20 minute drive to catch a plane. That would be heaven. :thumbsup2

Would JetBlue really care if locating at Hamilton would eat into its Buffalo volume if, in the long run, it meant overall growth to their business? I know that Southwest operates from San Jose, SFO and Oakland airports. If the volumes went down from Buffalo due to a decrease in Canadian passengers, I presume they would reduce merely routes and staffing there. Maybe I'm missing something?

If folks don't like driving and have the extra income, why not fly local.

Looked into flying out of Toronto, $2200 for the four of us.
We all flew out of Pittsburgh in '06 for $489 Canadian.
Yes, we spent a 5 hours driving, paid to park, we also shopped at Grove City, PA on the way back no sales tax on clothing.

This year we flew out of Detroit $511 Canadian. 4 hour Drive.

Lets do the math
If we had flown out of Pearson both times total $4400.
Total for flights out of the states $900.
Let's say additional expenses of $300 for gas, parking and pocket money. Total $1200 Canadian

$4400
-$1200
$3200

Saving of $3200 for 18 hours a of driving. That's $177.77 a hour of savings.

The above numbers don't include more savings of flying out of Pittsburgh Aug '05 or driving down to WDW Mar '06

Thanks to my DW brilliant trip planning abilities we've been to WDW 4 times in a little over 2 years and taken a Disney Cruise.

So.. we will continue to save money and visit Disney often.

If someone can hook us up out of Toronto for $700 when we want to fly let me know. We usually see what dates we have free, book accomodations, then get the flights.
I think some airline in Canada had $29 fares recently, can't remember who though.

I would guess that JetBlue are savvy enough to look into potential flying routes in great detail before committing to it. I too believe that Pearson would not be their first choice for all of the above mentioned reasons. That then leaves Kitchener ,London and Hamilton. To service the bulk of the MCO bound GTA customers ,Hamilton is the closest but I'm not sure if the difference in landing fees will have a huge difference on the overall cost of a typical flight (I flew into Hamilton once on Westjet and the price was only $10 cheaper than YYZ) .
While its true to say that JetBlue would be "cutting into their own action" in Buffalo...its also true that they would be dropping the competition they presently have from Buffalo (SWA,Air Tran etc) in favour of competing with AC and Westjet . I think they could do that quite nicely..:thumbsup2

Sunwing currently and frequently has great deals. I booked R/T end of November for $29 each way and with taxes came to $190 CDN. Not a bad deal at all especially when I get free parking at YYZ versus $8.75 a day at Buffalo. I prefer to fly out of YYZ but most of the time the prices are significantly cheaper than YYZ.
