February 28 - OHANA'S
We had 6:40pm adr's, this would be our first dinner at Ohana's as adults-and the first time ever for my ds. We arrived at 6:30, and were checked in by a hostess there that looked just like Paula Deen from the Food Network. She could easily be her sister, but a thinner version. She had that same cool looking salt n pepper hair Paula has, but more of a spiked out updated hairstyle. It was on that night, more so then I would have thought for a Tuesday night. But we still managed to get a seat right before the bar area, and only sat for maybe 10 minutes. Just enough time for us to look at the drink menu & decide that we were'nt going to get anything besides a soft drink. We were taken to our seat by our cousin somebody, cant remeber his name, and along the way shown all of the desserts, and meat choices. We had a great table, far enough away from the coconut races-but off the center enough to see the Castle without leaving our seats. The waiter was there very fast to take our drink orders, and then our cousin Mike came right behind him with the wings, wontons, and salad. He explained all the taste of the dipping sauces, and suggested what meats would be great with each. My ds, who is a royal crank with food (anything that isn't a chocolate chip granola bar, oatmeal, bacon, bread, spaghetti, watermelon, or grapes is poison) was the first to dive into the wontons. We all agreed that the wontons were great, and that the peanut sauce was the best of the 3 with these. We tried the salad and agreed that it had a good taste, but didn't want to waste good stomach space on salad with all of the meat we were in store for. So onto the wings, I needed nothing else after trying these. They were so good, sticky-but not soggy. How do they acheive that? The wings had a almost crispy outside, and not soft and wet from the sauce. Just perfect. My husband thought that the wings were good, but had a sweetness that he didn't expect. He's crazy anyway-so disregard his thought, these wings were the best thing out of the apps. We were onto the shrimp, and I know that some people have issues with the shrimp still having the shells on them. Not us, we are shrimp eaters-and the shell for us is just the perfect place for the flavor goodness to hang out and intensify. So with that being said, yes it was on. We all, even my cranky ds, ate all of the shrimp until they were gone. By this time there were 3 birthday anoouncements going on around us in a perfect semi circle. My ds was amused with the entertainment, the lady that was singing struck his fancy; alot. He keep his eye on her, and caught her attention. She blew him kisses everytime she came around our way, and he was so in love with her. So much so that all of his pearly whites were on display everytime he heard her coming. He loves her! Then without a second to breath, here comes the meat. There was beef, turkey, and pork. The beef was my least favorite meat. It was very undercooked, and slightly salty I thought.(I dont eat salt, at all, and maybe this would have been ok for a person that normally eats with salt-but for me so salty) The pork was good, tender and seasoned to perfection. No sauce necessary with this one. The turkey was my favorite, not at all dry like some have noted. Just perfect. This I had about 5 pieces of, and baby crank ds-2. My husband was partial to the beef and pork. Both he ate with the peanut sauce, and loved. He ate alot, I have no idea how much exactly-but lets just say that he got his money worth and then some. This is were our visit gets a bit long, there was no more drink refills for about 15-20 minutes. Mike was all over the place, MIA for like 15-20 minutes. Then he comes back with refills in tow, and dessert as well. I then tell him that we wanted the snowball bucket for the baby-and he grabs it and is back in a flash. We dive into the bread pudding, and some how find space in our bloated over-extended stomachs to eat it all! This was just so good, not too sweet-not too wet...some how better then what my southern grandparents have made for me for years. Absolutely the best dessert the whole trip! But while we are in a slight dessert coma, and our ds has made a complete and utter mess of the table and the floor, we notice that we didn't have our potatoes or our vegetables. The horror, what were we thinking about! My Irish-potato loving husband went into a slight shock when he saw the majesty that is the Ohana's potato. So right away he says "Tiff, we didn't get that..what happened?". This guy is a cop for goodness sake, it's not rocket science Columbo! We got shafted..Mike has slipped off! He has commited the ultimate sin as far as he was concerned. I calm him down and advise him that although we a sickly full, and 5 pounds heavier, (a piece), that I will request that we get them. So the drink guy comes along with the bill, and I give him the story and he is so sorry ,yadda yadda- Yeah thanks, can you get this guy his potatoes? (only kidding) But I did agree with him to bring some out, so he did-and we loved them. Great food, great atmosphere, a must do for us.
