Passed away today. He was such a funny man. I loved him on nearly every show he was on. He was such a class act. RIP

Jerry's best known for his role on "Coach" ... where he played Asst. Coach Luther Van Dam alongside Craig T. Nelson. He also had major roles on "Yes, Dear" and most recently, "The Middle."

He was 86.

Sad. Funny, as a 60 year old I'd say he was best know for My Mother the Car. Or for being.....and playing on the Dick Van Dyke show......Dick Van Dyke's brother. Never watched any of those other shows.

He was on the Judy Garland Show 1963-1964 but he was quickly dropped as he added nothing. Garland didn't need a second banana.

The Van Dykes grew up in my h8me town, Danville Illinois. About 30 years ago, Jerry moved his family back to Danville and bought a great house. He only lasted about a year though as there was and is little to do there. But Dick has returned a few times, the last time being last year when he came back for a fundraiser to preserve their childhood home.

Thought I just saw him on an old "The Middle" the other night. Didn't he play Frankie Heck's father?

Yes he did play Frankie’s dad. Dick was in it too, maybe just one episode, playing Jerry’s brother. I noticed recently only Frankie’s mother was in it and was wondering if Jerry was ailing.

Loved him on Coach. Was so happy to see him again on The Middle. Sad to hear of his passing and that a car accident 2 years prior had such an impact on him.

I liked him best in Coach. He made some guest appearances in Dick Van Dyke show too. He was pretty funny. May he Rest In Peace.

They only made 30 episodes of My Mother the Car. You do see reruns once in a blue moon. Supposedly a TV show has to have at least 100 episodes to be worth selling for reruns.
Hmm. Didn’t realize that.
