no i'm not talking about my oh so firm stomach ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ive just found a site that sells sports beans- and they're jelly belly ones! Does anyone use these and if so at what point in my run would i normally eat these? Any excuse for extra jelly belly's :lmao:
I'm now running over an hour so guess i need to e introducing more than just water? Am i right? Sorry for so many questions :surfweb:

and seriously, whoever handed me a pack of them during the full last Sunday, I meant it when I said I love you! Those beans were a godsend!!!

That said, I don't do Gu or sports beans or anything for shorter races/runs -- just powerade and water. I find that unless I really need that energy boost, I am better off without them, stomache-wise. But if you are thinking of using them, I would definitely suggest starting to get used to them early on.

Oh, I also have friends who swear by salt tablets. On their advice i used them during the full this time (1 tablet every hour or so) and they did seem to help me feel a bit more normal (whatever that may be).

I love sport beans (like the Orange flavor) and used them during the half. (I didn't use them during the 5K) I ate about 4 whenever there was a water stop, and drank some water with them. (I hear you're supposed to have water with them.) That's about how I trained with them. I felt great during the half, with no hydration issues.

Hi Smileyk8!

I've been using occasional sport beans for a while. Some people talk about it in terms of mileage. A fried said "I don't use anything but water for runs under 8 miles" or something like that. But the main thing is, in the time he can run 8 miles, I can run about 5. I think around an hour, it can start to feel like you're completely running out of zip. A few beans and some water is enough to pick things up again, for me anyhow. They say a pack for every hour of exertion, but you need to experiment to see what works for you.

I like that they don't have caffeine and that they are non-messy. I don't think I'd want to eat a whole pack at a time - that could be hard on the stomach, for sure. They are STRONG. I have also used just plain old Jelly Bellys, too, in a pinch. I guess they don't have the same % sodium and potassium, though.

I myself am a sport beans user. I've tried all of them, but Fruit Punch is my favorite and I can stomach the other one's. I only use them on runs over an hour and a half. If I'm running that long I usually take one package 45 minutes to an hour in and then take them every 45 minutes or roughly 4 miles after that. It's really a trial and error thing. Of course during the Marathon I only took two of them and then just had the sports drink they provided the rest of the time. Probably wasn't smart, but it worked. Good luck.

DH is a runner, and he wanted me to take something every mile after my first 3 miles...

I bought the red and blue and green beans - I liked the Red best (I got mine at Walmart and Target, as well as the running store!!)

When at the Disney Marathon Expo they had samples of knox blox jello type block goo - that is what I went with in the half, and I hope I can get them here!!!

I use them, too, starting at about 75-90 minutes in. I get mine--lime green--by the box, usually at Target (which is cheaper than Dick's Sporting Goods in our area). And I know it's an odd thing to note, but sports beans are okay for vegetarians.

Btw, Hi Erica! :wave2: We spent a little time together on the course last weekend--and I just wanted to let you know I really appreciated your sense of humor.

I used the orange in the full and they were a godsend. (I normally just use plain gummy bears but these have the extra good stuff in them so I decided to try them) note--I decided to taste all the flavors on one of my long runs which was a good thing beucase to me the green ones were inedible. the blue and red were OK and orange were the best.

Oh Please share the site, Lynn has been asking me to find a place after no joy in finding them at our local stores.

I also like them and put a pack in my mouth like a chipmunk, slowly disolving over time. Seemed like a good idea.

I love my jelly belly sport beans. Although, I carried the same package through the entire Goofy! I never needed them. I had a banana at mile 13 or so and then that amazing orange slice at mile 20. That was it.

I only drink powerade when I train. I usually only drink powerade at races too but I always carry jelly belly beans in case it turns out to be one of "those" days.

As for mileage, if you are having a bad day, it can happen at any mile. I used two packs of sports beans during the Peachtree Road Race (10k) because I just didn't have any "go." They worked too because at mile 3, they kicked in and I raced the final 3 miles feeling fantastic.

Just be sure that you have enough if you take them early. Once you start taking them, you should take more at regular intervals.

Also, do NOT take the entire package at once. If you manage to keep them all in your stomach, the heartburn is unbelievable. Yes, that is experience talking.:rolleyes1

Hi, Deb! It was great meeting up with you on the course! Thanks for getting up the nerve to start talking to me -- it really helped to have a buddy to keep my mind off my feet, and your encouragment truly helped me keep going (and at a decent pace, too). You must have kept booking along at a decent pace, because once I got out of the port-a-potty, I never saw you (or Matt and Cheryl and Cheryl's hat) again on the course. Or maybe I just really slowed down after that, with nothing but the Sharpie signs to keep me company on that long stretch and nothing to pace myself with!

So, how's the blister? Other than that one on the front tip of my toe, I came through pretty well (my muscles were another matter entirely, though).

Ready for your next race yet? Hope we meet up during some of those long miles again very soon!

Thank you for sharing this! I mentioned sport beans to my Jelly Belly-addicted DH who immediately perked up at the idea. Thanks so I can pass on your warning!

I think on Amazon and most other websites you can only get them by the case. I found single packets at my Target (in the diet drink/power bar isle near the pharmacy) and near the register at my local Dick's sporting goods. I wanted to go the single pack route before I bought a case of a flavor that I couldnt stomach. I did the same thing with the Cliff shot blocks (bought single packs of flavors before I could decide what ones I could keep down.

I took 4 beans at a time starting near mile 10 of the full. I get a headache when my fuel meter starts to get low. that hit right about mile 10 and 4 beans later my head was fine. I took a few more at ever 2 miles or so thereafter. definitely take them with water.

No, thank you for talking with me. I was thinking of quitting when I saw you & you got me through!

The blister(s!) were, well, impressive. I think I hit a record in terms of size & number. But I suppose they make me felt like part of the WISH team because so many people got them. I'm glad to hear your feet survived fairly well & hope your muscles are okay? I've forgotten enough of the pain to be tempted by the Goofy next year, but DH & I have made a deal to either to just the half or the marathon so that we can make it through the family holidays without, well, an "incident." (Long story.) I need to plan another race, though, and am tempted by the Minnie--we'll see what the family schedule allows. And you--I hope you're planning your next one as well and that we'll meet up on the course.

And to keep this thread almost on topic...you can buy the small 5-bag value pack at Target. I started buying them like that once I settled on a flavor and was figuring out how to fuel.

That said, a big YES to the take a FEW with water. Do not take, I repeat, do NOT take them with Powerade. Blech and potentially upsetting.

Hey, it sounds like i could start munching these little beasties. Thank you so much for all your replies and helpful comments. I can't believe how much cheaper they are in the US tho, that's quite upsetting. I will probably start drinking lucozade first tho as it seems i'm going a bit OTT :rotfl:
