What the heck? His children are not "model citizens". I almost feel sorry for them. Something doesn't seem right with the paths that they have taken.

From cnn.com::::

"AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The youngest son of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush was arrested early Friday and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest, law enforcement officials said.

John Ellis Bush, 21, was arrested by agents of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission at 2:30 a.m. on a corner of Austin's Sixth Street bar district, said commission spokesman Roger Wade.

The nephew of President Bush was released on $2,500 bond for the resisting arrest charge, and on a personal recognizance bond for the public intoxication charge, officials said.

Wade said he had no further details about the charges.

Gov. Bush and his wife, Columba, appeared Friday evening at a museum reception in Miami.

"My son's doing fine. It's a private matter. We will support him. We're sad for him. But I'm not going to discuss it on the public square with 30 cameras," the governor told reporters.

It's not the first time Florida's first family has experienced legal problems with one of their children.

Noelle Bush, the governor's daughter, was arrested in January 2002 and accused of trying to pass a fraudulent prescription at a pharmacy to obtain the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. She completed a drug rehabilitation program in August 2003 and a judge dismissed the drug charges against her."

His oldest son seems to be a model citizen, though. He must get so mad when his siblings do these things! My first thought when I read that article was that Jeb's son didn't seem the type to get arrested...I didn't know that he had TWO sons.

These aren't good things. But alot of kids have some embarrassing scrapes on the road to adulthood. Not something to be proud of but not something that necessarily means you are a bad parent. Private family business.

They sure do have some serious alcohol problems that run throughout the entire family....

ITA with Tigeroo on this. However most of 'our' kids aren't going to have their embarrassing scrapes reported on CNN. And while these certainly are not things you would hope for your kids.....

My four sisters and I have never had scrapes with the law, and our dad and many of his relatives were alcoholics. If you keep making excuses for kids, they'll never face the consequences and get the help they need.

It is not how much you drink, it is where the drink takes you......

It shows me that drugs and alcohol addiction are everywhere... it does not matter who you are or what family you come from. I thought I heard he was belligerent during arrest as well, hopefully he will get some help if he needs it...I did feel somewhat annoyed when the announcer on my local news reported the extra bit about the daughter as well. It is past history as far as I am concerned and does not need to reported with this new case, but the media loves this stuff.

Absolutely! Lot's of kids run into scrapes with the law, and it's not blasted all over the media. Personally I can't stand "W", but the jury's still out on Jeb. Not making excuses for his kid, but lot's of kids his age have done stupid things. It happens, move on.

BTW--that story doesn't say so, but it's been all over the news here, his BAC was .01. So he wasn't blasted drunk, and he wasn't driving. In all honesty, my guess is that if he had been Joe Average College Kid, he would have been sent on his way.

I didn't know that. What is that, one drink? Big deal. But really, why resist arrest?

I think the daughter had more than just a "scrape" with the law, though. I think her problems run deeper than that.

Alcoholism/drug addiction has strong genetic ties, in my opinion. The "kids" need help.

I think it's just a sad situation. I hope his son learns from this. And like someone said, a lot of people make dumb decisions when they are young. It doesn't necessarily mean they are an aloholic or have a bunch of problems.

My dad used to smoke and drink and was a real loser, but then he turned his life around. My mom was always a great kid, good grades, etc., but she also smoked and even got picked up for drinking once. As the officer said she was, "all corned up," :rotfl:. Neither of them drink now, or smoke, or gamble (and we're not even Baptist!) so people can change.

A lot of people make poor decisions when they are kids, you just have to hope that they learn from them.

Well, I am sure it is distressing for his parents. Most parents feel a strong mix of emotions when their kids screw up, including embarassment, sadness, dismay, and perhaps even guilt.

I hope they delve deeper and make sure he doesn't have a substance abuse problem, and if he does, they get him help.

Well, here in FL, two beers in one hour is legally drunk if I'm not mistaken. Of course everyone's body chemistry and propensity for handling alcohol is a bit different. As to why he "resisted", I think we're only getting one side of that. Could it be that the cops saw him as a "high profile" bust and maybe aggravated the situation?

As an FYI, my son was in a bit of a scrape last year. The cops that first responded to the situation were young and just made it worse. A sergeant showed up and saw what was going on for what it really was, and took control, and the situation difussed without further incident. In the end no one was charged, although we did have to go pick up DS at the Police Station, only because he begged the sergeant to tell us what had "really" happened. The sergeant fully offered that the situation was totally blown out of proprotion by the responding officers, and he had apologized to my son for it.

It's quite possible that's the type of thing that happened to this kid, but unfortunately no wise sergaent was able to intervene. It's also possible that he tried to pull the "Do you know who my dad is" card, in which case I'm sure he's learning a lesson.

If he wasn't Jeb's kid and the President's nephew this would never have been an issue. Kids make mistakes whether they are born to you and I or the people who are in the news. I don't see why the media even reported it except to embarass the Bush family.

I found this list on the internet and thought it was funny and apropos:

I agree and I felt the same way when Al Gore's son was arrested for the same thing. Not everyone makes it to adulthood unscathed. All parents do their best and then hope for the best.

Dittos, really too bad for these kids they're in the spotlight when they stumble.

I didn't read this whole post, but my question is, he's at a good age, if his family is so supportive of the war...why isn't he in Iraq??

exactly - he wasn't driving, and honestly, it wasn't anything I or most of my friends didn't do in college... Kind of normal college behaviour imo.

I'm so proud of the people who have brought "decency" back to the White House. ;)

Sorry, when you are a public official or their family, it goes with the territory. Republican or Democrat. Media scrutiny, wether you agree or disagree, goes with the job and they all know it.
