Jeanne Update from Orlando
Its 9:44 PM and the wind is howling outside. My windows are making funny noises. It sounds like I am inside the Haunted Mansion. Everything is rattling. Curfew is in effect effecitve 11 PM.

My husband had to go to work at Orlando International Airport (left at 8:30PM) tonight and called me and told me that there were a lot of trees down. Lights are already going out.

I am sitting here at my computer because I am basically scared to smithereens. I don't know how to turn on the generator. My husband showed my 11 yr. old how to do it and hopefully he will and won't blow up the house.

Right now they have tornado warnings and they are saying that it will head straight to Orlando. Right now winds from the outer bands are at 100 mph.

No matter what, we have to tough it out. A lot of the companies here fired a lot of workers for not reporting to work as they stayed home to secure their residences and get their families ready. Florida Hospital fired about 11 nurses. Some Police Departments fired some of their police officers.

The weatherman ( who was been on the money so far with all the other hurricanes) said that we will have a major hit by 3 to 4AM with winds gust over 140 mph with 90 mph in Kissimmee. She is making landfall right now. So lets brace and I will let you know how I make out.

I am a little concerned because we had some water during the last one and the builder was supposed to come out an check it out and fix it, but nothing so far.

Hopefully, we will be okay. I know we are going to lose power, but for how long I don't know. As soon as I get back on I will post what happens.

Take care and good night to everyone. Your prayers are needed now.

Sending some pixie dust and prayers to you and your family! I know how you feel. We are holed up in POFQ waiting for the hit. Today is my birthday and all my plans were ruined due to Jeanne. I hope everything turns out ok for you.

Oh my gosh!!!! I feel sooooo bad for ALL of you down there!!!!
My prayers are with you!!!
How awful for those people to be fired from their jobs. That is sooo sad.:(

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really pray and hope you make it through this safely. I really am so sorry for everything you have been having to go through. Stay safe!!!

My prayers to you, your family, and all that are in the line of the storm. Please keep safe and check-in when you can!

Kim

People getting fired...thats just wrong. My prayers are with you and everyone who might be affected. Stay safe ane hopefully it will be over soon.

Again you people of Florida are in my prayers. I truly hope all of this ends for you soon. Hang in there and God Bless Pigsty333.

Pigsty, don't know if you have electricity but I am hoping you and your son are okay and your house is holding up. You see by our posts that you re not alone and there are many more just reading and wishing you well. I am stunned to hear that nurses and firemen have been fired. We need to do something about that, these people work so hard they must have had to check on family during the hurricanes.

My thoughts and prayers are with all CM and everyone down there in Florida.

Stay strong, you will get through this. I am sorry that your state is being hit again. Many prayers coming and please let us know how you are doing. We care and are worried about you.

Like everyone else, I want to add my prayers for you and your son. Also, for your husband and all Floridians in the path of Jeanne. I spoke with a very kind CM tonight around 8 PM and she said they would be shutting down soon and would be closed Sunday. All CM's still answering the phones were there voluntarily like her. She said she secured her home earlier today and they let people go home that needed to get ready for the storm. Hang tight and know that you are not alone. The whole dern DIS community is out here thinking of you! :grouphug:

I am praying for you and for my brother right now, he is at the Inn on the Lake in Sebring, FL and I believe that isn't too far from where Jeanne is making landfall right now. He was supposed to come home tomorrow, but it looks like that won't be happening. He tried to leave this morning but could not get a flight out. I pray for him and all of you in FL. God with you all!

Thinking of you and all the people in Florida and praying that everyone will get through this. Take Care.

Yes it is sad that anyone would be fired for trying to protect his or her family and house. That said, I must also offer another prospective. What if all of the emergency workers, nurses, and other folks we rely on decided that boarding their houses up was more important then protecting and serving? Sure, if their family was in dire danger and they had no other way to get them out of the state or no other family to help, I could understand them not showing up for work. However, if even half the emergency workers decided to do something like that, wow what an impact it would have on the people that depend on them to do their job.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,
Lee

Pigsty, my thoughts are with you. And thanks for all your help on what is going on with MCO, because of your post about the airport on Monday I called and found out my new flight had been cancelled! Was able to get out Monday night.

Lights have been flickering, but for the most part they have remained on, luckily for us.

The winds are still about 75-85 mph. The howling is now annoying and I am sitting here watching the fences swaying in the wind. Hopefully, we will be able to assess whatever damages have occurred.

Hubby is still at work and called me to tell me that he won't be coming home until sometime tomorrow. He related that Orlando International Airport was flooded, heavy damage. The American Airlines Terminal Side roof had collapsed. He will let me know as soon as they tell them when the airport will reopen.

If my power stays, I will keep you updated.

Just wanted to add that we are still praying for your family and all effected by another hurricane.

I have heard from a couple of Floridian friends and they are okay, but have not heard from another and am praying she and her little dog are okay.

Hang in there and know we'll be checking on your via this board.

God Bless you!!

Christine

I would like to add my 2 cents as well here, sorry to say but I have to disagree with you. How could you say coming to serve you is more important than boarding up their own home and protecting their own family? I don't want to sound insensitive here, but you do? If your spouse faced the choice of going off to work in an airport, police dept/fire dept or staying home to board up your house that was in the path of deadly storm & be with his family members, what would you want? I can see it both ways here. My husband works nights for a newspaper, it baffles me why he must be there to print a paper that may not be able to get delivered?? There should be a skelaton crew, maybe workers consisting of ones that are single, no children, or ones that have family members to help at home. Or maybe offer some time off prior to the storm to board up & allow family members to come into work with them..... the way this post sounds, it sounds like a person is suppose to give up protecting his/her family to protect you??? I may be reading this wrong so forgive me if I am. The workers that were fired here in FL at the hospital were told that they could not bring their family members to work with them. That is wrong! If someone said that to me, I would have been fired also. My family comes first. The local hospitals by me allow family members to go into work during a hurricane. Maybe you are not aware of what a hurricane is? During the storm, you actually shouldn't be as busy as after the storm. Same goes for the fire/police dept as well. People are told to stay off the roads, or to evacuate. They are told that if they don't evacuate, they will not have emergency services extented to them. Why should our fire/police put their lives on the line when a person is doing something they were told not to do? I don't think you understand the full force of what happens when your town is getting hit by a hurricane.
