JCPenney Purchase with Reward Question

I have two $10 JCP Reward certificates on my account, and I wanted to order a few items but need to order two different sizes as I'm not sure which size will fit. What happens to my rewards if I return some of the items?

For instance, if I purchase 4 pair of jeans at $20 each and my total is $80 ($60 out of pocket after using my $20 in Rewards) but return 2 pair of jeans, how much money would I get back? Are Rewards dollars equally distributed amongst each item, or are they treated like a method of payment? Do they disappear if I need to return items purchased with the Rewards? Do I end up paying full price for 2 pair of jeans if I return the other 2?

Edited to add: These are just reward certificates from their free program, not from having their credit card if that matters.

They will split it up among the items. If you buy 4 pairs with $20, it will take $5 off each, giving you $15 back on each pair returned. I try not to use them for something I might return for that reason, but sometimes I use it and just lose some of the value when I return.

If you return things, part of the reward disappears, even if the rest of the items still meet the qualifying amount.

That bothers me.

You can apply whatever you return to a new purchase. Say you buy two items at $40 and use two rewards so $10 is taken off each item. Returning one item would have you lose $10 in rewards however if you purchase something else, they can apply the returned reward value to a new purchase. If anyone hassles you ask for a manager.

Thank you for the tip on applying the rewards to a new purchase if I do so at the same time as my return.

I'll have to think if there's an item(s) I need to purchase that I know I won't need to return...our JCP stores are so understocked it seems so it's difficult to find things in the store.
