We're considering switching our string trio to a jazz trio since the songs we keep coming up with wouldn't sound right without a woodwind/brass (all 1930s tunes). Has anyone used them before? It'd be for the ceremony and pre-reception (SBP and Ariels). Evan wants a bass, and I'm thinking clarinet or sax (someone who could do both would be even better), but have no clue what third instrument to use. Any ideas?

For 1930s tunes, I would suggest a guitarist/banjo player as your third piece, but I'm thinking of the Django Reinhardt sound, or the soundtrack to "Sweet & Lowdown"...

Tiggerificheidi had the jazz trio at her reception, but they were more ragtime-oriented, so the guitar player played banjo, and they had a clarinetist/sax player plus a tuba. There's a pic and info in this post:

Yep, our trio was awesome! And the clarinetist did switch to a sax occasionally. A lot of the songs were some big band tunes and such, so I'm sure the feel of the music would be similar. We asked for "ragtime" but they played what they knew in a ragtime style. We didn't pick a first song, and they chose "Pennies from Heaven" which was released in 1936.

You can hear it in our video. Skip the first minute or so till we start our dance. Then, right after (3:40) is a good example of their more upbeat stuff.

Thank you! I had been searching for your video a few weeks ago, but to no avail. I was a bit worried about things being too brassy or loud, especially inside, but that didn't seem to be an issue at all. After going back through my music again I keep finding a second woodwind or even a violin (and piano of course, but that doesn't help much). Honestly, as long as they can play "The Way You Look Tonight" I think I'll be happy! (too many Astaire & Rogers movies for me)
